Influences of Solar Cycles on Earthquakes  [PDF]

Natural Science (NS) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/ns.2011.36060
Abstract: This paper inspects possible influence of solar cycles on earthquakes through of statistical analyses. We also discussed the mechanism that would drive the occurrence of increasing of earthquakes during solar maxima. The study was based on worldwide earthquakes events during approximately four hundred years (1600-2010).The increase of earthquakes events followed the Maxima of Solar cycle, and also depends on the tectonic plate location. From 1600 until 1645 events increased during the Maxima in some of the tectonic plates as Pacific, Arabian and South America. The earthquakes analyzed during two grand solar minima, the Maunder (1645-1720) and the Dalton (1790-1820) showed a decrease in the number of earth-quakes and the solar activity. It was observed during these minima a significant number of events at specific geological features. After the last minima (Dalton) the earthquakes pattern increased with solar maxima. The calculations showed that events increasing during solar maxima most in the Pacific, South America or Arabian until 1900. Since there were few records during these three centuries we needed addi-tional analysis on modern data. We took the last four solar cycles events (1950-2010) and made similar calculations. The results agreed with the former calculations. It might be that the mecha-nism for the Sun-Earth connection relies on the solar wind speed. In both records (1600-1900) and (1950-2010) the results showed a significant increase in earthquakes events in some of the tectonic plates linked to solar maxima. The So-lar wind energy striking the Earth’s magneto-sphere affects the entire environment because the pressure on the region increases and the magnetosphere shrinks sometimes four Earth’s radii. This sudden compression causes earth-quakes in specific plates. During the times of solar minima the pressure from the solar wind on the earth decreases, then the magnetosphere expands and earthquakes happen in a different pattern according to the geological feature on earth’s surface less frequently. Solar driven events include coronal mass ejections (CME) and coronal holes, which are at a maximum during the descending phase of solar activity. The tectonic are important because there is he-terogeneity in the crust and the tectonic stress depends on each region. The geo-effectiveness of solar wind from a coronal hole only depends on the position of the hole relative to the Earth and for the CMEs an additional factor is their velocity. The influence of these solar events could be detected from electromagnetic varia-tions on the ground prior
Que tem a Europa para oferecer aos recém-chegados a uma longa escolaridade obrigatória?
Espacios en blanco. Serie indagaciones , 2012,
Abstract: in this paper i aim to discuss the great question of the extension of compulsory education in european countries; this extension is politically presented as a greater benefit for all citizens. although public policies that intend to implement a longer school are focused on the compulsory aspect, this new education requires an appropriate response to its inherent and less focused universality: a time of quality education for all children and young people, without exception. in order to think about that, first i update the data relating to compulsory schooling in europe and the relative degree of compliance, and then discuss the issue of universality versus compulsory, arguing that the guarantee of the first precedes the application of the second and, in educational terms, that one is the larger issue; thirdly, i present some of the main measures taken in various european countries to welcome newcomers to schooling , to combat drop-outs and lack of compliance with the new compulsory education; fourthly, i discuss the relevance of these measures in light of the ultimate goal of greater universality of an quality education for all, especially for those newcomers to the compulsory schooling of more than nine years' duration. in this discussion i adopt a three-dimensional perspective: ethical and epistemological, socio-political and polycentric and finally academic. with this i advocate the need to use any strategy of school diversification and flexible curriculum as a springboard for more and better education for each and every one, through increased educational personalization, avoiding the easy fall on reproduction in school environment, of the starting social stratification, poverty and exclusion.

Abstract: the article examines the catholic church?s long term agenda, in the light of the ii vatican concilium (1962-1965), historical event which tried to fit the institution for the challenges of modernity. in spite of the conclave?s advances, the author thinks that, in the last forty years, a growing contradiction has taken place between the "external" mission of the church - which has, at least partially, recognized the modern values -, and the democratic deficit of its internal structures and practices. the article also evaluates the 25 years of john paul ii?s pontificate and the prospects of his upcoming succession.

Abstract: the present paper describes and analyzes high rio negro indigenous women's own conceptions about reproductive health, relating them to fecundity indicators. qualitative information point to a detailed and complex knowledge that area's indigenous women possess on their bodies and the care with their health. the fecundity levels and age patterns are related with the women's ethnicity, and, therefore, to the traditional healthcare system of these peoples. this research was developed between 1997 and 2003, in the iauaretê area indigenous land high rio negro (am), and had as first source of data rio negro's autonomous indigenous census. ciarn., executed by the federation of rio negro's indigenous organizations. foirn. in 1992.

Abstract: graft versus host disease (a-gvhd) is a systemic disease that affects bone marrow transplant patients receiving immunocompetent lymphocytes. the pathophysiology of this phenomenon is complex and involves a number of different effector immune responses to antigenic stimuli that are expressed due to tissue damage caused by disease or conditioning. this complication is frequent in bone marrow transplants and often determines the clinical outcome. in this chapter we discuss aspects of the biology of chronic graft versus host disease, its clinical evolution and the prophylactic and therapeutic management of this problem which can be devastating for patients undergoing allogeneic bone marrow transplantation.
