Abstract: familial adenomatous polyposis (fap) is a rare syndrome characterized by the presence of hundreds to thousands of colorectal adenomas and is responsible for less than 1% of all colorectal cancers. the syndrome is also characterized by extra-colorectal features including amongst others upper gastrointestinal tract polyps and desmoid tumors. the syndrome is inherited by an autosomal dominant gene, the adenomatous polyposis coli (apc) gene. we present the physical history, clinical presentation, diagnosis and treatment of a patient with a novel germline apc mutation, the w421x mutation, which resulted in fap presenting with about a hundred colorectal polyps, gastric hyperplastic polyps and multiple aggressive intra-abdominal and extra-abdominal desmoid tumors.

Abstract: substernal goiter is usually defined as a goiter in which the thyroid mass has descended the plane of the thoracic inlet or if more than 50% of the thyroid mass is located below the thoracic inlet. substernal goiters may be asymptomatic or may present with symptoms caused by compression of adjacent organs. acute respiratory failure is rare in cases of substernal goiter. in cases of symptomatic substernal goiter the treatment is surgical by thyroidectomy. we present a rare case of a giant substernal nontoxic goiter which caused acute respiratory failure which was treated by urgent thyroidectomy through a t-incision.

Abstract: peutz-jeghers syndrome is a rare hereditary autosomal dominant disease caused by a mutation of the tumor suppressor gene serine/threonine kinase 11 located in chromosome 19p13.3. it is characterized by the presence of extensive mucocutaneous pigmentation, especially of the lips and the occurrence of hamartomatous polyps throughout the gastrointestinal tract. gastrointestinal hamartomas occur predominantly in the small intestine and can become symptomatic leading usually to intestinal obstruction and abdominal pain. we present a case of recurrent intestinal obstruction caused by small bowel intussusception treated by reduction, enterotomy and polypectomy and followed by intraoperative enteroscopy and endoscopic polypectomy.

Abstract: Scalar condensation, the well-established Higgs phenomenon, is the standard paradigm for building up renormalizable gauge-invariant theories of massive gauge bosons. In this short note, we demonstrate the uniqueness of the Higgs vacuum state under the possible presence of fermion condensates in a renormalizable U(1) model. In the same context, we explain why spontaneous spin-statistics violation is technically not admitted in conventional Quantum Field Theory.

Abstract: In view of the recent and future electroweak precision data accumulated at LEP and SLC, we systematically analyze possible new physics effects that may occur in the leptonic sector within the context of $SU(2)_R \times SU(2)_L \times U(1)_{B-L}$ theories. It is shown that nonobservation of flavour-violating $Z$-boson decays, lepton universality in the decays $Z\to l\bar{l}$, and universality of lepton asymmetries at the $Z$ peak form a set of complementary observables, yielding severe constraints on the parameter space of these theories. Contributions of new-physics effects to $R_b=\Gamma(Z\to b\bar{b})/\Gamma(Z\to \mbox{hadrons})$ are found to give interesting mass relations for the flavour-changing Higgs scalars present in these models.
Resonant CP-Violating Scalar--Pseudoscalar Transitions at mu+ mu- Colliders

Abstract: A mu+ mu- collider is an appealing machine to probe resonant CP-violating transitions of a CP-even Higgs particle into the Z boson or into another CP-odd Higgs scalar. These phenomena are studied within a manifestly gauge-invariant approach implemented by the pinch technique. The CP invariance of an extended Higgs sector motivated by supersymmetric E_6 models is assumed to be broken radiatively by the presence of heavy Majorana fermions. CP violation originating from Higgs-Z mixing is found to be very modest, whereas CP-number violating transitions involving Higgs scalars only can be resonantly enhanced up to order of unity.
Mixing and CP Violation: Status and Prospects

Abstract: Brief overview of the present status on mixing and CP violation in kaons and B mesons is given by means of the unitarity triangle. Theoretical predictions on epsilon'/epsilon are confronted with experimental results. The prospects of detecting CP violation at high-energy p pbar, p p, e- e+ and mu- mu+ colliders are discussed in resonant scatterings involving top quarks and/or heavy scalars. The relevance of the latter for baryogenesis is briefly outlined.
Radiatively Induced Neutrino Masses and Large Higgs-Neutrino Couplings in the Standard Model with Majorana Fields

Abstract: The Higgs sector of the Standard Model with one right-handed neutrino per family is systematically analyzed. In a model with intergenerational independent mixings between families, we can account for very light neutrinos acquiring Majorana masses radiatively at the first electroweak loop level. We also find that in such a scenario the Higgs coupling to the light-heavy neutrinos and to the heavy-heavy ones may be remarkably enhanced with significant implications for the production of these heavy neutrinos at high energy colliders.
