Abstract: the objective of this work was to get information about the genetic control of the grain yield under heat stress conditions, the tolerance of cultivar and the identification of promising segregation populations for selections of lines adapted to the conditions of the central region of brazil. thirteen parents and 40 populations in f1 and f2 generations derived by partial diallel crosses were evaluated. the experiments were conducted under field conditions in lavras and patos de minas, mg, brazil, sowing the seeds in the summertime (february) and in the winter (may). there was difference of heat tolerance among parents and hybrid populations for grain yield character, and both additive and non-additive effects were important in the genetic control of grain yield character in the presence or absence of heat. in spite of the occurrence of populations x sowing time interactions, the high repeatability of the effects of the general combining ability suggests the possibility of the selection in the summertime and winter facilitating to advance the breeding programs in the region.

Souza, Simone de;Carvalho Neto, Antonio;
Cadernos EBAPE.BR , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1679-39512009000200007
Abstract: this article aims to discuss the influence of the brazilian siderurgic sector restructuring during the 1990s on local development. social sciences agenda have discussed the influence of these processes on production structures and on local employment level. facing this challenge, local power is assuming a series of public policies to atract private investment. the theorethical framework is based on the new regionalism theory, a relatively rare approach on literature. the research which originated this case study was developed in a region named steel valley, minas gerais department, brazil. it analyses the influence of a siderurgic corporation restructuring on local labour market and local stakeholders role to articulate coalitions to promote development. results show industrial sector decline in contradiction with services and commerce sectors growing. the cooperation network among local stakeholders is still limited in order to stimulate local economic growing.
Family number in common bean selection
Ferreira, Wilton Duarte;Ramalho, Magno Antonio Patto;Ferreira, Daniel Furtado;Souza, Moacil Alves de;
Genetics and Molecular Biology , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S1415-47572000000200028
Abstract: the objective of the present study was to determine the number of families necessary for selection in a segregant population. nine segregant populations from the bean improvement program of the federal university of lavras were evaluated. the number of families varied from 169 to 295, and the average family heritability estimate (h2) for grain production varied from 5.3 to 82.0%. different sample sizes were simulated using the average family performance. the first sample consisted of 30 families, with each additional sample containing 10 more families, until the total number of families evaluated was reached for each population. one thousand simulations per sample size were performed. these data were used to determine the average, minimum and maximum phenotypic variance and the standard error of the variance. the probability of occurrence of a certain level of phenotypic variance for the corresponding values of 0.0, 0.25, 0.50 and 0.75 of heritability was determined for all families, using a c2 distribution. based on the results obtained and considering the experimental precision and conditions of the bean improvement programs in this region, the use of less than 100 families would reduce the probability of successful selection.

Abstract: the objective of the present work was to study the adaptability and stability of single and double-crosses of maize originated from the same gene pool. ten commercial single-crosses and all possible double-crosses, obtained from a complete diallel, were evaluated. seeds of the double-crosses were obtained in an experimental area of the biology department at universidade federal de lavras (dbi/ufla). the experiments were conducted in 15 environments in the 2005/06 growing season, on farms and in experimental stations. the cultural practices were the ones normally used by farmers or experimental stations for maize. the entries were evaluated in randomized complete blocks design with three replications per environment. the trait under study was husked ears yield (kg ha-1), corrected to 13% of moisture content. nonparametric statistics were used to study hybrids adaptability and stability. the contribution of each hybrid to the genotype-by-environment interaction and the deviation in relation to the maximum performance in each environment was determined. the double-crosses were on average more stable, although some single-crosses were as stable as the double-crosses.

Abstract: the identification of the population with greatest potential for inbred line extraction is directly linked to the success of a maize hybrid breeding program. this study was carried out to identify procedures for selecting these populations. segregant s0, s1 populations and 196 s0:1 families were obtained from each of four commercial cultivars assessed: single hybrids (c 333b and z8392), double hybrid (ag 1051) and variety (br-105). the experiments were carried out during the 1998/99 season, in two locations in the southern region of minas gerais state, brazil: lavras and ijaci. a 14 x 14 simple lattice design was used in the assessment of the 196 s0:1 families from each population. a randomized complete blocks design with four replications experiment was also set up to assess, simultaneously, the f1, s0 and s1 generations. the husked ear yield (kg/plot) of the f1, s0 and s1 generations was obtained and the contribution of the homozygous locos (m + a) and heterozygous locos (d) were estimated. the genetic and phenotypic parameters were also estimated using the s0:1 family experiments. a high correlation (r = 0.81) between the (m + a) estimate and the s0:1 family mean was observed. the ag 1051 population showed the greatest potential for line extraction, i.e., greatest (m + a) value. the correlation between the d and h2 estimates was low, indicating that the estimate of the contribution of the heterozygous locos was not a good indicator of the potential variability of the population.

Abstract: the aim of this work was to evaluate the viability of using the augmented block designs and spatial analysis methods for early-stage selection in breeding programs for common bean (phaseolus vulgaris l.). a total of 121 s2 progenies were evaluated in three locations: lavras, lambari and patos de minas, brazil. a simple 11 x 11 lattice design was employed by location. additionally, two controls, carioca and emgopa 201-ouro, were included. the split plots were composed by two 2 m lines with 15 seeds/m. the data of the production (g/plot) were submitted to a variance analysis, considering the following strategies: lattice design, augmented block design, randomized complete block design, papadakis' method, moving means method, and check plots method. the comparison between the different strategies was done considering their efficiency in controlling the experimental error and in relation to the precision of the estimates of genetic and phenotypic parameters obtained in each method. general results indicate that augmented block design is useful in earlier stage of selection, when the intensities of selection are moderate to low; however, this design is not useful for estimation of genetic and phenotypic parameters due to lower precision of estimates; the use of check plots method did not improve the experimental precision; the nearest neighbour, papadakis and moving means methods were efficient in removing the heterogeneity within blocks; this efficiency was equivalent to lattice analysis for estimation of genetic and phenotypic parameters.

Abstract: general and specific combining ability effects are important indicators in a maize (zea mays l.) breeding program aiming hybrid development. the objectives of the present study were to estimate the general (gca) and specific combining abilities (sca) effects of commercial maize hybrids using a complete diallel scheme and to assess the stabilities of these estimates. fifty-five entries were assessed; ten commercial single-crosses and all possible double-crosses. the experiments were carried out in 12 environments in the 2005/06 growing season. a randomized complete block design was used with three replications per environment. ear yield was evaluated, corrected to 13% of moisture content. the combined diallel analysis involving all environments was performed and the stability of general and specific combining ability effects was investigated. the underlying nonparametric statistics evaluated the contribution of each effect to the genotype by environment interaction. non-additive effects were more important for this set of hybrids than the additive effects. it was possible to select parents with high stability for combining ability and with high gca.
