Bioethics and the Law in Familial Cancer, a Practical Approach  [PDF]
Azua-Romeo Javier
Open Journal of Pathology (OJPathology) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/ojpathology.2012.22009
Abstract: Hereditary cancers are the result of germline mutations in specific genes that increase susceptibility to cancer. This susceptibility is spread among family members according to different patterns of inheritance. Inherited susceptibility to cancer, does not imply the certainty of developing it in all cases. In this sense many questions have come out in recent years, not only in the medical sense but also in the field of bioethics and the law.
Extreme environments as potential drivers of convergent evolution by exaptation: the Atacama Desert Coastal Range case
Armando Azua-Bustos
Frontiers in Microbiology , 2012, DOI: 10.3389/fmicb.2012.00426
Abstract: We have recently discovered a variety of unrelated phototrophic microorganisms (two microalgae and one cyanobacteria) in specialized terrestrial habitats at The Coastal Range of the Atacama Desert. Interestingly, morphological and molecular evidence suggest that these three species are all recent colonists that came from aquatic habitats. The first case is Cyanidiales inhabiting coastal caves. Cyanidiales are microalgae that are commonly found in warm acid springs, but have also been recently discovered as cave flora in Italy. The case is Dunaliella biofilms colonizing spider webs in coastal caves; Dunaliella are microalgae typically found in hypersaline habitats. The third case is Chroococcidiopsis, a genus of Cyanobacteria commonly found in deserts around the world that has also been described in warm springs. Thus, we show that the traits found in the closest ancestors of the aforementioned species (which inhabited other unrelated extreme environments) seem to be now useful for the described species in their current subaerial habitats and may likely correspond to cases of exaptations. Altogether, the Coastal Range of the Atacama Desert may be considered as a place where key steps on the colonization of land by phototrophic organisms seem to be being repeated by convergent evolution of extant microalgae and Cyanobacteria.
Sequestration and Carbon Storage Potential of Tropical Forest Reserve and Tree Species Located within Benue State of Nigeria  [PDF]
Ishaq S. Eneji, Ofoegbu Obinna, Emmanuel T. Azua
Journal of Geoscience and Environment Protection (GEP) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/gep.2014.22022
Abstract: Carbon sequestration potential of tree species within forest reserves and other sites in Makurdi Benue state of Nigeria was investigated using non-destructive Walkley-Black technique. The result indicates that P. americana has the highest CO2 sequestration potential (125,916.7 kg), while T. grandis (10.4 kg) and D. regia (26.1 kg) were the least. The study also shows that trees (T. grandis, S. actinophylla and P. americana) with thick vegetation, broad and clustered leaves were found to be better CO2 sequesters. The relationship between the tree height and amount of CO2 sequestered gave a regression equation of y = 67898x + 9509 with R2 = 0.266, indicating insignificant variations existing between tree height and CO2 sequestration at P > 0.05. Variations however existed between tree dominance and CO2 sequestration among trees investigated. This finding strategically positions Benue tropical forest in line for carbon credit financing while substantiating the importance of preserving our indigenous forest and tree species.
Dynamic and Configurational Approach to the Glass Transition by Nanoscale Cooperativity  [PDF]
G. Romeo
Open Journal of Biophysics (OJBIPHY) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/ojbiphy.2012.23012
Abstract: Here we examine the findings obtained for disaccharide/water mixtures near glass transition that involves cooperative relaxation features on kinetic by viscosity and on thermodynamic behaviour by neutron scattering. Then to address cooperative phenomena that mitigate the Debye-Waller behaviour we invoke Adam-Gibbs’ idea of a cooperative rearranging region. Neutron results suggest that the excess mean square displacement behaves as free volume and is closely connected to an elementary step of the structural relaxation. Then viscosity data evidence a breakdown of the Einstein-Debye relation, decoupling attributed to the intermolecular cooperativity.

A simple model of energy expenditure in human locomotion
Romeo, F;
Revista Brasileira de Ensino de Física , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1806-11172009000400008
Abstract: a simple harmonic oscillator model is proposed to describe the mechanical power involved in human locomotion. in this framework, by taking into account the anthropometric parameters of a standard individual, we are able to calculate the speed-power curves in human walking. the proposed model accounts for the well known margaria's law in which the cost of human running (independent from the speed) is fixed to 1 kcal/(kg km). the model includes the effects of a gentle slope (either positive or negative) and the effect due to the mechanical response of the walking surface. the model results obtained in the presence of a slope are in qualitative agreement with the experimental data obtained by a. leonardi et al.
