Abstract: Two hundred million people in the US are overweight or obese mirroring a worldwide trend that is associated with high morbidity and mortality rates. Health and fitness mobile technology applications have great capacities for supporting dieters’ life-style changes and could profit from and provide input of health behavior theories. Those theories have been demonstrated with massive clinical evidence to be efficient for fostering healthy lifestyle changes and weight loss. This research reviewed the 100 most popular mobile technology applications from iTunes App Store’s Health and Fitness category in respect coverage of health behavior theories’ concepts und chose 14 of those for a complete analysis. Applications provide good support for athletes’ workouts and have great potential to be extended to serve overweight users as well. Missing features could be easily implemented given the current state of technology. These developments look promising for tackling sustained weight loss in many mobile technology users.

Brunstein, Janette;Jaime, Pedro;
RAE eletr?nica , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1676-56482009000200004
Abstract: this article deals with the formation of support groups within the context of corporate diversity policies. there is very little research that looks at the practice of managing diversity. in an attempt to contribute to filling this gap this work analyses a women’s committee in order to understand in what way it is influenced by the diversity policy established by the organization’s management and the influence it has. an ethnographic case study was carried out in a transnational company, the brazilian headquarters of which are located in s?o paulo. the results indicate there is a paradox. on the one hand the committee that was analyzed represents a process of emancipation that point to more inclusive and participative management practices, but on the other it was noted that there are control mechanisms in place, because the management tries to regulate the way it functions.

Abstract: this research aimed to study the experience of managers in the inclusion of persons with disabilities (dp) in their teams. the intention was to identify and analyze the processes of learning and skills developed by managers to deal with the universe of dp, based on theoretical models of sandberg (2000), cheetham and chivers (1996, 2005) and cox and baele (1997). following the assumptions of the interpretative paradigm and of the basic qualitative study (merriam, 2002), we analyzed the experience of including six managers and six dp under their direction, with moderate to severe disabilities in five firms in sao paulo, multinational ones, from the segments of publishing, energy, diesel technology, automotive and agribusiness. the main instrument for data collection was in-depth interviews, supplemented by documentary analysis and direct observations. data analysis revealed that, for the managers, the act of including is more related to social justice issues than the idea of dp empowerment. such interpretation led them to prioritize the development of two types of skills: behavioral and ethics and values. the main learning process identified for developing these skills was the experiential, which led the managers to revise their concepts, interrogate and modify their beliefs and, as a result of this reflection, revise their way of managing. the results are intended to contribute to the discussion on the topic from a new perspective: the manager as agent of inclusion.

Brunstein, Janette;Serrano, Claudia Aparecida;
Cadernos EBAPE.BR , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1679-39512008000300008
Abstract: the objective of this research is to understand the meaning related to the inclusion experiences of managers and their people with disabilities (pwd) subordinates within the everyday working relation at great organizations. following the basic or generic qualitative studies by merriam, an investigation was conducted at five 'paulista' organizations which adopted formal diversity and inclusion policies: three from the financial sector (one private national bank, one multinational bank and a public bank), a publishing market company and a public organization of the transport sector. although the results highlights that, in spite of all the advances, the discourse and the praxis of inclusion at great organizations do not always conciliate the respect to the difference with opportunity equalities, and that the experiences are concentrated in the paradigm of support and services, much more than the paradigm of empowerment of pwd, the study contributes to the understanding of what is inclusion and its implications for pwd, managers and even to the organization.

Beltr?o, Danielle Cristine;Brunstein, Janette;
Revista de Administra??o (S?o Paulo) , 2012, DOI: 10.5700/rausp1022
Abstract: this article analyzes competence development experiences and the professional recognition of disabled individuals who are already part of an organization, taking into account the main actors involved in this process. it is based on a qualitative case study, carried out in a pharmaceutical multinational in the city of s?o paulo. the aim of the study was to describe and discuss the formal practices of this organization for the professional development of disabled people (dps), as well as the informal experiences of the latter in this firm. moreover, it analyzes the articulation with the external actors also involved in the process: the pharmaceutical industries union and a non-governmental organization (ngo) specialized in dps. the results problematize the initiative of promoting a process of constructing and developing competences by means of formal or informal experiences and self-improvement that is specifically for dps. the experience studied here showed that in this initiative, assumptions about the limitations caused by the biological characteristics of the individuals prevailed. the development practices have sometimes failed to deal with the potential of these professionals, who have progressed little, given the possibilities offered by the organization. another relevant result is that although there is some articulation between the company and the external agents, there is no effective dialogue or partnership that might enable the process of inclusion and development of dps to advance. finally, the study presented elements to encourage thinking on the conduction and implications of organizational programs for dps. these programs might foster progress or merely encourage the maintenance of the status quo of dps in the corporation.
