Revista de Nutri??o , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S1415-52732002000100002
Abstract: the bean (phaseolus vulgaris, l.) is a legume of great importance in the brazilian typical diet. nevertheless, it presents a low protein quality due to its poor digestibility and low levels and bioavailability of its sulfur aminoacids. the aim of this study was to evaluate the digestibility of albumin and globulin protein fractions of dehulled black beans in conventional and germ-free mice and also in weaning rats (wistar) of 21 to 25 days of age. protein digestibility corrected amino acid score was also determined. true digestibility values in germ-free mice were 90.21 and 90.00%, in conventional mice were 85.53 and 86.73%, and in rats were 82.62 and 68.53%, for albumin and globulin respectively. protein digestibility corrected amino acid score was 61.00% for albumin and 51.00% for globulin. true digestibility values in germ-free mice were higher than those obtained with conventional animals. this fact suggests that intestinal flora is contributing to increase fecal nitrogen output in conventional animals, and, therefore, true digestibility of beans is being underestimated.

Modelling the Impact of Stages of HIV Progression on Estimates  [PDF]
Angelina Mageni Lutambi
Advances in Infectious Diseases (AID) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/aid.2015.53012
Abstract: HIV/AIDS is a public health problem especially in sub-Saharan Africa where majority of infections and deaths occur. Despite the large number of studies and efforts made in covering the data gap using mathematical models, little is known on how model estimates are confounded by the transmission variabilities that exist in stages of HIV progression. This work investigates the impact of including stages of HIV transmission in HIV/AIDS models. A deterministic HIV/AIDS model is developed and extended to include stages of HIV progression of infected individuals. Theoretical investigation of the models and numerical analyses indicate that the two models produce different estimates, with the model without stages producing lower estimates than the staged model. These results call for a careful consideration in evaluating the efficiency of HIV/AIDS models that are used to estimate and project the burden of HIV/AIDS disease.

CANIELLO, Marcello;BAXTER, Patrícia;LINO, Angelina Maria Martins;LIMA, Leandro Gregorut;PINTO, Walkyria Pereira;
Revista do Instituto de Medicina Tropical de S?o Paulo , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0036-46652002000300011
Abstract: a thirty three year-old, male patient was admitted at the hospital of the s?o paulo university school of medicine, at the city of s?o paulo, brazil, with complaint of pains, tingling and decreased sensibility in the right hand for the last four months. this had progressed to the left hand, left foot and right foot, in addition to a difficulty of flexing and stretching in the left foot. tests were positive for hbeag, igm anti-hbc and hbsag, thus characterizing the condition of acute hepatitis b. the alt serum level was 15 times above the upper normal limit. blood glucose, cerebral spinal fluid, antinuclear antibodies (ana) and anti-hiv and anti-hcv serum tests were either normal or negative. electroneuromyography disclosed severe peripheral neuropathy with an axon prevalence and signs of denervation; nerve biopsy disclosed intense vasculitis. the diagnosis of multiple confluent mononeuropathy associated to acute hepatitis b was done. this association is not often reported in international literature and its probable cause is the direct action of the hepatitis b virus on the nerves or a vasculitis of the vasa nervorum brought about by deposits of immune complexes.
Pharmacosomes: An Emerging Novel Vesicular Drug Delivery System for Poorly Soluble Synthetic and Herbal Drugs
Archana Pandita,Pooja Sharma
ISRN Pharmaceutics , 2013, DOI: 10.1155/2013/348186
Abstract: In the arena of solubility enhancement, several problems are encountered. A novel approach based on lipid drug delivery system has evolved, pharmacosomes. Pharmacosomes are colloidal, nanometric size micelles, vesicles or may be in the form of hexagonal assembly of colloidal drug dispersions attached covalently to the phospholipid. They act as befitting carrier for delivery of drugs quite precisely owing to their unique properties like small size, amphiphilicity, active drug loading, high entrapment efficiency, and stability. They help in controlled release of drug at the site of action as well as in reduction in cost of therapy, drug leakage and toxicity, increased bioavailability of poorly soluble drugs, and restorative effects. There has been advancement in the scope of this delivery system for a number of drugs used for inflammation, heart diseases, cancer, and protein delivery along with a large number of herbal drugs. Hence, pharmacosomes open new challenges and opportunities for improved novel vesicular drug delivery system. 1. Introduction The novel drug delivery system has been exploited a lot in the past few decades, and attention is also being paid to further develop this system. The two ideal requirements for a system to be novel are(1)drug delivery at a predetermined rate and for pre-determined span of time;(2)conveying the active entity to the target site.At this point of time, there is no such system that can fulfil all these requirements. So a lot of efforts are required to accomplish them using novel approaches. These goals are being achieved by concentrating attention either on drug distribution by unifying drug into a carrier system, modifying molecular drug construct, or by restraining drug release in the bioenvironment to ascertain assigned distribution profile. Novel drug delivery attempts to minimize the side effects and maintain relatively unvarying and potent levels of drug in the body. The carriers or chemical derivatization may help to localize the drug action spatially in diseased tissue or organ or adjacent to it [1]. Among the different pharmaceutical carriers (Figure 1), the vesicular carriers are extremely organized assemblies of bilayers of lipid that may be single or concentric in nature formed when the building blocks (amphipathic) of these bilayers encounter water [2]. The clinical use of many drugs particularly chemotherapeutic agents is limited because of their narrow therapeutic window [1]. So the novel approaches in drug delivery serve as a helping hand to achieve all these imperative goals. Figure 1: Different
The Lightest Neutralino in Supersymmetric Standard Model with Arbitrary Higgs Sectors
P. N. Pandita
Physics , 1997,
Abstract: We consider the neutralino mass matrix in a supersymmetric theory based on SU(2) $\times$ U(1) gauge group with arbitrary number of singlet, doublet and triplet Higgs superfields. We derive an upper bound on the mass of the lightest neutralino, and a lower bound on the mass of the heaviest neutralino, in such a theory. Assuming grand unification of the gauge couplings, the upper bound on the mass of the lightest neutralino can be expressed in terms of the gluino mass. For a gluino mass of 200 GeV, the tree level upper bound on the mass of the lightest neutralino is 92 GeV, which increases to 166.5 GeV for a 1 TeV gluino. We also discuss the effect of dominant one-loop radiative corrections on these bounds.
Upper Bound on the Mass of Lightest Higgs Boson in the Supersymmetric Majoran Model
P. N. Pandita
Physics , 1994, DOI: 10.1142/S0217732395001654
Abstract: We calculate an upper bound on the lightest Higgs boson mass in the supersymmetric singlet majoran model containing SU(2) X U(1) singlet right handed neutrino fields and a chiral singlet having two units of lepton number. We show that although the singlet vacuum expectation values and supersymmetry breaking masses do not decouple from the upper bound, even at the tree level, their effect is small, thereby reducing the bound to the corresponding bound in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. Radiative corrections to the bound are similar to those in the minimal model. We also show that the couplings of the lightest Higgs boson to the majorans are suppressed in this model.
