Gerokomos , 2012,
Objetive is to describe the clinical and dependency characteristics of a group of institutionalised elderly persons suffering from mental diseases, in order to determine the feasibility of their integration into local residential homes. A descriptive, transversal and quantitative study conducted at the Centro Psiquiátrico de Rehabilitación de Sádaba (Psychiatric Rehabilitation Centre of Sádaba) with people aged 65 years or over. Data was collected through medical records, interviews which assessed the current behaviour of the person, the Barthel Index, and the Evolution Scales HoNOS and Chronicity. According to this study, there is a clinical and performance profile in ADL that allows for patients with serious and chronic mental illness to be referred to standard resources within the local community.
Intravenous Thrombolytic Treatment in the Oldest Old

Stroke Research and Treatment , 2012, DOI: 10.1155/2012/923676
Abstract: Background and Purpose. Intravenous thrombolysis using tissue plasminogen activator is safe and probably effective in patients >80 years old. Nevertheless, its safety has not been specifically addressed for the oldest old patients (≥85 years old, OO). We assessed the safety and effectiveness of thrombolysis in this group of age. Methods. A prospective registry of patients treated with intravenous thrombolysis. Patients were divided in two groups (<85 years and the OO). Demographic data, stroke aetiology and baseline National Institute Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score were recorded. The primary outcome measures were the percentage of symptomatic intracranial haemorrhage (SICH) and functional outcome at 3 months (modified Rankin Scale, mRS). Results. A total of 1,505 patients were registered. 106 patients were OO [median 88, range 85–101]. Female sex, hypertension, elevated blood pressure at admission, cardioembolic strokes and higher basal NIHSS score were more frequent in the OO. SICH transformation rates were similar (3.1% versus 3.7%, ). The probability of independence at 3 months (mRS 0–2) was lower in the OO (40.2% versus 58.7%, ) but not after adjustment for confounding factors (adjusted OR, 0.82; 95% CI, 0.50 to 1.37; ). Three-month mortality was higher in the OO (28.0% versus 11.5%, ). Conclusion. Intravenous thrombolysis for stroke in OO patients did not increase the risk of SICH although mortality was higher in this group. 1. Introduction Later years of life are marked by increased vulnerability to some events, such as stroke. The incidence of stroke increases exponentially with age. Different epidemiological studies have shown a rapid increase in the incidence of stroke, with that rate doubling each consecutive decade after 55 years of age and with stroke occurring in more than half of people over 75 years old [1]. People 85 years old or older, often known as the oldest old (OO) [2, 3], are the fastest growing segment of the older American population [4]. By 2050, it is estimated that there will be more than 55 million nonagenarians worldwide [5], and very old patients will likely constitute the majority of stroke victims [6–8]. The Oxford Vascular Study indicated a 12-fold increase in the incidence of stroke in the OO, compared with the younger population [9]. The OO also have higher mortality, morbidity, disability, and greater functional impairment compared with younger patients [10–12]. Intravenous thrombolytic treatment with recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (IV-tPA) is the only medical therapy currently available for acute
Information and communication technologies in university teaching: Implications in European higher education space
Ana García-Valcárcel Mu?oz-Repiso, Francisco Javier Tejedor Tejedor
International Journal of Human Sciences , 2009,
Abstract: The use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in Higher Education is considered a pre-requisite for adaptation to the European Higher Education Area. The objective is to assess the didactic possibilities of these resources in attaining the objectives sought. Pedagogical reflection about ICT should focus on how these resources can benefit students, what they represent in the curriculum, and what learning, competencies, attitudes, etc. they can foster in students, without losing sight of the kind of citizens and professionals that our present society demands. To make this change successfully, it is necessary to satisfy the training demands of the lecturers. The research is characterized by being a descriptive study based on interviews of lecturers, whether employed by the government or under contract, belonging to the various areas of specialty of the Universidad de Salamanca. Among the competences that the lecturers believed to be determinant in the European Higher Education Space, they consider that it is important to become familiar with new programs to help them with their subjects, to know how to create web sites, and to know how to use virtual environments. On the other hand, they stress the importance of being able to link the use of ICT to educational practice.

Abstract: the objective of this work was to verify the relation between attention variables and academic performance in compulsory secondary education, and to find out if the use of these strategies varies with student's age, academic level or gender. using a sample of 602 compulsory secondary education students, the acra learning strategies scale was applied. year-end marks were gathered in june. results confirm that attention variables - exploration, lineal underline, fragmentation and attention - are those which more directly influence in academic performance. insofar as frequency of use of techniques and attention strategies are concerned, negative correlations with age could indicate a slight decrease in their use during this educational stage; gender comparisons would indicate girls use them more frequently than boys.

Our intention was to study the attitudes of educators in the context of the research project entitled Integration of Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) as teaching tools at University within the framework of the European Higher Education Area . To do this, a Likert-type scale of attitudes was created rigorously following all the steps indicated by the experts. The scale consists of 24 items along with their characteristics of discrimination (all the t values for each item when compared to the averages among extreme groups are highly significant); reliability (calculated through different procedures, provides us with values, all of which are above 0.95); and validity (factorial validity; criteria validity: a correlation of 0.92 between the scores of the scale regarding the criterion behaviour ) could be considered completely satisfactory.

Journal of Biosciences and Medicines (JBM) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/jbm.2016.412012
Abstract: This research study was conducted at the undergraduate program of the Medicine Faculty of Universidad de Antioquia. Its main purpose was to analyze the training in communication skills for the medical act. To this purpose, a triangulation between a representative survey of the students, some interviews and focal groups between students and professors, and an analysis of a curricular document on the contents of communication as a generic skill were done. This study allowed us to conclude that the definition of generic competence in communication cannot be established without the participation of the medicine curriculum actors, and that it is paramount to integrate this learning to this university program. The result of the present study is a proposal to include the communicative competence for the medical act in the curriculum of the Medicine Faculty of Universidad de Antioquia.
Ethical and Legal Arguments about Telemedicine in Colombia  [PDF]

Journal of Computer and Communications (JCC) , 2017, DOI: 10.4236/jcc.2017.53013
Abstract:
This paper makes a reflection of humanistic approach about telemedicine in the cyber culture context, including a debate on the “digital era” and the nature of human communication. It is aimed at interpreting the influence of the technological era in the communication between the emitting subjects and receptors that emerge from communicative relations in telemedicine. This is the result of the analysis on legitimacy and legality of Communication for Health among individuals interacting in the cyberspace, mediated and conceived by modern technologies such as computer science, telematics and cybernetics. Telemedicine, according to ethical and legal proposals, can be subject of criticism because of the displacement of the medical doctor-patient relationship. Bigger distance and asymmetries in the medical act are established, being exposed to the inter-subjective relations of the cyberspace that immerses the patient into a deeper vulnerability, mediated by the technology that overflows him. A literature review through the empirical-analytical method, aimed at describing the impact of telemedicine in users, was done. This technology of recent use in Colombia promises to become a tool to support the solution of some health problems. Its development must be linked to the use of regulations that involve the “must be”, and its application must be decided according to legal principles that take on responsibility on medical doctors and technicians. The inevitable development of medical technology and its application in telemedicine may lead to the vulnerability of ethical principles, and consequently, the harm and misinterpretation of the medical act.
