URN: urn:nbn:de:0114-fqs0501206 Democratic Education: Ethnographic Challenges is an important resource for all who are interested not only in education but also in research, public administration and policy analysis. Ethnographers from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, the United Kingdom and the United States share with us research conducted in their countries. The ten studies examine in depth the impact of new-right policies in educational settings. In this regard, democracy and social justice are discussed while focusing on gender, social class, ethnicity and nationality. The authors frame their work in diverse ways including the use of Marxist, feminist, poststructuralist and postcolonial theories. The findings invite us to think critically about daily life in schools. Aside from the overall importance of the topic, this book is also a good example of interdisciplinary and international collaboration. URN: urn:nbn:de:0114-fqs0204315 SEARLE's book is crucial reading for those interested in critical pedagogy. Based on his teaching experience in different countries over a period of twenty-five years, SEARLE describes education as it is connected with social concerns. Following the principles of the Brazilian pedagogue Paulo FREIRE, SEARLE encouraged his working class students to express their reality through poems, plays, and short stories. In doing so, both SEARLE and his young students became aware that they had the power to drive the curriculum towards goals that were connected with their own social problems or those of other working class communities. In addition, the students were empowered to make a difference in their own lives. This book is a good resource for educators who are willing to try alternative ways of teaching.

Abstract: uveal metastases are the most frequent malign intraocular tumour, of which more than 80% are localized in the choroids. this, together with the progressive increase in its incidence, makes its study and review necessary for a correct diagnosis and treatment in current clinical practice. etiology varies according to the sex of the patient: lung carcinoma metastasises most frequently in men and breast carcinoma in women. these tend to multifocality and are generally localized in the posterior pole. fifty percent of cases follow an asymptomatic development, but they can cause loss of vision, scotomas, metamorphopsias and photopsias. charactersitic ophthamoscopic examination shows a placoid, homogenous choroidal lesion with a creamy appearance. the differential diagnosis must consider the amelanotic nevus, choroidal amelanotic melanoma, choroidal haemangioma, rear scleritis, choroidal osteoma, chorioretinitis, harada?s disease, rhegmatogenous retina detachment, uveal effusion syndrome, and serous central chorioretinopathy. an exhaustive history and complete ophthalmological examination are essential to the diagnosis, to which fluorescein angiography, ocular echography, fine needle puncture aspiration (fnpa), computerized tomography and magnetic resonance can be added as complementary tests. treatment of these tumours is usually the systemic treatment of the primary tumour; the possibilities of local treatment are observation, external radiotherapy, transpupillary thermotherapy and enucleation.

Abstract: Transcorneal Electrical Stimulation (TES) was applied to a group of volunteer patients suffering from Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP), in order to investigate the effect of TES in Visual Acuity (VA). 28 partial blind patients with diagnosis of classic RP, Usher syndrome I and/or II were stimulated transcornealy, during a period of 52 weeks using a non conventional waveform, only in the lowest visually capable eye. The proposed waveform has been modeled from the natural response of human retina and delivered by means of an adaptive generator designed and built for tissue stimulation. Statistical results show the improvement of average VA or at least the contention of the disease natural progress. Categorized analysis of results indicates the same effect that if the age of patients, time since diagnosis and genetic disorder variation (classic RP, Usher syndrome I and/or II) are considered, in this case clinical and electrophysiological follow-up parameters were statistically analyzed in order to know the effect of TES. General results yield an improvement of 48.15% in the average of VA for stimulated eyes against an average degreasing of -8.06% in the same scale, with respect to their basal condition before the start of the experiment.

Abstract: In this paper, we initiated the study of the mechanism for DNA repair by homologous recombination in the primitive eukaryote E. histolytica using UV-C (150 J/m2) irradiated trophozoites. DNA double strand-breaks were evidenced in irradiated cells by TUNEL and comet assays and evaluation of the EhH2AX histone phosphorylation status. In E. histolytica genome, we identified genes homologous to yeast and human RAD52 epistasis group genes involved in DNA double strand-breaks repair by homologous recombination. Interestingly, the E. histolytica RAD52 epistasis group related genes were differentially expressed before and after UV-C treatment. Next, we focused on the characterization of the putative recombinase EhRAD51, which conserves the typical architecture of RECA/RAD51 proteins. Specific antibodies immunodetected EhRAD51 protein in both nuclear and cytoplasmic compartments. Moreover, after DNA damage, EhRAD51 was located as typical nuclear foci-like structures in E. histolytica trophozoites. Purified recombinant EhRAD51 exhibited DNA binding and pairing activities and exchanging reactions between homologous strands in vitro.E. histolytica genome contains most of the RAD52 epistasis group related genes, which were differentially expressed when DNA double strand-breaks were induced by UV-C irradiation. In response to DNA damage, EhRAD51 protein is overexpressed and relocalized in nuclear foci-like structures. Functional assays confirmed that EhRAD51 is a bonafide recombinase. These data provided the first insights about the potential roles of the E. histolytica RAD52 epistasis group genes and EhRAD51 protein function in DNA damage response of this ancient eukaryotic parasite.Entamoeba histolytica, the protozoan causative of human amoebiasis, has a world-wide distribution with a higher prevalence in developing countries, affecting more than 50 million people each year [1]. Trophozoites show a dramatic virulence variability that could be related to great genome plasticity
