A Novel Approach for Inferring the Proportion of Terrestrial Organic Matter Input to Marine Sediments on the Basis of TOC:TN and δ13Corg Signatures  [PDF]

Open Journal of Marine Science (OJMS) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ojms.2013.32009
Abstract:

The ratio of total organic carbon to total nitrogen (TOC:TN) and the stable carbon isotope ratio of organic matter (δ13Corg) are widely applied for inferring the origin of organic matter (OM) in Quaternary marine sediments. A plot of TOC:TN vs. δ13Corg is useful for such studies but is strongly based on qualitative constraints. This study is based on the qualitative characterization of the source of Quaternary OM via analysis of TOC:TN and δ13Corg signatures, but also proposes a probability parameter, which combines both signatures, to infer the amount of Terrestrial OM Input (TOMI). This index provides a method for quantifying the proportion of terrestrial OM vs. marine OMin a more comprehensive manner. The TOMI index concept was applied to a study area in theJoetsuBasin, eastern margin of theJapanSea, where previous studies have characterized theOMfrom the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) to the present. The upwards increase in TOC indicates thatOMproduction during the Holocene was higher than during the LGM. The enriched δ13Corg signature upwards and decrease in TOC:TN suggest predominantly marine phytoplankton OM during the Holocene. Throughout the LGM, low OM production with depleted δ13C

This article examines the legal notion of power with the aim of establishing its structure and defining its extent. The analysis of powers is built refining any deontic element in its structure and therefore assuming that norms of competence are the only type of rules which constitute them. Therefore a power is a rule which establishes that an act of an individual results in a legal change, without considering any deontical aspect regarding to its exercise. To prevent the concept has enormous scope it is bounded strictly, firstly, limiting its size to legal changes but not physical or material affecting any object or subject ones and, secondly, the object of the power is referred only to those acts that cause legal chan

REPRESENTACIóN BURLESCA DE LOS BLASONES EN GRAN SE?OR Y RAJADIABLOS
Hermosilla,Luis;
Revista chilena de literatura , 2011, DOI: 10.4067/S0718-22952011000300009
Abstract: this essay analyses the array of satirical resources employed by eduardo barrios in his gran se?or y rajadiablos (greatlordandhellraiser) to create a humoristic narration undermining the ideological perception that favored the peninsular last name and lineage as hegemonic signs of aristocratic status. through a literary caricature-like representation of the emblematic chains related to the casaquemada court of justice and the valverde predecessors' coat of arms, barrios satirizes the persistence of an anachronic ideology of social differentiation held by some sectors of the chilean society represented in this novel. such ideology becomes incompatible with the new democratic ideals brought along by the emerging republic.
REPRESENTACIóN BURLESCA DE LOS BLASONES EN GRAN SE OR Y RAJADIABLOS

This essay analyses the array of satirical resources employed by Eduardo Barrios in his Gran Se or y rajadiablos (GreatLordandHellRaiser) to create a humoristic narration undermining the ideological perception that favored the Peninsular last name and lineage as hegemonic signs of aristocratic status.

Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X2007000200010
Abstract: background: attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (adhd) is the most common neuropsychiatric disorder of infancy and one of the most prevalent chronic diseases found in schoolchildren. objective: to evaluate the prevalence of adhd in schoolchildren through the use of a questionnaire responded by school-teachers. method: a total of 774 children enrolled in the public and private school systems were evaluated. the diagnostic instrument used was a teacher adhd scale. results: results showed that 6.7% of children were considered highly likely to have the disorder. of the more severe cases of adhd, the hyperactive-impulsive subtype was more frequently identified in girls, while the inattentive subtype was more prevalent among boys. conclusion: the symptoms of attention deficit in hyperactive children may be underestimated by teachers since the symptoms of hyperactivity are more noticeable and disruptive.

Abstract: this study aims to estimate the prevalence of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (adhd) in scholar children through a teacher's questionnaire. a pilot study was conducted based in the total number of students under high school, in public and private schools in salvador, bahia, brazil. the instrument used was teacher's version of adhs scale. eight kids (5.3%) were recognized as highly probability of attention deficit disorder, three (2%) with high probability of subtype hyperactive/impulsive, and one (0.6%) as combined subtype. children with adhd might have serious social problems, not only brought by the disorder, but also due to co morbidity with other disorders, leading to serious social withdrawn. early diagnostic and treatment of adhd might improve educational and psychosocial development of these kids.
Panic disorder and the respiratory system: clinical subtype and challenge tests
Freire, Rafael C.;Nardi, Antonio E.;
Revista Brasileira de Psiquiatria , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-44462012000500004
Abstract: introduction: respiratory changes are associated with anxiety disorders, particularly panic disorder (pd). the stimulation of respiration in pd patients during panic attacks is well documented in the literature, and a number of abnormalities in respiration, such as enhanced co2 sensitivity, have been detected in pd patients. investigators hypothesized that there is a fundamental abnormality in the physiological mechanisms that control breathing in pd. methods: the authors searched for articles regarding the connection between the respiratory system and pd, more specifically papers on respiratory challenges, respiratory subtype, and current mechanistic concepts. conclusions: recent evidences support the presence of subclinical changes in respiration and other functions related to body homeostasis in pd patients. the fear network, comprising the hippocampus, medial prefrontal cortex, amygdala and its brainstem projections, may be abnormally sensitive in pd patients, and respiratory stimulants like co2 may trigger panic attacks. studies indicate that pd patients with dominant respiratory symptoms are particularly sensitive to respiratory tests compared to those who do not manifest dominant respiratory symptoms, representing a distinct subtype. the evidence of changes in several neurochemical systems might be the expression of the complex interaction among brain circuits
