Abstract: We find the conditions upon the amplitude and frequency of an external electromagnetic field at which the dipole moment of a Bergman-Stockman spaser oscillates in antiphase with the field. For these values of the amplitude and frequency the losses in metal nanoparticles is exactly compensated of by gain. This shows that spasers may be used as inclusions in designing lossless metamaterials.

Abstract: We consider the relaxation of an excited two-level system (TLS) positioned near a spherical plasmonic nanoparticle (NP). The transition frequency of the TLS is assumed to coincide with the frequency of the condensation point of NP plasmonic resonances. We show that the relaxation of the TLS excitation is a two-step process. Following an initial exponential decay, the TLS breaks in to Rabi oscillations. Depending upon the distance between the TLS and NP, the probability of the TLS being in the excited state exhibits either chaotic or nearly regular oscillations. In the latter case, the eigenfrequency of the TLS-NP system coincides with one of NP multipole modes.
Forced Synchronization of Spaser by an External Optical Wave

Abstract: We demonstrate that when the frequency of the external field differs from the lasing frequency of an autonomous spaser, the spaser exhibits stochastic oscillations at low field intensity. The plasmon oscillations lock to the frequency of the external field only when the field amplitude exceeds a threshold value. We find a region of values of the external field amplitude and the frequency detuning (the Arnold tongue) for which the spaser synchronizes with the external wave.

Abstract: We show that depending on the values of the coupling constants, two different scenarios for the stationary behavior of a chain of interacting spasers may be realized: (1) all the spasers are synchronized and oscillate with a unique phase and (2) a nonlinear autowave travels along the chain. In the latter scenario, the traveling wave is harmonic unlike excitations in other known nonlinear systems. The amplitude of this wave is determined by pumping and the wavenumber is determined by the coupling constants. Due to the nonlinear nature of the system, any initial distribution of spasers' states evolves into one of these steady states.

Abstract: In the approach to the stationary regime, a spaser exhibits complicated and highly nonlinear dynamics with anharmonic oscillations.1 We demonstrate that these oscillations are due to Rabi oscillations of the quantum dot in the field of the nanoparticle. We show that the oscillations may or may not arise dependent on the initial conditions.
Exactly solvable toy model for a SPASER

Abstract: We propose an exactly solvable quasi-classical model of a spaser. The gain medium is described in terms of the nonlinear permittivity with negative losses. The model demonstrates the main features of a spaser: a self-oscillating state (spasing) arising without an external driving field if the pumping exceeds some threshold value, synchronization of a spaser by an external field within the Arnold tongue, and the possibility of compensating for Joule losses when the pumping is below threshold. Similar to the common laser, a transition to the spasing regime takes a form of the Hopf bifurcation.
