Neutralino Dark Matter

Abstract: We examine the main properties of relic neutralinos in the context of the Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model. We present a whole set of results obtained for the relic abundance and for detection rates with a model constrained according to the latest accelerator data. Predicted detection rates for relic neutralinos are compared to the present experimental bounds. A comparison with results obtained with more sophisticated theoretical schemes with unification assumptions at M_{GUT} is presented too. We also briefly discuss some properties of a Higgsino-like neutralino which has recently been suggested in connection with a supersymmetric interpretation of a single event at the Fermilab Tevatron.

Abstract: Forma de estudo: Clínico prospectivo. Objetivo: O estudo analisa prospectivamente os resultados da Reabilita o Vestibular pelo método de Cawtorne & Cooksey em 22 crian as, portadoras de vestibulopatia periférica, associada ou n o a sintomas centrais, com idade média de 8,6 anos. Material e método: Os exames quantitativos da fun o vestibular utilizados para quantificar a vestibulopatia foram a eletronistagmografia e a prova rotatória pendular decrescente (PRPD), mas a história clínica altamente sugestiva de processo vestibular foi considerada diagnóstica mesmo na presen a de exames normais. Resultado: Os resultados apontam a Reabilita o Vestibular como uma op o válida no tratamento das vestibulopatias na infancia, uma vez que n o houve casos n o responsivos ao tratamento.
Does Solar Physics Provide Constraints to Weakly Interacting Massive Particles?

Abstract: We investigate whether present data on helioseismology and solar neutrino fluxes may constrain WIMP--matter interactions in the range of WIMP parameters under current exploration in WIMP searches. We find that, for a WIMP mass of 30 GeV, once the effect of the presence of WIMPs in the Sun's interior is maximized, the squared isothermal sound speed is modified, with respect to the standard solar model, by at most 0.4% at the Sun's center. The maximal effect on the Boron-8 solar neutrino flux is a reduction of 4.5%. Larger masses lead to smaller effects. These results imply that present sensitivities in the measurements of solar properties, though greatly improved in recent years, do not provide information or constraints on WIMP properties of relevance for dark matter. Furthermore, we show that, when current bounds from direct WIMP searches are taken into account, the effect induced by WIMPs with dominant coherent interactions are drastically reduced as compared to the values quoted above. The case of neutralinos in the minimal supersymmetric standard model is also discussed.

Abstract: the trend of the current research in orthopedics prosthesis is based on the development of titanium alloys composed of non-toxic elements with low modulus of elasticity. the special interest in the ti-35nb-7zr-5ta alloy use for biomaterial applications is due to the lower modulus of elasticity, good mechanical strength resistance and superior biocompatibility. the process of titanium alloys production by powder metallurgy (m/p) from the elemental powders is a feasible route, for allowing the manufacture of parts with complex geometry and near to the final dimensions. samples of ti35nb-7zr-5ta alloy were sintered at 1500°c/2h, heat treated at 1100 o c in vacuum (10 - 7 torr) for 3 hours, followed by air and furnace cooling. the biological evaluation was carried out by a cytotoxicity test using chinese hamster ovary (cho) cultured cells in contact with diluted extract of three different sterile biomaterials: pead (negative control), cp-ti, the alloy tnzt and phenol 0.2% (positive control). the extract preparation of the material involved in this investigation and the employed cell line were based on the international standards organization iso 10993-5 (1992) guidelines. the results of the thermal treatments cycles of the tnzt alloy are coherent with literature and indicate a microstructural standard based on the presence of large beta grains with fine alpha precipitation in the grain boundaries and the interior of the grains. "in vitro" test indicated the non cytotoxicity of the ti-35nb-7zr-5ta alloy, demonstrating that the route and materials used is very secure for surgical implants production.

Abstract: study design: clinical prospective. aim: the authors analyze prospectively 22 children (mean age 8,6 years) with vestibulopathy treated with vestibular rehabilitation in order to verify its results. material and methody: twenty two children with peripheral vestibular disorders associated or not to central symptoms were submitted to vestibular stimulation by the method of cawthorne & cooksey. the methods used to quantify the vestibular abnormalities were the electronystagmography and rotational chair testing, but a suggestive history of vestibular disorder was accepted even the exams were normal. results: all the patients improved and our results suggest that vr is a therapeutic alternative for the treatment of vestibular disorders in the children.

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to investigate the efficiency of the 20 european football teams that most invested in players at season 2008-2009, considering the invested value and their results in championships. As analysis tool, was used the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), that had the purpose to compare the calculated efficiencies, identify goals to be reached by each team and the strategies used by possible benchmark opponents. For that, it was proposed two models. The first compared the teams’ performances by the point of view of the reached results in their national championships. However, in the second model, it was investigated the performance of these teams competing into the same championship, taking into account the teams in the previous model that had been classified for the Champions League 2008-2009.
Neuropsychological rehabilitation of memory deficits and activities of daily living in patients with Alzheimer's disease: a pilot study

Abstract: Patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) gradually lose their cognitive competence, particularly memory, and the ability to perform daily life tasks. Neuropsychological rehabilitation is used to improve cognitive functions by facilitating memory performance through the use of external aids and internal strategies. The effect of neuropsychological rehabilitation through memory training - motor movements, verbal association, and categorization - and activities of daily living (ADL) training was tested in a sample of 5 elderly out-patients (mean age: 77.4 ± 2.88 years), with mild AD (Mini-Mental State Examination score: 22.20 ± 2.17) and their caregivers. All patients had been taking rivastigmine (6-12 mg/day) for at least 3 months before being assigned to the rehabilitation sessions, and they continued to take the medication during the whole program. Just before and after the 14-week neuropsychological rehabilitation program all patients were assessed by interviewers that did not participate in the cognitive training, using the Mini-Mental State Examination, Montgomery-Alsberg Depression Rating Scale, Hamilton Anxiety Scale, Interview to Determine Deterioration in Functioning in Dementia, Functional Test, Memory Questionnaire of Daily Living for patient and caregiver, Quality of Life Questionnaire for patient and caregiver, and a neuropsychological battery. The results showed a statistically significant improvement in ADL measured by Functional Test (P = 0.04), and only a small improvement in memory and psychiatric symptoms. Our results support the view that weekly stimulation of memory and training of ADL is believed to be of great value in AD treatment, not only delaying the progress of the disease, but also improving some cognitive functions and ADL, even though AD is a progressively degenerative disease.
Linear gyrokinetic particle-in-cell simulations of Alfven instabilities in tokamaks

Abstract: The linear dynamics of Alfven modes in tokamaks is investigated here by means of the global gyrokinetic particle-in-cell code NEMORB. The model equations are shown and the local shear Alfven wave dispersion relation is derived, recovering the continuous spectrum in the incompressible ideal MHD limit. A verification and benchmark analysis is performed for continuum modes in a cylinder and for toroidicity-induced Alfven Eigenmodes. Modes in a reversed-shear equilibrium are also investigated, and the dependence of the spatial structure in the poloidal plane on the equilibrium parameters is described. In particular, a phase-shift in the poloidal angle is found to be present for modes whose frequency touches the continuum, whereas a radial symmetry is found to be characteristic of modes in the continuum gap.
Dark Matter and its Particle Candidates

Abstract: In these lectures we first briefly review the main observational facts which imply that most part of matter in the Universe is not visible and some recent intriguing experimental data which would point to a significant contribution to Omega due to a cosmological constant. We subsequently discuss some particle candidates for dark matter, with particular emphasis for the neutralino. We present the main properties of this particle, also in the light of the most recent experimental results in direct search for relic particles; furthermore, we discuss the perspectives for their indirect searches.
Design of a Centrifugal Compressor for Micro Gas Turbine: Investigation of Scaling and Tip Clearance Effects  [PDF]

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to investigate the design in similarity of a centrifugal compressor for micro gas turbine and the related scaling effects on performance using CFD investigations. This work is part of a research project carried out by the Department DIME of the University of Genova, with the purpose of investigating the performance of a micro gas turbine in the change from 100 kW electrical output to 250 kW, while maintaining the compressor pressure ratio and geometry in similarity. The first part of the work focuses on the comparison between the original and the scaled machine, while the second part of the study deeply investigates the tip gap effect in the new configuration. The aim is to provide information about the performance of the compressor designed in geometrical similarity and to evaluate the tip gap height impact. From the efficiency point of view, the scaled-up machine has higher efficiency (up to 1.4% increment in design conditions) keeping the same technological limit for impeller manufacturing. However, the variation of tip gap height in the range 0 ÷ 1 mm strongly affects this parameter, leading to 10% alteration in design conditions between the ideal and worst case. The results, both in terms of overall performance and flow fields, are widely discussed in order to obtain simple yet reliable correlation for preliminary design.
