Journal of Biomaterials and Nanobiotechnology (JBNB) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/jbnb.2014.54025
Abstract: The term Diabetes Mellitus (DM) comprises a group of metabolic disorders characterized by chronic hyperglycemia resulting from defects in the secretion and/or action of insulin. The Insulin therapy constitutes the preferred treatment for DM, consisting of daily subcutaneous insulin injections to control blood glucose levels. The chitosan studied for Biomedicine is a biomaterial that can be used for controlled release of drugs whose release rate can be controlled by Sodium Tripolyphosphate (TPP), which is an ionic cross linker of the chitosan. Present study, therefore, was aimed to develop and evaluate membranes of chitosan and chitosan cross linked by TPP for use in controlled release of insulin system, with the purpose of obtaining an alternative to the injectable administration of this drug. The developed membranes were characterized by the techniques of Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX), High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and Evaluation of Cell Viability of Macrophages (MTT). With the FTIR technique the interaction between chitosan, tripolyphosphate and insulin was identified. Chemical elements present in chitosan, insulin and sodium tripolyphosphate membranes were detected by EDX technique. By SEM technique, the changes in the morphology of the membrane containing insulin, with the presence of granular particles of varying sizes, could be observed when compared to pure chitosan. With HPLC assay insulin was identified and it was shown that it gets separated from chitosan membrane even when the membrane was cross linked by the TPP, though at a reduced rate. The crosslinking agent was effective to control the rate of insulin release. The biocompatibility of the prepared membranes was confirmed by cell viability of macrophages using the MTT assay. The developed membranes, therefore, have potential for use as a biomaterial in controlled release systems for insulin.

Acta Scientiarum : Animal Sciences , 2010,
Abstract: Current experiment was undertaken during 6 weeks with Nile tilapia,Oreochomis niloticus, fingerlings (1.28 . 0.03 g) to assess the effects of moderate Na2CO3 liming on water quality and fish growth performance. Twenty-four 25 L-aquaria, with 15 fish per aquarium, were used, of which twelve aquaria were placed in the lab’s indoor room and twelve in the outdoor area. Two types of water (clear or green) and three different water-quality managements (none, HCl acidification and Na2CO3 liming) were simultaneously evaluated in a 3 x 2 factorial design. Total ammonia, calcium hardness, pH and total alkalinity in the green water aquaria were significantly higher than rates in the clear water aquaria. Slight liming acid water with Na2CO3 did not produce any significant effect on its water calcium hardness. No significant differences between controls and theexperimental group were observed for any growth variables. Lime rearing water with Na2CO3 has no significant effect on tilapia growth performance if the initial total alkalinity of water is higher than 20 mg CaCO3 L-1.

Abstract: the effect of the bovine major histocompatibility complex (bola) locus on animal health may be due to a direct action of its alleles on immune functions, whereas its indirect effect on production traits might be explained by the better general health conditions of more productive animals. in the present study, the bola-drb3 gene was investigated in 1058 cows belonging to seven brazilian gyr dairy herds (bos indicus, zebu cattle). a total of 37 alleles were identified, 15 of them described for the first time in a zebu breed. a highly significant association (p < 0.02) was observed between allele *54 and a decrease (-26.1 kg) in milk protein yield and there was a significant association (p < 0.05) between this allele and lower (-26.07 kg) milk fat yield. there was also a significant association (p < 0.05) between allele *6 and decreased (-12.47 kg) milk protein and allele *7 and increased (12.72 kg) milk protein. there were also indications of association (p < 0.10) between somatic cell score (scs) and alleles *3 (scs increased by 0.54 units) and *31 (scs increased by 0.46 units). the highly significant association of allele *54 with lower protein yield suggests the possible use of this allele in marker-assisted selection programs.

Abstract: blends of citric acid-modified thermoplastic starch (tps) and low density polyethylene (ldpe) were prepared by reactive extrusion (rex) and characterized by scanning electron microscopy (sem) of the fragile fracture surfaces, fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (ftir), water absorption in 53% relative humidity environment and by x-ray diffraction. the modified tps was prepared by the reactive extrusion of a mixture of corn starch, citric acid and glycerol (30%). tps-ldpe blends were then prepared by the processing of tps and pebd both in pellets in a single screw extruder. it was observed an important compatibilization effect, attributed to the reduction of tps melt viscosity and consequently the reduction of the interfacial tension between tps and pebd phases. the ftir spectra showed shifting of starch bands confirming the compatibilization effect of citric acid. important change on blend morphology as function of the tps modification were observed, in particular for the blends prepared with the addition of 1,0 - 1,5% ac which showed a more homogeneous and finer dispersed phase.

The objective of this work is to reveal and evaluate the evolution of the shoe industry LPAs of Vale do Sinos (RS), Franca (SP), Birigui (SP) and Nova Serrana (MG) over the period between 1995 and 2006. A survey of literature referring to the main productive arrangements of that sector was conducted and secondary data from RAIS/MTE was used. The results demonstrated growing and positive variations on the number of companies and workers of these arrangements, as well on their proportion in relation to the shoe industry in the respective states and in Brazil. Those that presented higher increase in participation in relation to the national shoe industry were notably the poles of Vale do Sinos and Franca, followed by Nova Serrana, whereas Birigui presented small reduction. This fact leads us to believe that the organization in the format of local productive arrangements is generating positive effects to development of the shoe industry in these regions.

Abstract:

Pipeline is a conventional, efficient and economic way for oil transportations. The use of a good system for detecting and locating leaks in pipeline contribute significantly to operational safety and cost saving in petroleum industry. This paper aims to study the heavy oil-water flow in vertical ducts including leakage. A transient numerical analysis, using the ANSYS-CFX? 11.0 commercial software is performed. The mathematical modeling considers the effect of drag and gravitational forces between the phases and turbulent flow. Mass flow rate of the phases in the leaking orifice, the pressure drop as a function of the time and the velocity distributions are presented and discussed. We can conclude that volumetric fraction of phases and fluid mixture velocity affect pressure drop and mass flow rate at the leak hole.
