Mixed variant calcinosis cutis
Fakeha Firdous,Idrees Akhter Afroz,Syed Sibghatullah Quadri,Atiya Begum
Journal of Medical and Allied Sciences , 2012,
Abstract: A 7 year old boy presented with multiple, raised, hard nodules of varying sizes over both elbows and right knee and small milia like lesions over the chin. Serum levels of calcium, phosphorus and uric acid were normal. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) followed by excisional biopsy was done. A final diagnosis of calcinosis cutis was made based on histopathological and clinical findings. This is a rare case of mixed variants/subtypes-subepidermal calcified nodules and milia like lesions.
Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: Current Status and Future Direction
Atiya Dhala
Clinical and Developmental Immunology , 2012, DOI: 10.1155/2012/854941
Abstract: Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is commonly associated with connective tissue diseases (CTDs) including systemic sclerosis and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The prevalence of PAH in SLE is estimated to be 0.5% to 17.5%. The pathophysiology of PAH involves multiple mechanisms from vasculitis and in-situ thrombosis to interstitial pulmonary fibrosis which increases pulmonary vascular resistance, potentially leading to right heart failure. Immune and inflammatory mechanisms may play a significant role in the pathogenesis or progression of PAH in patients with CTDs, establishing a role for anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive therapies. The leading predictors of PAH in SLE are Raynaud phenomenon, anti-U1RNP antibody, and anticardiolipin antibody positivity. The first-line of diagnostic testing for patients with suspected SLE-associated PAH (SLE-aPAH) involves obtaining a Doppler echocardiogram. Once the diagnosis is confirmed by right heart catheterization, SLE-aPAH patients are generally treated with oxygen, anticoagulants, and vasodilators. Although the prognosis and therapeutic responsiveness of these patients have improved with the addition of intensive immunosuppressive therapies, these treatments are still largely unproven. Recent data put the one-year survival rate for SLE-aPAH patients at 94%. Pregnant women are most at risk of dying due to undiagnosed SLE-aPAH, and screening should be considered essential in this population.

Metagenomics and its Application in Rumen Ecosystem: Potential Biotechnological Prospects
Shakira Ghazanfar,Atiya Azim
Pakistan Journal of Nutrition , 2009,
Abstract: Genetic and biological diversity of microorganisms is an important area of scientific research. Considering the importance of ruminants in livestock strategies their ability to converts locally available feedstuff to animal products should be improved. Recent advances in the molecular biology and genomics now offer new opportunities to conduct a more holistic examination of the structure and function of rumen communities. To understand the complex microbial communities function and how microbes interact within their niches represents a major challenge for rumen microbiologists today. Metagenomics has the potential for providing insight into the functional dimensions of the rumen genomic database and will help to achieve a major goal of rumen microbiology; the complexities of microbial communities function and interaction among these microbes. This review summarizes the molecular methods of culture-independent insight 'metagenomics' and their recent application to studies of the rumen ecosystem for enhancing the livestock productivity.
Existence of solutions and convergence results for dynamic initial value problems using lower and upper solutions
Atiya H. Zaidi
Electronic Journal of Differential Equations , 2009,
Abstract: In this article, we study the existence of solutions to first order non-linear initial value problems within the field of "dynamic equations on time scales". We employ the method of upper and lower solutions and Schauder's fixed point theorem. We also provide sufficient conditions under which the upper and lower solutions converge uniformly to a solution. Some examples are given to illustrate the new results.
On the non--multiplicity of solutions to matrix equations on time scales
Atiya H. Zaidi
Mathematics , 2012,
Abstract: In this paper we establish the non--multiplicity of solutions to first order matrix dynamic equations on time scales. The new results verify and extend the notions developed in \cite{thesis} to more complex systems of $n^2$ matrices with the help of ideas developed in \cite[Chap 5]{BP}, identifying Lipschitz conditions suitable to generalised $n^2$--models on time scales.
Design of supercontinuum generating photonic crystal fiber at 1.06, 1.31 and 1.55 µm wavelengths for medical imaging and optical transmission systems  [PDF]
Feroza Begum, Yoshinori Namihira
Natural Science (NS) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/ns.2011.35054
Abstract: We propose broad supercontinuum spectrum generating highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber (HN-PCF) which can be used in ultrahigh- resolution optical coherence tomography and optical transmission systems. Using full vector finite difference method, we investigated the different properties of HN-PCF. Broadband su-percontinuum spectrum is numerically calculated by using nonlinear Schr?dinger equation. Investigation showed that it is possible to obtain longitudinal resolution in a biological tissue of 1.3 μm, 1.2 μm and 1.1 μm by using picosecond continuum light at center wavelengths of 1.06 μm, 1.31 μm and 1.55 μm, respectively.
One-Pot Four Component Reaction for the Synthesis of Formazans in an Environmentally Benign Procedure Mediated by KHSO4  [PDF]
Pranab Jyoti Das, Jesmin Begum
Green and Sustainable Chemistry (GSC) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/gsc.2015.53016
Abstract: A microwave mediated solvent free one pot synthesis of formazans is developed using the solid acid, KHSO4. The products were obtained in a short reaction time in high yield. This study was undertaken to find an alternative and green method for the synthesis of formazans in the absence of corrosive mineral acids, buffered solutions and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
