Abstract: Since the Emergency, the Malaysian government has maintained a security policy which somewhat paradoxically combines the use ofcoercive, repressive legislation with a "hearts and minds" ideology.Following 9/11, I argue that the government has adapted this "heartsand minds" approach to the so-called War on Terror. The BarisanNasional governments of Mahathir Mohamad and Abdullah Badawi bothformulated ideological strategies designed to undermine the ideological strength of al-Qaeda and establish Malaysia as a leader of the Muslim world. Mahathir and Abdullah hinged their ideological approach on a state-constructed form of Islam and sought to portray Malaysia as a tolerant and moderate Muslim country. However, it will be shown that the use of ideology in Malaysia is often calibrated to ensure regime security rather than national security. The Malaysian government has used its ideology to promote elite interests and limit the discursive space for alternative and opposing viewpoints. Significantly, ideology has been used to justify crackdowns against genuine political opponents and to legitimise the political status quo.

Abstract: The Malaysian government’s use of its repressive security legislation has had a significant impact on Malaysia’s modern political history. The focus of the present article is on the government’s use of its coercive security apparatus since the terrorist attacks of 9/11. My argument is that the apparatus is largely unchanged by the current global climate of the "War on Terror." Notably, Malaysia’s use of coercion has become increasingly less criticized by other governments, notably those in the West. Perhaps as a consequence, the government has become increasingly bold in its crackdowns against opposition elements. Following the political upheaval of the 2008 election, however, the future of the security apparatus is in question. --- Der Einsatz repressiver Sicherheitsgesetze durch die malaysische Regierung beeinflusste die moderne politische Geschichte Malaysias in nicht unerheblicher Weise. Dieser Beitrag analysiert den Einsatz des Sicherheitsapparates durch die malaysische Regierung seit den Terroranschla gen des 11. September 2001. Ich argumentiere, dass dieser Apparat im gegenwa rtigen weltweiten Klima des "Kriegs gegen den Terrorismus" gro tenteils unvera ndert blieb, dass jedoch gleichzeitig Malaysias Einsatz von Gewalt von anderen (vor allem westlichen) Regierungen weniger kritisiert wird als fru her. Eine mo gliche Konsequenz dessen ist die zunehmend ru cksichtslosere Vorgehensweise der Regierung gegen oppositionelle Stro mungen. Als Folge des politischen Umschwungs nach der Wahl 2008 steht die Zukunft des Sicherheitsapparates jedoch in den Sternen.
Developing an educational framework for the teaching of simulation within nurse education  [PDF]

The use of simulations as a teaching and learning tool within health care has increasing importance; simulations are seen as the major teaching method for practicing and assessing developing skills, knowledge, attitudes and meaningful decision-making within the field of nursing. Certainly the utilisations of simulations feature widely within many aspects of health care; a greater understanding of the key conceptual notions will serve to benefit all of those engaged within their application. This literature review has enabled the construction of a conceptual model for the teaching of simulation and can serve to promote the continued positive development of simulations within education. Through a consistent and insightful approach to teaching, dynamic learning will be assured within this very important aspect of engaging the nursing student within the learning process.

Abstract: An astrophysical MASER (Microwave Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation) is a source of stimulated spectral line emission. Maser emission is observed from the circumstellar envelopes of evolved stars, molecular clouds/star-forming regions, active galactic nuclei, supernova remnants, comets, and the Saturnian moons. It arises from molecules such as water (H2O), hydroxyl radicals (OH), methanol (CH3OH), formaldehyde (CH2O), silicon monoxide (SiO), ammonia (NH3), silicon sulphide (SiS), hydrogen cyanide (HCN), and from atomic hydrogen recombination lines. Masers are compact, of high brightness temperature, and often display narrow spectral line widths, polarized emission and variability. Free electron-cyclotron astrophysical masers additionally exist.

Searching for Cool Dust in the Mid-to-Far Infrared: the Mass Loss Histories of The Hypergiants $μ$ Cep, VY CMa, IRC+10420, and $ρ$ Cas

Abstract: We present mid- and far- IR imaging of four famous hypergiant stars: the red supergiants $\mu$ Cep and VY CMa, and the warm hypergiants IRC +10420 and $\rho$ Cas. Our 11 to 37 $\mu$m SOFIA/FORCAST imaging probes cool dust not detected in visual and near-IR imaging studies. Adaptive optics (AO) 8 - 12 $\mu$m imaging of $\mu$ Cep and IRC +10420 with MMT/MIRAC reveals extended envelopes that are the likely sources of these stars' strong silicate emission features. We find $\mu$ Cep's mass-loss rate to have declined by about a factor of 5 over a 13,000 history, ranging from 5 $\times$ 10$^{-6}$ down to $\sim$1 $\times$ 10$^{-6}$ $M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$. The morphology of VY CMa indicates a cooler dust component coincident with the highly asymmetric reflection nebulae seen in the visual and near-IR. The lack of cold dust at greater distances around VY CMa indicates its mass-loss history is limited to the last $\sim$1200 years, with an average rate of 6 $\times$ 10$^{-4}$ $M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$. We find two distinct periods in the mass-loss history of IRC +10420 with a high rate of 2 $\times$ 10$^{-3}$ $M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ until approximately 2000 yr ago, followed by an order of magnitude decrease in the recent past. We interpret this change as evidence of its evolution beyond the RSG stage. Our new infrared photometry of $\rho$ Cas is consistent with emission from the expanding dust shell ejected in its 1946 eruption, with no evidence of newer dust formation from its more recent events.
Susceptibility of Staphylococcus aureus Isolates Causing Bloodstream Infection to the Antimicrobial Peptide LL-37  [PDF]

Both bacterial and host factors contribute to complicated bloodstream infection (BSI) caused by Staphylococcus aureus including methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA). One bacterial factor that may affect the persistence of S. aureus in complicated BSI is reduced susceptibility to the innate immune defence peptide LL-37. LL-37 susceptibility among S. aureus isolates causing uncomplicated and complicated BSI was investigated. Following incubation with 2.5 μg/ml LL-37 for 1 h, the mean percentage survival was 67.6% and 74.9% for isolates causing uncomplicated and complicated BSI, respectively. Reduced LL-37 susceptibility may contribute to the persistence of S. aureus in complicated BSI.

Possible adverse events in children treated by manual therapy: a review

Abstract: To update the clinical research literature from the 2007 report by Vohra, Johnston, Cramer and Humphreys on possible adverse events in children treated by spinal manipulation.A review of the clinical research literature from June 2004 until January 2010 as reported in MEDLINE, PubMed and PubMed Central for adverse events specifically related to the treatment of pediatric cases by manual therapy.Only three new clinical studies, one systematic review with meta-analysis and one evidence report were identified. Two clinical studies reported on chiropractic care and one on osteopathic spinal manipulation in children. The systematic review investigated all studies of adverse events and manual therapy and was not specific for pediatric patients. The evidence review focused on effectiveness of spinal manipulation in a variety of musculoskeletal conditions. No serious or catastrophic adverse events were reported in the clinical studies or systematic review. However for adults, it has been estimated that between 0.003% and 0.13% of manual therapy treatments may result in a serious adverse event. Although mild to moderate adverse events are common in adults, an accurate estimate from high quality pediatric studies is currently not available.There is currently insufficient research evidence related to adverse events and manual therapy. However, clinical studies and systematic reviews from adult patients undergoing manual therapy, particularly spinal manipulation report that mild to moderate adverse events are common and self limiting. However serious adverse events are rare and much less than for medication commonly prescribed for these problems. More high quality research specifically addressing adverse events and pediatric manual therapy is needed.The treatment of children with manual therapy (MT) such as spinal manipulation is controversial within the medical community particularly with respect to adverse events [1].
