PLOS ONE , 2012, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0040231
Abstract: Purpose The aim of the study was to evaluate connectivity modifications in the Default Mode Network (DMN) in patients with cerebral glioma, and to correlate these modifications to tumor characteristics. Methods Twenty-four patients with a left-hemisphere cerebral tumor (14 grade II and 10 grade IV gliomas) and 14 healthy age-matched right-hand volunteers were enrolled in the study. Subjects underwent fMRI while performing language tasks for presurgical mapping. Data was analyzed with independent component analysis in order to identify the DMN. DMN group maps were produced by random-effect analysis (p<0.001, FDR-corrected). An analysis of variance across the three groups (p<0.05) and post-hoc t-test contrasts between pairs of groups were calculated (p<0.05, FDR-corrected). Results All three groups showed typical DMN areas. However, reduced DMN connectivity was detected in tumor patients with respect to controls. A significantly increased and reduced integration of DMN areas was observed in the hippocampal and prefrontal regions, respectively. Modifications were closely related to tumor grading. Moreover, the DMN lateralized to the hemisphere contralateral to tumor in the low-grade, but not in the high-grade tumor patients. Conclusion Modifications of DMN connectivity were induced by gliomas and differed for high and low grade tumors.

Abstract: To prospectively evaluate the feasibility of using magnetic resonance (MR) techniques for in-vivo assessing a rat diabetic model of limb ischemia. Unilateral hind limb ischemia was induced by ligation of the iliac-femoral artery in male streptozotocin-treated and non-diabetic control rats. Four weeks after ligation, rats underwent MR Angiography (MRA), T1-weighted and Short Time Inversion Recovery (STIR) sequences and muscle Proton MR Spectroscopy (1H-MRS) on both hind limbs. After MR examinations, immunoblotting and immunofluorescence analysis were performed. MRA showed a signal void due to flow discontinuation distal to the artery ligation. T1-weighted and STIR images showed, respectively, the presence of tissue swelling (p = 0.018 for non-diabetic; p = 0.027 for diabetic rats) and signal hyperintensity in tissue affected by occlusion. Mean total creatine/water for the occluded limb was significantly lower than for the non-occluded limbs in both non-diabetic (5.46×10?4 vs 1.14×10?3, p = 0.028) and diabetic rats (1.37×10?4 vs 1.10×10?3; p = 0.018). MR Imaging and 1H-MRS changes were more pronounced in diabetic than in non-diabetic occluded limbs (p = 0.032). MR findings were confirmed by using histological findings. Combined MR techniques can be used to demonstrate the presence of structural and metabolic changes produced by iliac-femoral artery occlusion in rat diabetic model of limb ischemia.

Abstract: The role of amyloid beta (Aβ) in brain function and in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) remains elusive. Recent publications reported that an increase in Aβ concentration perturbs pre-synaptic release in hippocampal neurons. In particular, it was shown in vitro that Aβ is an endogenous regulator of synaptic transmission at the CA3-CA1 synapse, enhancing its release probability. How this synaptic modulator influences neuronal output during physiological stimulation patterns, such as those elicited in vivo, is still unknown. Using a realistic model of hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neurons, we first implemented this Aβ-induced enhancement of release probability and validated the model by reproducing the experimental findings. We then demonstrated that this synaptic modification can significantly alter synaptic integration properties in a wide range of physiologically relevant input frequencies (from 5 to 200 Hz). Finally, we used natural input patterns, obtained from CA3 pyramidal neurons in vivo during free exploration of rats in an open field, to investigate the effects of enhanced Aβ on synaptic release under physiological conditions. The model shows that the CA1 neuronal response to these natural patterns is altered in the increased-Aβ condition, especially for frequencies in the theta and gamma ranges. These results suggest that the perturbation of release probability induced by increased Aβ can significantly alter the spike probability of CA1 pyramidal neurons and thus contribute to abnormal hippocampal function during AD.

Abstract: despite the oyapock river border had been attached to brazilian territory in 1900, the official colonization occurred only in the 1920's. the brazilian federal government strategy was to build an agro-colony called clevelandia. between 1924 and 1927, it was transformed into a penal colony, causing the failure of the agro-colony experience. the populating process moved to nearly martinique village, an oldest black and riverine community, after renamed to oyapock. this article presents human and social relations established at those places in three different moments: the agro-colony, the penal-colony and the new martinique community. the historical sources were used to map these places. the objective is to understand, with the aid of 'cartography', which kind of relationship among this diverse population was established and how it was happened. despite the governmental hierarchizing of space, the individual real life reinvented it creating social relations not planned by the power of state: the 'heterotopias'.

Studying narratives, institutions, curriculum, professional and extra-professional customs of several Palestinian social scientists currently researching and/or teaching in the northern occupied West Bank helps draw a picture concerning an academic space split according to important dividing dynamics. The main structuring split is that which differentiates research logics from teaching logics. Moreover, this feature is combined with a spatial polarisation process of academic assets which leads toward a better understanding of the interviewed social scientist's entrenchment and which further explains the different types of their involvement.

Abstract: For more than one reason, Caroline Abu Sada's book is seminal. First of all, her work studies the re-shaping of polity inside the Palestinian society since the second Intifada. Based on the authors' PhD dissertation, this book contributes to the limited works on political sociology addressing post-Oslo Palestine (after 2000). This book is also promising in terms of methodology, claiming to conduct a ''bottom-up'' approach looking at a society still over-analyzed in terms of polemology, elites...
