The principal reservoir host of cutaneous leishmaniasis in the urban areas of Manaus, Central Amazon of Brazil
Arias, Jorge R.;Naiff, Roberto D.;
Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 1981, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02761981000300005
Abstract: twenty one opossums (didelphis marsupialis) from disturbed primary forest in the vicinity of manaus, and seven from an isolated island of secondary vegetation within the city of manaus, were examined for the presence of leishmania. of the opossums from the primary forests, 13 (61.9%) were found to be positive for leishmania braziliensis guyanenesis. one additional opossum was found to be positive for le. mexicana amazonensis. a simple and economical trapping technique for opossums is presented here, and a control method in special cases is suggested.
Besnoitia (protozoa: toxoplasmatinae) isolado de mucuras Didelphis marsupialis na Regi?o Amaz?nica, Brasil
Naiff, Roberto D.;Arias, Jorge R.;
Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 1983, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02761983000400006
Abstract: from a total of 224 didelphis marsupialis examined, in 15 were found cysts of besnoitia in muscles and viscera. it's the first time that this protozoan is isolated from naturally infected animals in brazil. the experimental transmission to laboratory animals was done by the inoculum of tissue and cysts triturated.
Notes on Amazonian Bittacidae (Mecoptera) with the descriptions of two new species
Penny, Norman D.;Arias, Jorge R.;
Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 1982, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02761982000300005
Abstract: new species of issikiella and nannobittacus are described and notes are presented on other amazonian species of mecoptera.
A new triatomine host of trypanosoma from the Central Amazon of Brazil: Cavernicola lenti n.sp. (Hemiptera, Reduviidae, Triatominae)
Barrett, Toby V.;Arias, Jorge R.;
Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 1985, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02761985000100014
Abstract: adults and nymphs of cavernicola lenti, new species, from amazonas state, brazil, are described and illustrated. observations on the biology of the new species are presented. preliminaty findings indicate that c. lenti is a probable vector of bat trypanosomes.
A new sand fly in the subgenus Nyssomyia (Diptera, psychodidae) from the Amazon basin of Brazil
Arias, Jorge R.;Freitas, Rui A. de;Barrett, Toby V.;
Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 1984, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02761984000300005
Abstract: lutzomyia (nyssomyia) waltoni n.sp., a new species of phlebotomine sand fly related to l. ylephiletor, l. intermedia and l. hernandezi, is described and illustrated. available ecological observations ar presented.
A rewiew of the subgenus Trichopygomyia Barretto, 1962; with description of a new species from the brazilian Amazon Basin (Diptera: Psychodidae, Phlebotominae)
Arias, Jorge R.;Ready, Paul D.;Freitas, Rui A. de;
Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 1983, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02761983000400009
Abstract: the subgenus trichopygomyia barreto, 1962 of the phlebotomine genus lutzomyia fran?a, 1924 is reviewed. this subgenus corresponds to the informal species group longispina of theodor (1965). lutzomyia (trichopygomya) ratcliffei n.sp. from the brazilian amazon basin is described. figures, keys, distribution maps and notes on ecology are presented for all the known forms. the better known species are most frequently encountered in armadillo burrows and, therefore, could well be vectors of leishmania.
íNDICES PARA DETECTAR EN TIEMPO REAL PROBLEMAS DE ESTABILIDAD DE VOLTAJE

Scientia Et Technica , 2010,
ESTRUCTURA DE LAS COMUNIDADES MACROALGALES ASOCIADAS AL LITORAL ROCOSO DEL DEPARTAMENTO DE CóRDOBA, COLOMBIA
QUIRóS-RODRíGUEZ,JORGE A.; ARIAS-RíOS,JORGE E.; RUIZ VEGA,ROSALBA;
Caldasia , 2010,
Abstract: the ecological behavior of macroalgal communities from the department of córdoba, in the colombian caribbean is unknown. to determine diversity, abundance and distribution of species, the structure of the macroalgal communities distributed throughout the coastline of the department of cordoba was evaluated in seven stations during may 2004 to october 2005; four located in the morrosquillo ecoregion and three in the darién ecoregion. to establish macroalgal cover, in each station a grid of 625 cm2 was used to collect the species during five random repetitions. a total of 50 species of associated algae were reported, 27% of which are red algae, 17% green algae and 12% brown algae; of the 20 families were found, dictyotaceae presented the highest number of species (10), followed by gracilariaceae (7) rhodomelaceae (7), and halymeniaceae (4). the taxa with the high number of species were gracilaria (6) padina (5), and caulerpa (4). the composition of the macroalgal communities associated to the sector between punta bolivar and punta mestizos was integrated by three divisions with the red algae exhibiting the highest percentage of cover (78%), followed by the green algae (14%) and finally the brown algae (9%). in the sector between punta broqueles and puerto escondido, the red algae showed the highest percentage of cover (62%), followed by the brown algae (23%) and finally the green algae (15%). the classification analyses (upgma) showed an affinity coefficient of 57%, indicating that the structure and composition of associated macroalgal communities a similar between the two ecoregions. this behavior showed the conformation of stable units in each station suggesting a certain spatial homogeneity which can be related with the kind of substrate and environmental changes of each station.

Field Monitoring of Cypermethrin Residual Effect on the Mortality Rates of the Phlebotomine Sand Fly Lutzomyia longipalpis in the State of Paraíba, Brazil
Passerat De Silans, Laura Ney Marcelino;Dedet, Jean-Pierre;Arias, Jorge R;
Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 1998, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02761998000300012
Abstract: in a visceral leishmaniasis endemic locality of northeast of brasil where all settlements were treated with cypermethrin, a follow-up of lutzomyia longipalpis populations was carried out by regular collections. the residual effect of the insecticide was studied using biological assays on three different types of walls. the results showed that the insecticides had an effect on intradomiciliar lu. longipalpis populations limited to two months, and had no significant effect on peridomiciliar vector populations. the mortality rates of the tested sandflies were variable according to the type of wall. the decreasing of the insecticide effect was marked since the 3rd month, and mortality rates were identical whatever the type of wall since the 4th month. unsufficient residual effect was detected after the 4th month.
