Neurodevelopmental and Behavioral Effects of Assisted Reproductive Techniques

N?ropsikiyatri Ar?ivi , 2010,
Abstract: Assisted reproductive techniques are used in the treatment of infertility worldwide. Long-term and multidimensional effects of these techniques on the embryo, especially on genetic programming, are still unknown. Moreover, the difficult period before parenting may affect the attachment and, consequently, the child’s mental health. The aim of this review is to discuss the neurodevelopmental and behavioral effects of assisted reproductive techniques from fetal and early childhood stages to adolescence. Follow-up studies, case reports, and meta-analyses investigating the neurological, psychiatric and genetic effects of in vitro fertilization techniques were reviewed. Animal studies suggest that the serum content, in which the embryo is preserved, may damage its genetic programming. Cerebral palsy, preterm delivery and low birth weight are the most frequent obstetric complications. Executive functions, memory and attention may be affected, especially in school-age children. Cases of autism have been reported as well. Preimplantation genetic screening has not been commonly used because of its high cost, complex technical procedures and ethical responsibilities. This paper suggests that multidisciplinary approach is needed in order to predict neurological and mental disorders. Parenting education and psychosocial support for infertile couples may facilitate the healthy attachment with their baby. (Archives of Neuropsychiatry 2010; 47: 275-8)
Atypical Symptoms Before the First Episode in Bipolar Children and Adolescents

N?ropsikiyatri Ar?ivi , 2009,
Abstract: In this study, atypical symptomatology and difficulties concerning the differential diagnosis of bipolar disorder (BPD) in children and adolescents before the first episode are discussed through 4 cases aged 5, 13, 14 and 16 years. Although all cases were treated and followed for months/years with diagnoses such as conduct disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, borderline disorder, dissociation, and psychosis, their diagnoses were considered as BPD after months or years. Misdiagnosis and/or delayed diagnosis of BPD are common among children and adolescents. Use of stimulant or antidepressant agents provoked manic symptoms, while antipsychotics (risperidone and aripiprazole) and mood stabilizers (valproic acid and lithium) were useful as combined and/or mono therapy for these cases. BPD should be considered in the differential diagnosis in child and adolescent cases with atypical symptomatology and treatment resistance.

Creative Education (CE) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ce.2013.47063
Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to uncover the perceptions of the elementary school teacher candidates who have related to the concept of “drama” through metaphors. The study group consisted of 129 third-year students taking the “Drama” course during the fall semester of the 2012-2013 academic year in the Department of Elementary School Teaching of Necmettin Erbakan University’s Faculty of Education. 66 of the teacher candidates, who participated in the study, were females and the 63 of them were males. The data of the study was obtained by students completing the sentence of “Drama is like… because…”. To do this, the teacher candidates were given a blank sheet of paper with the aforementioned sentence written at the top of the paper and were asked to express their thoughts by using that statement and by concentrating on only one metaphor. During the analysis of the data, frequency, percentage calculations and content analysis which is a qualitative method, were used. The process of analyzing and interpreting the metaphors developed by the teacher candidates was carried in five phases: (1) naming stage, (2) screening and clarifying phase, (3) compiling and category development phase, (4) proving the validity and reliability phase, (5) transferring the data into the computer. According to the findings of the study, the teacher candidates developed 30 valid metaphors related to the concept of “Drama”. These metaphors were then grouped under five different conceptual categories after examining them in terms of common characteristics.

Creative Education (CE) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ce.2014.519191
Abstract: Cultural sustainability is a very important concept. Drama can be considered in the area of cultural sustainability as well. Throughout the history of Turkish education, learning drama gained importance both in educational sciences as a teaching method and in arts education. The years of 1980s-1990s-2000s-2010s can be accepted as appropriate years to analyze the sustainability of drama. The purposes of this study are to obtain opinions of experts coming from different decades; to conduct interviews; to investigate how the transitions occurred among those decades and the reasons of this sustainability. In this qualitative research, data will be collected through semi-structured interviews and document analysis techniques. Participants will be chosen from four different decades.
Autism Symptoms Related to Tyrosinemia Type III: A Case Report

Turkish Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism , 2008,
Abstract: The published literature on tyrosinemia type III consists of only a few case reports. In this report, we present a patient with tyrosinemia type III, autism, and mental retardation. This patient’s speech improved and his autistic symptoms lessened on a tyrosine-restricted diet, although his mental retardation remained unchanged. This is the first published report of a patient with tyrosinemia type III and autism. This observation is significant due to the paucity of published information about tyrosinemia type III. A Case of Congenital Oligoastrocytoma

Erciyes Medical Journal , 2013,
Abstract: Congenital brain tumours, which have a poor prognosis, are commonly present at the perinatal period and very rarely encountered during childhood. The present case report describes a neonate who was diagnosed with congenital oligoastrocytoma. Physical examination revealed lethargy, macrocephaly, intercostal retractions, tachypnea, areflexia and pectus excavatum as well as the sign of sunset in both eyes. All the laboratory findings were within the normal range. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain showed a giant mass measuring 9x8x8 cm in the right ventricle. The neonate died on the eighth day of life due to rapid growth of the tumour and acute uncontrollable intracranial haemorrhage. Autopsy demonstrated that the right hemisphere was completely filled with a 17x15 cm cystic mass which contained blood, fibrin and necrotic tissue with a mucoid consistency. This cystic mass was histopathologically diagnosed as anaplastic oligoastrocytoma. The mitotic activity index was determined as 15% for all tumor cells.

Turkderm , 2013,
Abstract: Background and Design: Topical drugs are an important group of contact allergens. The present study aimed to evaluate contact sensitivity to topical drugs in patients with contact dermatitis. Materials and Methods: Between 2003 and 2008, 129 patients were followed up at the Department of Dermatology at Ankara University School of Medicine with clinically suspected contact sensitivity to topical drugs. In this study, the patch test reactions to the European Standard Battery and topical drugs used by the patients and medicament patch test results were evaluated. Results: Positive patch test reaction to one or more allergens was found in 80 (62.0%) of 129 patients included in the study. Sixty-one of the 80 patients (61/129, 47.3%) had positive patch test reaction to medicaments. Medicament sensitivity was detected in 37.9% (49/129) of subjects. Nitrofurazone was found to be the most common allergen (18.6%). Discussion: The present study showed that topical drugs are a frequent cause of allergic contact dermatitis. Therefore, the probability of contact sensitivity to topical drugs should also be considered in patients with the clinical diagnosis of allergic contact dermatitis and, suspected cases should be evaluated further with patch testing in order to find the responsible allergens.
