Ciência & Saúde Coletiva , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-81232010000300021
Abstract: the aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of the indexes dai and iotn in predicting the need of orthodontic treatment based in one property: reproducibility. the index dai was developed in usa in 1989 and can identify 10 occlusal alterations that result, mathematically, in scores, with weights based in its relative importance according with the judgment of laypeople. the iotn was developed in england also in 1989 and incorporates an aesthetic component ac and a component of dental health dhc. the ac component consists on a scale illustrated with 10 photos which had been divided in bands of degrees in accordance with a hierarchic scale and classifies the patients in degrees of treatment needed. the instruments of collection of the data were: plastic rule of dhc component and an aesthetic visual scale of component ac praised for the iotn and one periodontal oms probe praised for dai. the sample was composite by 60 patients. the results indicated that both indexes were highly reproducible in accordance with pearson and spearman coefficients, which were strengthened by t-tests of student and wilcoxon, respectively. the correlation results between the examiners had varied between r=0.85 and r=1.00.

Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S2176-94512010000200012
Abstract: objectives: to analyze the influence of mandibular sagittal position in the determination of facial attractiveness. methods: facial profile photographs were taken of an afro-descendant man and a caucasian man, as well as an afro-descendant woman and a caucasian woman. these photos were manipulated on the computer using adobe photoshop? cs2 to produce-from each original face-a straight profile, three simulating retrusion and three protrusion mandibular discrepancies. in all, 28 photographs were evaluated by orthodontists (n = 20), oral maxillofacial surgeons (n = 20), plastic artists (n = 20) and laypersons (n = 20). the descriptive analysis was performed by calculating the mean and standard deviation for each group. results: the straight facial profile was met with greater acceptance by afro-descendant male faces and female faces. caucasian males found a lightly concave facial profile with a more prominent mandible to be the most pleasant. after an analysis of skeletal discrepancies simulations, caucasian males also showed a preference for mandibular protrusion versus retrusion. females, however, preferred convex over concave profiles. conclusion: the results showed agreement between groups of evaluators in selecting the most attractive profiles. regarding male faces, a straight profile with a slightly concave face seemed more attractive and a straight facial profile was also greatly valued.

Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics , 2013,
Abstract: OBJECTIVE: The objective of this article is to evaluate the need of orthodontic treatment, prevalence and severity of the malocclusions in individuals of black ethnicity in a representative sample of schoolchildren of the city of Salvador/Brazil, as well as to verify if the malocclusion was affected by socio-demographic conditions such as age and gender. METHODS: The reference population was constituted of schoolchildren with age between 12 and 15 years, enrolled in public and private schools. The malocclusion was evaluated in 486 students of black ethnicity, with ages varying from 12 to 15 years, selected in random sample in multiple stages. The adopted significance level was 1% and the power of the test was 90%. A questionnaire registering demographic characteristics was filled out by each individual. The Dental Aesthetics Index (DAI) was used by previously calibrated examiners (kappa 0.89), according to criteria of the World Health Organization. RESULTS: It was verified that most of the individuals (76%) had little or any need for orthodontic treatment. About 24% showed a condition of severe malocclusion, culminating in a vital need for orthodontic treatment. The main occlusal characteristics found in the group with high need of orthodontic treatment were dental crowding and accentuated overjet. The age was positively related to the improvement of the maxillary overjet and to the presence of crowding. CONCLUSION: The development of public politics that aim the insertion of orthodontic treatment among the procedures of health programs, with the implementation and development of specialized centers, is fundamental.

Araujo, Helder Farias Pereira de;Rodrigues, Roberta Costa;
Zoologia (Curitiba) , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1984-46702011000500011
Abstract: even though the caatinga has been identified as an important area of endemism for south american birds, few studies have been conducted on the distribution, evolution and ecology of birds in this biome. understanding how habitats contribute to maintain the regional bird diversity is extremely important. in this study, carried out in the backwoods of the state of alagoas, we present a rapid survey of a caatinga area and discuss the composition of the avifauna in different habitats. from the record of 105 species, we estimated a local richness of 120 (± 5) species. among the areas surveyed, the dense caatinga shrub areas contributed with more than 42% of the species, holding most of the forest-dependent birds. the open field areas and the vegetation patches contributed 26 and 24% of the observed richness, respectively. the bird community at the vegetation patches is more similar to that registered in the open caatinga shrub areas, than to the fauna of the open fields where these patches are located. our results support the need to conserve environments which harbor typical caatinga vegetation, and also vegetation patches with those characteristics in greatly altered environments.

This paper results from a case study and aims to understand how there has been dialogue between the public school and hip hop movement, considering the challenges to building meaningful educational practices for youth. We treat the character education movement from the dimensions of the construction of citizenship, political culture, the configuration of sociopolitical and economic scenario, of subjectivity and political organization. For this we follow a crew activities developed in the movement located in an outlying neighborhood of the city and educational practice that movement in the school limited the Open School Program. Visualize the experience of hip hop movement in the program a learning opportunity for the school in order to contextualize their knowledge in order to gain greater compliance of the school community, especially young people. Accordingly, we find two types of ownership of the educational practices of the movement for school: teach

Abstract: In order to assess the prevalence of physical activity (PA) and its relationship with lipid profile among adolescents, a cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach was conducted with 102 adolescents aged 15 to 19 years from public schools of Campina Grande, Paraiba, Brazil. The following variables were analyzed: age, gender, ethnicity, maternal education, socioeconomic status, nutritional status, the practice of PA and lipid profile. The variables were obtained through validated form, anthropometry (weight and height) and blood collection by contract laboratory. Double entry and SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) 22.0 were performed. First, a descriptive analysis of all variables was conducted, as well as measures of central tendency and dispersion for continuous variables. Accordingly, distribution was tested for normality using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. According to results, correlation was evaluated by Pearson/Spearman tests. Significance level of 5% was adopted for all analyses. The study was approved by the Ethics Approach Committee (EAC) of the State University of Paraíba. The most prevalent sex in the sample was female and regarding maternal education, 35.4% had complete high school. Regarding serum lipoproteins, 16% showed elevated total cholesterol and HDL (High Density Lipoprotein) 66% below the desired value. With regard to physical activity, 60.8% had insufficient PA levels. The sample showed changes in lipid profile and insufficiently active life style, besides having overpowered the eutrophic nutritional status. No statistically significant correlations between variables of the lipid profile and the time of PA were observed. These findings highlight the importance of physical exercise for maintaining health and suggest studies with larger populations in order to check the scientific literature regarding this topic.

Abstract: Phosphate fertilizers when applied to the soil, besides being harvested by the crops, promote a residual effect that can be offered to subsequent crops. The objective of this research was to evaluate the residual effect of phosphate fertilization applied to maize cultivation on the successor crop, cowpea, in the Cerrado region in Maranhao. The research was carried out in the experimental area of Federal University of Maranhao (UFMA), located in the city of Chapadinha, MA (3°44'30\"S, 43°21'37''W). The experimental design was in randomized blocks, with six treatments and four replications. The treatments were composed of the following residual P doses: 0, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100 kg·ha-1 of P2O5. The cultivation of cowpea (cultivar BRS guariba) was sown at a spacing of 1.0 × 0.20 m. The cowpea proved to be efficient in the use of residual phosphate fertilization, since it promoted grain yield close to the national average. The cultivation of cowpea in previously cultivated areas is feasible, in order to take advantage of the residual phosphate fertilization in the Cerrado of East of Maranhao. The phosphorus dose applied in the predecessor crop corresponding to 80 kg·ha-1 of P2O5 promoted higher grain yield (393.44 Mg·ha-1) and a greater profit margin (US $326.26). Thus, it is feasible to grow cowpea in previously cultivated areas, in order to take advantage of residual phosphate fertilization.
