Abstract: Introduction. Previous studies related alterations in non-conventional seminal parameters with recurrent early embryonic death for one couple. A reference standard of clinical assessment is required for the management of these kinds of patients. Objective. Normal semen parameters were established based on functional tests including lipid peroxidation of sperm membranes, antioxidant capacity of seminal plasma and integrity of sperm chromatin to compare with men whose partners have recurrent early embryonic death. These parameters set reference values to identify subfertile individuals whose condition can be attributed to altered semen parameters. Materials and methods. The conventional and non-conventional semen parameters of 47 samples of semen were evaluated. Thirty-six samples were from subfertile individuals whose partners had a history of early recurrent embryo death, and 11 samples were from individuals with recent evidence of normal fertility. Results. By discriminant analysis, the two groups were classified as follows: a value below 0.50 for 86.1% of individuals in the group of recurrent early embryonic death, and a value above 0.50 to classify 81.8% of individuals in the group of recent fertility. Conclusions. This reference value of 0.5 based on the results of sperm tests can identify infertile male patients whose partners have a history of early embryonic death. This will aid the physician to suggest treatments more focused on the possible cause of subfertility.

Abstract: Objective: To characterize the main psycho pathological findings and neuropsychological profiles in a group of offspring of parents with Bipolar Disorder of Antioquia-Colombian ancestry. Methods: 20 children of parents with bipolar disorder type I were assessed using the K-SADS-PL in order to establish their diagnosis according with DSM-IV-TR criteria. Neuropsychological assessment was done by using subtests of the "Evaluación Neuropsicológica Infantil (ENI)" and the abbreviated version of WISC III. Bipolar parents and biological co-parents were evaluated with the Diagnostic Interview for Genetic Studies (DIGS). Results: The most common psychiatric disorders found were separation anxiety disorder (35%), simple phobia (20%), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (50%), and oppositional defiant disorder (20%). This group of offspring also presented subsyndromal anxiety and ADHD symptoms as a common psychopathological finding. None of the children assessed had bipolar disorder and only two cases presented major depressive disorder. However, subsyndromal symptoms for mania were found in a quarter of the sample. The main neuropsychological findings in the offspring were difficulties in memory evocation, memory recall, and long term memory. Conclusions: This group of children and adolescents of parents with BD type I from paisa population (Colombia) genetic isolate presents DSM-IV-TR diagnoses of anxiety and disruptive disorders and subsyndromal symptoms of several psychiatric disorders including BD. Some neuropsychological measures show low performance in memory and attention tests. Universitas Psychologica , 2007,
Abstract: Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has heterogeneous symptoms with diverse grades of severity. Latentclass cluster analysis (LCCA) can be used to classify children, using direct data from any instrument that reports thesesymptoms, without previous gold standard diagnosis. One ADHD symptoms checklist, and one ADHD comorbiditiesquestionnaire were used. LCCAs were developed for each instrument, which were administered to a sample of 540children and adolescents, aged 4-17 years, from the regular school of Manizales-Colombia. A simple correspondenceanalysis (SCA) was done to determine the relationships between the groups classified from both LCCAs. Six clusters were obtained from ADHD checklist and five from the ADHD comorbidities questionnaire. SCA found fourindependent groups, derived from the concordances between the 11 clusters obtained by the LCCAs from bothinstruments. These findings suggest that LCCA and SCA can be use as accurate taxometric procedures to classifyexternalizing psychopathologies.

Abstract: introduction. accurate description of neuropsychological characteristics of children with affective bipolar disorder (bpd) ha been difficult because the diagnostic validity and the confusion with attention deficit/ hyperactive disorder (adhd), has limited the accurate description of its neuropsychological characteristics. objective. to determine the neuropsychological characteristics of children and adolescents, aged 6 to 16 years, with bpd type i (without adhd comorbidity), compared with a control group without bpd neither adhd, which were matched by sex and age, from medellín-colombia. materials and methods. a cross-sectional study was designed, selected 41 children and adolescents, which were assigned to two groups: bpds (n = 20; age: 11 ± 2,7), and controls (n = 21, age 11.4 ± 2.53). 15 participants were males, in each group. neuropsychological tasks to assess attention, memory and executive function (ef) were administered. non parametric comparisons between groups were done. results. bpd group showed statistically significant poorer performances (p< 0,001) in tasks related with attention a ef. effect sizes of the variables with statistic significant differences were larger to huge (> 0,7). conclusions. findings suggest that children and adolescents with bpd (without adhd comorbidity) have some kind deficiency in prefrontal circuitries functioning, related to inhibitory control and cognitive organization.

Abstract: giardia intestinalis infection is prevalent throughout the world and widely distributed in developing countries. in general, children display serious consequences to their state of health, including slow height-weight development; therefore, the main aim of this study was to determine the association between giardia infection and the nutritional status of children who participate in the program of complementary feeding (mejoramiento alimentario y nutricional de antioquia (mana) - instituto colombiano de bienestar familiar (icbf)). a cross-sectional study examining the association of giardiasis with nutritional status was conducted. a total of 2035 children aged eight months to six years-old were studied. data were collected using structured questionnaires, anthropometric measurements and laboratory analysis of blood and stool samples. analysis of the results showed that 27.6% of children were infected with g. intestinalis, while 8.1% and 1.9% were mildly and significantly underweight, respectively, and 14.1% presented stunting. giardiasis was statistically identified as a strong predictor of stunting in this study population.
