Perspectives in Oral Sciences , 2010,
Abstract: Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of different calibration endodontic rulers used for calibration of gutta-percha cones. Methods: Three hundred and sixty gutta-percha cones were calibrated by three different calibration endodontic rulers ( ngelus , Prisma and Maillefer ) in the holes #25, #30, #35, #40, #45 and #50. The diameter of the calibrated end of each cone was measured by two examiners using a digital caliper. Data were organized into a table and statistically analyzed with ANOVA and Bonferroni test with a significance level of 5%. Results: The bestcalibration results were obtained by Prisma (0.023 mm ± 0.002 mm), while the others presented the worst results of calibration with no statistical difference between them: ngelus (0.028 mm ± 0.002 mm) and Maillefer (0.030 mm ± 0.002 mm). Conclusion: It can be concluded that the rule Prisma had on average a higher result in the standardization of gutta-percha cones, followed by ngelus and Maillefer .

Pipeline is a conventional, efficient and economic way for oil transportations. The use of a good system for detecting and locating leaks in pipeline contribute significantly to operational safety and cost saving in petroleum industry. This paper aims to study the heavy oil-water flow in vertical ducts including leakage. A transient numerical analysis, using the ANSYS-CFX? 11.0 commercial software is performed. The mathematical modeling considers the effect of drag and gravitational forces between the phases and turbulent flow. Mass flow rate of the phases in the leaking orifice, the pressure drop as a function of the time and the velocity distributions are presented and discussed. We can conclude that volumetric fraction of phases and fluid mixture velocity affect pressure drop and mass flow rate at the leak hole.

The Property of Portland Cement and its Employment in Dentistry: Review of the Literature

Pesquisa Brasileira em Odontopediatria e Clínica Integrada , 2007,
Abstract: Objective: The aim of the present study was to investigate the performance of the Portland cement when used as material in the dentistry. Methods: It was accomplished a bibliographical research using scientific goods published in national and international literature, which intended to evaluate the physical properties, chemical and biological behavior, as well as the antimicrobial activity of this product. In the selected article, the authors used methods of investigation in vitro and in vivo for study comparing the cement with materials consecrated in dentistry. Conclusion: In agreement with the consulted bibliography it was possible to ensure the similarity in the chemical composition between the Portland cement and the MTA, in the effectiveness of the sealing ability of the roads areas between the root canal and the periodontal tissue, satisfactory antimicrobial action, and demonstrate favorable biological properties, stimulating the deposition of the cement and inducing the reparative pulpar answer.

Abstract: background: percutaneous coronary intervention (pci) has become one of the most commonly performed cardiac procedures in clinical practice. due to improvement in outcomes, reduced acute complication rates, the need to reduce costs and the limited availability of hospital beds, elective pci with same-day discharge has become an interesting option. methods: single-center registry with a retrospective evaluation of all patients undergoing elective pci who were discharged on the same day, from january 2009 to march 2012. the rates of major adverse cardiac events (death, myocardial infarction, target-vessel revascularization and stroke), in addition to stent thrombosis, vascular complications and re-hospitalization between hospital discharge and the first 30 days of follow-up were determined. results: sixty-nine patients were evaluated with mean age of 64.5 ± 11.2 years, most of them were male (82%), and 28% were diabetics. all patients had stable coronary artery disease and type a or b1 lesions (36% and 36% respectively). radial access was the most commonly used approach (89%), with 5 f introducer sheaths in 56% and 6 f in the remaining patients. procedure success was obtained in 98.5%. no clinical events were observed at the 30-day follow-up. conclusions: our results demonstrated that same-day discharge was safe for patients with low clinical and angiographic risk undergoing elective pci with no procedure-related complications.
A paridade do poder de compra: existe um quebra-cabe?a?
Barbosa, Fernando de Holanda;
Estudos Econ?micos (S?o Paulo) , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-41612009000300001
Abstract: this paper shows that the purchasing power parity puzzle is a statistical artifact produced by the fact that the long run equilibrium real exchange rate is not constant, but changes throughout time. this fact implies that the inertia coefficient has an upward bias.

Abstract: the price of money, as the price of any financial asset, can be determined through asset pricing theory. based on this approach, this paper presents a concise survey of the following topics of monetary theory: i) price of money: bubbles versus fundamentals; ii) multiple equilibria; iii) price level indeterminacy; iv) optimum quantity of money; v) hyperinflation; vi) currency substitution, and vii) price of money rigidity.
The contagion effect of public debt on monetary policy: the Brazilian experience
Barbosa, Fernando de Holanda;
Revista de Economia Política , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-31572006000200004
Abstract: this paper attempts to explain why the brazilian inter-bank interest rate is so high compared with rates practiced by other emerging economies. the interplay between the markets for bank reserves and government securities feeds into the inter-bank rate the risk premium of the brazilian public debt.

Barbosa, Fernando de Holanda;
Revista de Economia Política , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-31572008000100005
Abstract: banco nacional: ponzi game, proer and fcvs. this paper analyses the causes of the failure of banco nacional and the resolution method adopted by the brazilian central bank. the program (proer) designed by the central bank and its legal framework allowed the failed bank to buy " defaulted securities" , financed by the central bank, and to use them as borrowing collateral. the paper also analyses the private and social costs of this bank failure.

Abstract: objective: to evaluate the oxidative stress and inflammatory markers in obese patients before and after roux-en-y vertical banded gastroplasty. methods: we studied 20 class iii obese patients undergoing roux-en-y vertical banded gastroplasty, seven men and 13 women, mean age 39 years, and 20 non-obese subjects, nine males and 11 females, mean age 38 years. we determined the plasma levels of malondialdehyde, stress an index, total antioxidant capacity, catalase, reduced and oxidized glutathione and inflammatory markers (c reactive protein and á-1 acid glycoprotein). in the obese group, these parameters were determined before and 2, 6 and 12 months after gastroplasty. results: preoperatively, the obese group showed elevated levels of inflammatory markers of oxidative stress (malondialdehyde levels and stress index) and lower levels of indicators of antioxidant defense compared to the control group. weight loss was accompanied by gradual reduction in the levels of malondialdehyde and stress index. we found an increased concentration of reduced glutathione and total antioxidant status and reduced levels of inflammatory markers. conclusion: weight loss improves the inflammatory state and oxidative stress levels.
