Taxonomy and Polyphasic Characterization of Alkaline Amylase Producing Marine Actinomycete Streptomyces rochei BTSS 1001

Abstract: Actinomycetes isolated from marine sediments along the southeast coast of Bay of Bengal were investigated for amylolytic activity. Marine actinomycete BTSS 1001 producing an alkaline amylase was identified from marine sediment of Diviseema coast, Bay of Bengal. The isolate produced alkaline amylase with maximum amylolytic activity at pH 9.5 at 50°C. The organism produced white to pale grey substrate mycelium and grayish aerial mycelium with pinkish brown pigmentation. A comprehensive study of morphological, physiological parameters, cultural characteristics, and biochemical studies was performed. The presence of iso-C15?:?0, anteiso-C15?:?0, iso-C16?:?0, and anteiso-C17?:?0 as the major cellular fatty acids, LL-diaminopimelic acid as the characteristic cell wall component, and menaquinones MK-9H(6) and MK-9H(8) as the major isoprenoid quinones is attributed to the strain BTSS 1001 belonging to the genus Streptomyces. Comparison of 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain BTSS 1001 exhibited the highest similarities to the type strains of Streptomyces rochei (99%), Streptomyces plicatus (99%), and Streptomyces enissocaesilis (99%). Using the polyphasic taxonomical approach and phenotypic characteristic studies, the isolate BTSS 1001 was characterized as marine actinomycete Streptomyces rochei. 1. Introduction Actinomycetes have long been reported as important source of biotechnologically important compounds. The recent focus is on marine Actinomycetes as a source of bioactive compounds and industrial enzymes. This is due to the fact that terrestrial actinomycetes have been exhaustively analyzed for bioactive compounds and enzymes but they still fall short of industrial application. Thus, the need of the hour is to identify newer sources capable of withstanding the conditions of industrial and commercial applications. Studies by several researchers [1–4] on marine actinomycetes have reported diversity and presence of unique marine taxa in ocean sediments. Their survival in extreme conditions in the ocean sediments demonstrates their ability for adaptation and production of different types of bioactive compounds as compared to their terrestrial counterparts [5]. Marine actinomycetes have been established as a rich source of several secondary metabolites such as novel bioactive molecules like antibiotics, antifungal, and anticancer compounds, plant growth hormones, industrially important enzymes, enzyme inhibitors, and pigments [6, 7]. Abstract: Using household-level data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, we estimate the extent to which medical expenses are responsible for driving households to bankruptcy. Our results suggest that an increase of 10 percent in medical debts would cause a 27 percent increase in the filing propensity of households with primarily medical debt, and an approximately 36 percent increase in filing propensity of households where medical debts co-exist with primarily credit card debts. Studying the post-bankruptcy scenario, we find that filers are 19 percent less likely to own a home even several years after the filing, compared to non-filers. However, the consequences are less adverse for medical filers i.e. those who filed due to high medical bills compared to other filers.

Abstract: The development of unconventional gas exploration in the USA, in particular shale gas, caused a revolution in the American and the global gas markets. The regional-wide use of unconventional gas resources could stabilize the natural gas demand and the energy supply security of European and Asian countries. But traditionally, almost all gas contracts in Europe and Asia are linked to oil because of the demand for stable, long-term contracts. Furthermore, in many Asian countries, large state-owned enterprises dominate their national gas markets, leading to little competition and incentives to reduce gas prices. In Europe, the expansion of unconventional gas is facing grassroots opposition from environmental groups who are concerned about ground water safety, adequate waste water management, seismic events and greenhouse gas emissions. In this article, I will discuss the rapidly changing natural gas markets and the role and prospects of unconventional gas as well as its environmental impacts and unsustainability in industry level.

Abstract: Mahatma Gandhi was mindful of the poor position of Indian rural people at that time and he dreamt of a cleaner India, where he emphasized on cleanliness and sanitation as an intact function of surviving. President Pranab Mukherjee in his address to Parliament in June 2014, said, “For ensuring hygiene, waste management and sanitation across the nation a “Swachh Bharat Mission” will be established. This will be our tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his 150th birth anniversary to be celebrated in the year 2019”. The Narendra Modi Government will shortly establish the “Swachh Bharat” movement to solve the sanitation problem in India, to solve the problem of waste management and make India a clean state, ensuring hygiene all across the nation. Emphasizing “Clean India” on August 15, 2014 in his Independence Day speech, the Prime Minister said that this trend is linked with the economic activity of the state. This missionary work for creating a clean India will be launched on October 2, 2014, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi with the objective of completing the mission in 2019, the 150th birth anniversary of the father of the country.

Abstract: Auxin and cytokinin interaction plays an essential role in a wide range of plant growth and developmental processes. The interaction consequence of the two hormones is highly tissue specific. The molecular mechanisms underlying the tissue specificity are largely unknown. Here we show that the cytokinin signaling pathway key components ARR5 and ARR6 respond to auxin with a highly tissue specific and contrasted pattern in Arabidopsis seedlings and calli in the presence of cytokinin. Our results suggest that the two highly homologous but functionally distinct genes, ARR5 and ARR6, play a critical role in mediating tissue specific interaction between auxin and cytokinin.

Abstract: This paper presents keystroke dynamics based authentication system using the information set concept. Two types of membership functions (MFs) are computed: one based on the timing features of all the samples and another based on the timing features of a single sample. These MFs lead to two types of information components (spatial and temporal) which are concatenated and modified to produce different feature types. Two Component Information Set (TCIS) is proposed for keystroke dynamics based user authentication. The keystroke features are converted into TCIS features which are then classified by SVM, Random Forest and proposed Convex Entropy Based Hanman Classifier. The TCIS features are capable of representing the spatial and temporal uncertainties. The performance of the proposed features is tested on CMU benchmark dataset in terms of error rates (FAR, FRR, EER) and accuracy of the features. In addition, the proposed features are also tested on Android Touch screen based Mobile Keystroke Dataset. The TCIS features improve the performance and give lower error rates and better accuracy than that of the existing features in literature.

Abstract:
One of the classical approaches in the analysis of a variational inequality problem is to transform it into an equivalent optimization problem via the notion of gap function. The gap functions are useful tools in deriving the error bounds which provide an estimated distance between a specific point and the exact solution of variational inequality problem. In this paper, we follow a similar approach for set-valued vector quasi variational inequality problems and define the gap functions based on scalarization scheme as well as the one with no scalar parameter. The error bounds results are obtained under fixed point symmetric and locally α-Holder assumptions on the set-valued map describing the domain of solution space of a set-valued vector quasi variational inequality problem.

Abstract: This paper presents the formulation of the possibilistic Renyi entropy function from the Renyi entropy function using the framework of Hanman-Anirban entropy function. The new entropy function is used to derive the information set features from keystroke dynamics for the authentication of users. A new composite fuzzy classifier is also proposed based on Mamta-Hanman entropy function and applied on the Information Set based features. A comparison of the results of the proposed approach with those of Support Vector Machine and Random Forest classifier shows that the new classifier outperforms the other two.

Abstract: Modelling exchange rate volatility is crucially important because of its diverse implications on the profitability of corporations and decisions of policy makers. This paper empirically investigates exchange rate volatility of India’s currency by applying rolling symmetric and asymmetric GARCH models to the USDINR and EURINR daily exchange rates for a period spanning April 1, 2006 through January 31, 2018, resulting in total observations of 2861. To estimate GARCH (1,1) and EGARCH (1,1) models, the data window is rolled over five years with nearly 1200 observations and one month is used as forecast period for each window. Both, in-sample criteria like the log likelihood criteria, Akaike information criterion (AIC), the Bayesian information criterion (SIC) and Hannan Quinn criterion (HQC) as well as the out-of-sample criteria like Mean Squared Error (MSE) and Mean Absolute Error (MAE) have been used to test model fit and forecast accuracy of the models. To test the robustness of the findings, Diebold-Mariano test is used to compare the predictive accuracy of both the models. Further, the forecasting accuracy of the two models has also been tested by splitting the sample period into periods of tranquility and volatility in Indian exchange rate. Results show that GARCH (1,1) model with generalized error distribution is adequate to capture the mean and volatility process of USDINR and EURINR exchange rate returns.
Granulometric Analysis of Rajmahal Inter-Trappen Sedimentary Rocks (Early Cretaceous), Eastern India, Implications for Depositional History  [PDF]

Abstract: Rajmahal trap along with its Inter-trappean sedimentary rocks is found exposed in the eastern part of India (24°00'E - 25°15'N; 87°20'E - 87°15'E). Ten representative samples of Inter-trappean sandstone selected from the study area have been subjected to granulometric analysis. The result of the grain size analysis indicates that these sandstone specimens are very fine to fine grained with unimodal grain size distribution. They are dominantly fine skewed and generally mesokurtic in nature. The linear discriminant function plots of various grain size parameters suggest that these sandstones appear to have been deposited either in shallow marine or lacustrine environment. On multigroup multivariate discriminant functions V1 - V2 diagram majority of the samples fall in the beach depositional environment, indicating that most of the sediments were reworked by wave processes before deposition. The C-M pattern diagram shows that the sediment deposition took place in beach environment by rolling or suspension of sediments; hence the clastics were deposited in low energy condition.
