Sequence Complexity of Chromosome 3 in Caenorhabditis elegans

Abstract: The nucleotide sequences complexity in chromosome 3 of Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) is studied. The complexity of these sequences is compared with some random sequences. Moreover, by using some parameters related to complexity such as fractal dimension and frequency, indicator matrix is given a first classification of sequences of C. elegans. In particular, the sequences with highest and lowest fractal value are singled out. It is shown that the intrinsic nature of the low fractal dimension sequences has many common features with the random sequences. 1. Introduction The Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) is a 1?mm length transparent nematode. Thanks to its simple organic structure, it was taken as a model for research into genetic field. Early studies on C. elegans began in 1962 with some works on cell lineage and apoptosis [1, 2]. There are 2 distinct sexual types of the C. elegans, the hermaphrodite and the male. The second one is very rarely represented in nature (being approximately only the 0.05% of the population). We have 959 cells in the hermaphroditic species and 1031 cells for the male. The sexual difference at the chromosomal level provides: XX chromosomes for hermafrodite and X0 for the male. The sexual reproduction of C. elegans is realized by 2 distinct pathways: mating or, in case of the hermaphrodite, by a self-fertilization. The life cycle of C. elegans consists of 4 larval stages (from L1 to L4); however, if there exists some hard environment conditions, such as lacking of food, the C. elegans remains in the L3 larval stage, until the conditions improve. The complete sequencing of C. elegans genome was completed in 2002. The C. elegans has 5 chromosomes autosomes plus the sex chromosome X. Totally, it is made up of nearly 100 million base pairs and 19000 genes [3–5]. Study on fractal analysis of multigenome of C. elegans has shown that chromosome 3 is the one with multifractal characteristics higher than the others, the less multifractal appears to be the chromosome sexual X [6]. For the first time, in this work, we have analyzed the different types of sequences belonging to the genome of C. elegans, focusing our investigation on those that show fractal characteristics. Thus, chromosome 3 of C. elegans has been carefully studied because its unsymmetrical and inhomogeneous statistical characteristics. Abstract: The M\"obius function for a group, $G$, was introduced in 1936 by Hall in order to count ordered generating sets of $G$. In this paper we determine the M\"obius function of the simple small Ree groups, $R(q)={}^2G_2(q)$ where $q=3^{2m+1}$ for $m>0$, using their 2-transitive permutation representation of degree $q^3+1$ and describe their maximal subgroups in terms of this representation. We then use this to determine $\vert$Epi$(\Gamma,G)\vert$ for various $\Gamma$, such as $F_2$ or the modular group $PSL_2(\mathbb{Z})$, with applications to Grothendieck's theory of dessins d'enfants as well as probabilistic generation of the small Ree groups.
Complexity on Acute Myeloid Leukemia mRNA Transcript Variant

Abstract: This paper deals with the sequence analysis of acute myeloid leukemia mRNA. Six transcript variants of mlf1 mRNA, with more than 2000 bps, are analyzed by focusing on the autocorrelation of each distribution. Through the correlation matrix, some patches and similarities are singled out and commented, with respect to similar distributions. The comparison of Kolmogorov fractal dimension will be also given in order to classify the six variants. The existence of a fractal shape, patterns, and symmetries are discussed as well.

Abstract: this paper contextualizes and assesses the results of the 2001-2010 national plan for education. it clearly demonstrates that the goals for youth and adult education (yae), established by law 10.172, will not be reached. it analyzes the approach given to yae in the preparatory and final documents of the brazilian conference on education. the main challenges that the new national plan for education 2011-2020 will have to face in this field of education concern political-pedagogical concepts, funding, educator formation and professionalization, as well as collaboration among the different spheres of government.

Abstract: the paper reports the development of adult education in spain from its early stages in the 19thcentury to present days. emphasis is given to innovations introduced in the 80's by the teaching reform, wich was consolidated in 1990 by the general organization law of the teaching system. influences on this process from the pedagogical renovation movements as well as from international and multilateral european organizations are analyzed. among the innovations analyzed, the following are highlighted: adult education conceived as a paradigm of continuous education rather than the compensatory trait that historically had guided it; decentralization of education favoring autonomous communities; integration as a preeminent political and pedagogical principle; territory adopted as a planning unit for educational availability.

Abstract: the aim of this paper is to identify emerging themes and processes in the area of public policies for youth and adult education. this paper first explores the process that redefined the identity of and the public policies for youth and adult education in brazil, resulting from both the recognition of the learners' sociocultural diversity and the conflict between the compensatory paradigm and the concept of continuing education throughout life. it then discusses the challenges and conflicts of the public policies to overcome the marginal position assigned to youth and adults in the educational reform that took place in the 1990. it finally suggests that the main current challenges to be faced by the public policies in this field emerge from the dialogue agenda and the conflict between the movement favoring youth and adult education and the government. the latter include, among others, the articulation between literacy and schooling, the public financing strategies, the collaboration between the different government levels, and teacher training and professionalization.

Abstract: this article examines the education of youngsters and adults within the educational reform implemented in brazil during the 1990s, analyzing the fulfillment of the decentralization in this specific field of education as well the programs and beneficiaries, the deregulation and selective privatization of services. under this perspective, it is deemed that the educational reform was fettered by the goals of fiscal adjustment, a fact that resulted in the redefinition of the role of the state in the funding and offer of education services, producing a movement of the boundaries between public and private responsibilities in the promotion of education for young and adult persons. tendencies are highlighted of proliferation of providers, and of multiplication of youngster and adult education programs conducted in partnership between governmental and non-governmental agents. such practices are inspired in varying meanings attributed to the concepts of partnership and of non-governmental public services, admitting an economic-instrumental view as well as a perspective of democratization of the public sphere. considering these different meanings and implementation strategies, the article analyzes how the concept of partnership has been put in practice in three federal initiatives for the education of youngsters and adults - the solidary literacy program, the land reform education program, and the national plan for professional education and qualification.

Abstract: this article analyzes the results of a collaborative survey which has traced the recent trajectory of youth and adult education (yae) in twenty countries of latin america and the caribbean, drawing a cartography of the politics and programs of the governments and of the civil society. based on an exam of the regional context, the work draws conclusions about the roles recently played by yae and recognizes the plurality of particular social subjects which require this education modality. characterization and comparison of policies and programs of such countries lead to the identification of common trends, exceptional cases and critical aspects.

Abstract: O artigo situa a Educa o Básica de Jovens e Adultos no interior da reforma do ensino implementada no Brasil ao longo da década de 1990, analisando como as diretrizes de descentraliza o da gest o e do financiamento, a focaliza o dos programas e beneficiários, bem como a desregulamenta o e privatiza o seletiva dos servi os se concretizam nesse campo educativo. Avalia que a reforma educacional foi condicionada pelas metas do ajuste fiscal, o que acabou por redefinir o papel do Estado no financiamento e oferta dos servi os de ensino, levando a um deslocamento da fronteira entre as responsabilidades públicas e privadas na promo o da educa o de pessoas jovens e adultas. Destacam-se as tendências à prolifera o de provedores e à multiplica o de programas de educa o de jovens e adultos implementados em parceria entre agentes governamentais e n o-governamentais. Essas práticas inspiram-se em diferentes significados atribuídos aos conceitos de parceria e de servi o público n o-estatal, que comportam tanto uma vis o econ mico-instrumental quanto uma perspectiva de democratiza o da esfera pública. Considerando essas diferentes significa es e estratégias de concretiza o, o artigo analisa como o conceito de parceria vem sendo operacionalizado em três iniciativas federais de educa o de jovens e adultos - o Programa Alfabetiza o Solidária, o Programa de Educa o na Reforma Agrária e o Plano Nacional de Forma o e Qualifica o Profissional.
