An Integral Representation of the Relative Entropy

Abstract: Recently the identity of de Bruijn type between the relative entropy and the relative Fisher information with the reference moving has been unveiled by Verdú via MMSE in estimation theory. In this paper, we shall give another proof of this identity in more direct way that the derivative is calculated by applying integrations by part with the heat equation. We shall also derive an integral representation of the relative entropy, as one of the applications of which the logarithmic Sobolev inequality for centered Gaussian measures will be given.
Effects of Bare-Ground Revegetation Techniques Using Imperata cylindrica on Changes in the Plant Cover and Species Richness during Early Succession  [PDF]

Abstract: Riverdikes are habitats that must be revegetated quickly in order to prevent soil erosion. With increasing pressure to improve the cost efficiency of management, new revegetation techniques suitable under reduced mowing frequencies are required. Imperata cylindrica (L.) P. Beauv. is an important component of grasslands in several Asian countries. Its vigorous rhizome elongation should be useful for quickly covering bare ground. We tested the effects of sowing (at two densities), transplanting, and sodding of I. cylindrica on plant cover and species richness of established vegetation over 3 years. The sodding and high-density sowing treatments achieved the most rapid increase in cover, followed by low-density sowing, transplanting, and the control. By year 2, however, the cover in the low- and high-density sowing treatments was similar. The sodding treatment had significantly fewer species than the other treatments in year 1. Between years 1 and 2 and years 2 and 3, the total number of species increased in the transplanting treatment, whereas it decreased in the sodding and two sowing treatments. Accordingly, if stabilization and erosion control are the priority, introduction of I. cylindrica using sod and high-density sowing is the most suitable method. If immediate green-up is not imperative, low-density sowing is likely to provide available resources for new seedlings of diverse species to become established, allowing the introduction of representative species in semi-natural grasslands. More research will be needed on the effects of introducing diverse species (e.g., sowing seed mixtures) that include I. cylindrica on the resulting floristic composition.
Zon-Cohen singularity and negative inverse temperature in a trapped particle limit

Abstract: We study a Brownian particle on a moving periodic potential. We focus on the statistical properties of the work done by the potential and the heat dissipated by the particle. When the period and the depth of the potential are both large, by using a boundary layer analysis, we calculate a cumulant generating function and a biased distribution function. The result allows us to understand a Zon-Cohen singularity for an extended fluctuation theorem from a view point of rare trajectories characterized by a negative inverse temperature of the biased distribution function.
Generalized coherent states for SU(n) systems

Abstract: Generalized coherent states are developed for SU(n) systems for arbitrary $n$. This is done by first iteratively determining explicit representations for the SU(n) coherent states, and then determining parametric representations useful for applications. For SU(n), the set of coherent states is isomorphic to a coset space $SU(n)/SU(n-1)$, and thus shows the geometrical structure of the coset space. These results provide a convenient $(2n - 1)$--dimensional space for the description of arbitrary SU(n) systems. We further obtain the metric and measure on the coset space, and show some properties of the SU(n) coherent states.
The Hayabusa Spacecraft Asteroid Multi-Band Imaging Camera: AMICA

Abstract: The Hayabusa Spacecraft Asteroid Multiband Imaging Camera (AMICA) has acquired more than 1400 multispectral and high-resolution images of its target asteroid, 25143 Itokawa, since late August 2005. In this paper, we summarize the design and performance of AMICA. In addition, we describe the calibration methods, assumptions, and models, based on measurements. Major calibration steps include corrections for linearity and modeling and subtraction of bias, dark current, read-out smear, and pixel-to-pixel responsivity variations. AMICA v-band data were calibrated to radiance using in-flight stellar observations. The other band data were calibrated to reflectance by comparing them to ground-based observations to avoid the uncertainty of the solar irradiation in those bands. We found that the AMICA signal was linear with respect to the input signal to an accuracy of << 1% when the signal level was < 3800 DN. We verified that the absolute radiance calibration of the AMICA v-band (0.55 micron) was accurate to 4% or less, the accuracy of the disk-integrated spectra with respect to the AMICA v-band was about 1%, and the pixel-to-pixel responsivity (flatfield) variation was 3% or less. The uncertainty in background zero-level was 5 DN. From wide-band observations of star clusters, we found that the AMICA optics have an effective focal length of 120.80 \pm 0.03 mm, yielding a field-of-view (FOV) of 5.83 deg x 5.69 deg. The resulting geometric distortion model was accurate to within a third of a pixel. We demonstrated an image-restoration technique using the point-spread functions of stars, and confirmed that the technique functions well in all loss-less images. An artifact not corrected by this calibration is scattered light associated with bright disks in the FOV.
Effect of exonic splicing regulation on synonymous codon usage in alternatively spliced exons of Dscam

Abstract: Codon Bias Indices (CBI) in the 3' boundary regions were reduced compared to the rest of the exonic regions among 48 and 33 ASEs of exon 6 and 9 clusters, respectively. These regional differences in CBI were affected by splicing frequency and distance from adjacent exons. Synonymous divergence levels between the 3' boundary region and the remaining exonic region of exon 6 ASEs were similar. Additionally, another sensitive comparison of paralogous exonic regions in recently retrotransposed processed genes and their parental genes revealed that, in the former, the differences in CBI between what were formerly the central regions and the boundary regions gradually became smaller over time.Analyses of the multiple ASEs of Dscam allowed direct tests of the effect of splice-related factors on synonymous codon usage and provided clear evidence that synonymous codon usage bias is restricted by exonic splicing signals near the intron-exon boundary. A similar synonymous divergence level between the different exonic regions suggests that the intensity of splice-related selection is generally weak and comparable to that of translational selection. Finally, the leveling off of differences in codon bias over time in retrotransposed genes meets the direct prediction of the tradeoff model that invokes conflict between translational superiority and splicing regulation, and strengthens the conclusions obtained from Dscam.Genomic data from many different organisms indicate that synonymous codon usage is typically biased. This bias is an intriguing property that reflects a composite of different evolutionary forces such as mutational bias, genetic drift, and natural selection [1-3]. Abstract: the shin-sanba, or medical 'new-midwife' who emerged during the meiji period (1868-1912) in japan seems, looked at from the present, to have successfully replaced the 'old-midwife' (ky?-sanba) and the increasingly criminalised 'non-licensed midwife' (mumenkyo-sanba), while midwifery was constantly developing as a modern medical profession. this paper suggests that the history of the midwife during the modern time was more complex than what we see today. first, the emergence and prosperity of shin-sanba were specific to the historical contingencies of modern japan and the interplay of various groups of historical actors - hygiene officers, sankai (obstetrician-gynaecologists), other midwives, and 'clients'. second, through the course of the modern period, shin-sanba did not replace other types of midwives and in fact, different kinds of midwives did coexist. finally, the existence and status of midwives greatly depended upon the laissez faire medical market, and the market's realities often contradicted the medical rhetoric that favoured shin-sanba over other kinds of midwives.

Abstract: As shin-sanba, ou 'novas parteiras' medicalizadas, que apareceram durante o período Meiji (1868-1912) no Jap o, parecem ter, aos olhos atuais, substituído rapidamente e sem conflito as 'velhas parteiras' (ky -sanba) e as cada vez mais criminalizadas 'parteiras n o licenciadas' (mumenkyo-sanba), enquanto a profiss o de parteira foi se desenvolvendo progressivamente como profiss o médica moderna. Este artigo sugere que a história das parteiras na era moderna foi mais complexa do que aquilo que se imagina atualmente. Primeiro, o surgimento e a prosperidade das shin-sanba estiveram intrinsecamente ligados às contingências do Jap o moderno e ao inter-relacionamento de vários grupos de atores históricos - autoridades da higiene, sankai (ginecologistas-obstetras), outras parteiras e 'clientes'. Segundo, ao longo da era moderna, as shin-sanba n o substituíram outros tipos de parteiras; na verdade, os diferentes tipos co-existiram. Por fim, a existência e o status das parteiras dependeram em grande parte de um mercado de servi os de saúde marcado pelo laissez-faire, e as realidades desse mercado muitas vezes contradiziam a retórica médica que favorecia as shin-sanba em rela o a outros tipos de parteiras.
