Mutagenicidade e antimutagenicidade dos principais corantes para alimentos
ANTUNES, Lusania Maria Greggi;ARAúJO, Maria Cristina Paiva;
Revista de Nutri??o , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S1415-52732000000200002
Abstract: many compounds present in foods, whether natural or added or produced during processing, have already been tested for mutagenicity or antimutagenicity in different experimental systems. the great number of food colorings available, both natural and synthetic, has led researchers to assess the mutagenicity and/or antimutagenicity of these compounds. some synthetic colorings have mutagenic potential and their use has been forbidden in some countries. many natural colorings tested have antimutagenic potential in at least one test system, but this does not mean that natural dyes are innocuous. the natural coloring curcumin, for example, showed antimutagenic potential in in vivo tests but was mutagenic in in vitro tests. this paradox emphasizes the importance of careful assessment and wide investigation into the possible mutagenic and/or antimutagenic activity of food colorings.
Mutagenicidade e antimutagenicidade dos principais corantes para alimentos
ANTUNES Lusania Maria Greggi,ARAúJO Maria Cristina Paiva

Abstract: purpose: to identify the prevalence of the vocal dysfunction which caused medical leave among high school teachers from the "state education system". methods: a survey was conducted analyzing school teachers' medical reports who were licensed for medical leave in 2005 and 2006 which were registered in the "central superintendence of medical expert reports and occupational health of the state of rio de janeiro". from 554 school working teachers in the above-mentioned period, 130 medical reports were analyzed and on a leave because of several vocal dysfunctions diagnostics, trying to identify the medical leaves arising from vocal dysfunction. results: it was clear that despite of the high prevalence rate of the negative vocal sign symptoms among school teachers, just 6.9% were on a leave due to vocal dysfunction. the results also allow for reflections on the relation amongst voice, body, breathing and emotion in the teaching world. conclusion: it may be concluded that even when dysphonia usually a problem in the educational work, we know very little on official data concerning teachers who are licensed for medical leave. more research is required for the ones who are responsible for policy decisions, to be aware and sensible to the importance of the issue, for the country, in social and economics terms. we emphasize the need for speech therapist work development among school teachers to be a multidisciplinary job, with prevention programs and policies that are very important to implement and also to promote vocal health programs that may be offered to school teachers.

Agricultural Sciences (AS) , 2017, DOI: 10.4236/as.2017.87048
Abstract:
The flavonoid content in orange peels of different Brazilian citrus varieties such as bahia, lima, lima-of-persian, morcote, pera, ponkan, seleta, cravo, kinkan and pomelo was assessed. Industry processing juice wastes such as bagasse, bagasse residues, animal feeding bagasse, pulp WEUE and CORE-wash were also analyzed. The HPLC analysis indicates that the most abundant flavonoids found in these Brazilian citrus peels are hesperidin and naringin. The solvents used are selective for flavonoid extraction, and depending on their polarity, glycoside or aglycone flavonoids are extracted. The use of multivariate analysis shows that DMSO is the best solvent to extract glycosides flavanones while hexane displays high selectivity in the extraction of polymethoxylated flavones. The flavonoids present in the orange wastes, obtained at different stages of the industrial processing, are qualitative and quantitatively different. The identification and quantification of the flavonoid composition in each Brazilian citrus variety were evaluated and allowed the selection of the best solvent for the extraction of each specific class of flavonoids. These compounds were found to be more abundant in the fruit peels than in their juices, revealing their great industrial potential. The residual portion of the processing juices is also rich in flavonoids, depending on the processing step.
Effects of H2O2, Fe2+ and Fe3+ on curcumin-induced chromosomal aberrations in CHO cells
Antunes, Lusania Maria Greggi;Araújo, Maria Cristina Paiva;Dias, Francisca da Luz;Takahashi, Catarina Satie;
Genetics and Molecular Biology , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S1415-47572005000100028
Abstract: the effects of h2o2, fe2+ and fe3+ on curcumin-induced clastogenicity were evaluated in cho cells. curcumin combined with h2o2 did not increase the chromosomal aberrations more than expected based on a simple additive effect. in contrast, the combination of curcumin-fe significantly decreased the total number of chromosomal aberrations and the number of abnormal metaphases. the clastogenicity of curcumin may be related to its pro-oxidant properties and its ability to generate free radicals.
In vivo cytogenetic effects of multiple doses of dietary vegetable oils
Evangelista, Cristina Márcia Wolf;Antunes, Lusania Maria Greggi;Bianchi, Maria de Lourdes Pires;

Abstract: polyphenols are potent antioxidants that are particularly abundant in the mediterranean diet, with olive oil being the main fat source. a number of investigations have reported that phenolic compounds found in dietary oils are antioxidants and could provide protective effects by inhibiting dna oxidative damage. however, few studies have been published on the biological activity of vegetable oils, including their possible mutagenic/antimutagenic effects. the objective of the current study was to investigate the cytogenetic effects of multiple doses of four vegetable oils in rat bone marrow cells and to examine the possible antimutagenic effects of these oils in chromosomal damage induced by the antitumor drug cisplatin. these oils are consumed by humans and commonly used as drug vehicles. the rats received treatment with multiple doses of canola oil, olive oil, virgin olive oil, and corn oil (5 ml kg-1) alone or combined with the antitumor drug cisplatin (5 mg kg-1). treatments with vegetable oils alone did not increase the percentage of cells with chromosomal aberrations (p > 0.05). olive, virgin olive and canola oils showed protective effects against cisplatin-induced chromosomal damage (p < 0.05). a rational mechanism for the protective effects of vegetable oils is that their phenolic compounds have antioxidant and antimutagenic properties in vivo.
Deciphering the contribution of lipid droplets in leprosy: multifunctional organelles with roles in Mycobacterium leprae pathogenesis
Mattos, Katherine Antunes de;Sarno, Euzenir Nunes;Pessolani, Maria Cristina Vidal;Bozza, Patricia T;
Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02762012000900023
Abstract: leprosy is an infectious disease caused by mycobacterium leprae that affects the skin and nerves, presenting a singular clinical picture. across the leprosy spectrum, lepromatous leprosy (ll) exhibits a classical hallmark: the presence of a collection of m. leprae-infected foamy macrophages/schwann cells characterised by their high lipid content. the significance of this foamy aspect in mycobacterial infections has garnered renewed attention in leprosy due to the recent observation that the foamy aspect represents cells enriched in lipid droplets (ld) (also known as lipid bodies). here, we discuss the contemporary view of ld as highly regulated organelles with key functions in m. leprae persistence in the ll end of the spectrum. the modern methods of studying this ancient disease have contributed to recent findings that describe m. leprae-triggered ld biogenesis and recruitment as effective mycobacterial intracellular strategies for acquiring lipids, sheltering and/or dampening the immune response and favouring bacterial survival, likely representing a fundamental aspect of m. leprae pathogenesis. the multifaceted functions attributed to the ld in leprosy may contribute to the development of new strategies for adjunctive anti-leprosy therapies.

Abstract: the epidemiological profile of the populations has changed throughout history and populace spaces. throughout the years, epidemiologists have studied the changes in the epidemiological profiles of the populations, employing, according to the given health figures, the health of the populations, using specially the mortality data of the information systems in the entire country. aiming to identify the mortality situation as per sex, age, cause groups and specific death causes in the municipality of camaragibe, from 1999 to 2003, a descriptive study has been used taking into account the variables presented at sim (sistema de mortalidade). moreover, using the rpa's as analysis units, a description of the mortality situation was performed taking into consideration the intra-urban differentials. the mortality behavior presented variations in relation to rpa of residence, albeit, for some indicators, these differentials were not so clear. the findings suggest that the mortality differentials were polarized in the municipality regions, and a further analysis using a more spaced out unit may be needed.
