SHS Web of Conferences , 2012, DOI: 10.1051/shsconf/20120100195
Safety Climates in Construction Industry: Understanding the Role of Construction Sites and Workgroups  [PDF]
Sílvia Silva, Adriana Araújo, Dário Costa, J. L. Meliá
Open Journal of Safety Science and Technology (OJSST) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ojsst.2013.34010
Abstract:

Studies of safety climate in construction revealed a significant positive association between safety climate and various aspects of occupational health and safety. The mechanisms through which this impact operates are still unclear and safety climate is usually studied without considering the complexity of this industry (companies, worksites and groups). The aim of this research is to analyze to what extend there are differences between construction sites and to explore the relations between construction sites’ safety climate and workers’ safety response and to examine how this influence occur considering the workgroups. The safety climate was evaluated using a reduced version of the questionnaire that is a part of Battery HERC (Herramienta para evaluacion riesgos comportamentales). The data were collected in a Portuguese construction company (5 construction sites; including sub-contractors) comprising 213 workers. Differences between construction sites safety climate were found, suggesting the prevalence of safety sub-climates. The workgroup safety climate played a determinant role on workers’ safety response in subcontracted workgroups and it is an important mechanism through which the principal contractor can influence subcontractors’ safety response. Designers of preven- tion and training programs for accidents prevention should include specific contents in order to improve supervisory safety leadership and workgroup safety responses.

Cameron, Lys Eiras;Araújo, Sílvia Teresa Carvalho de;
Revista da Escola de Enfermagem da USP , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0080-62342011000100013
Abstract: more than being a sense, vision is a powerful instrument that identifies and selects, hence everything depends on what one has seen before to determine how to interpret what is currently being seen. the objective of this article is to discuss the role that vision plays as an instrument for holistic and quality nursing care. this is a qualitative, exploratory study, using the sociopoetic method. the data was categorized as follows: (1)vision as an instrument and (2)outer body changes. in trauma and orthopedics, nurses should be able to provide patients with care in complex conditions and in an environment which changes fast. results show that vision is a powerful health care instrument in trauma and orthopedic nursing, promoting professional practice that is truly appropriate to the patients' needs.
Undergraduate students in orthopedic nursing care
Cameron, Lys Eiras;Araújo, Sílvia Teresa Carvalho de;
Revista Latino-Americana de Enfermagem , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-11692011000600016
Abstract: this study identifies some undergraduate nursing students’ imaginary manifestations concerning themselves and care delivered to patients with orthopedic and/or trauma disorders. the social poetics method was used and the research group was composed of 15 undergraduate students. only the categories and subcategories exclusively related to the “student” are presented in this paper. data revealed that care provided by orthopedic nursing students is the result of a care relationship that emerges from their sensitivity toward patients and their own knowledge, skills and attitudes. the orthopedic treatment, equipment and procedures, to which patients are submitted, cause important emotional distress for students, empathic behavior and encourage them to search for ways to minimize their patients’ pain. all the aspects that permeate care provided by orthopedic nursing students should be identified in order to enable reassessment of the teaching-learning process.

Synergies Chili , 2011,
Passos, Mahedy Araújo Bastos;Mendon?a, Maria Sílvia de;
Acta Amazonica , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0044-59672006000400005
Abstract: anatomic data on the epidermis leaf segments from mauritia flexuosa l. f. (arecaceae) are presented on three phases of development. leaf segments were analyzed on the all extension of leaf. both adaxial and abaxial epidermal cells stand out with sinuous walls, rectangular and longitudinally oriented to the foliar axis with the marked presence of spherical- spiny silica bodies. the back epidermal cells of both surfaces present straight walls and vary among short, long and round. trichomes are unicellular, simple, long, with a wider base. leaf segments from m. flexuosa are anphistomatic with tetracitic type stomats. in a cross-section the leaf skin is unistratified with a broad substimatic chamber. the findings obtained showed no significant variations among the three phases of development and the characters that were found appear to be common on other palm trees.
