Peopling and Colonization in the Tsarist Age (19th-20th Century) Popolamento e colonizzazione della Siberia in età zarista (fine Ottocento-inizio Novecento)

Abstract: The article investigates the phenomenon of Siberian colonization, particularly during the last part of the 19th Century. While Siberia had previously long been considered as an empty space, simply a source of precious furs, by the end of the 19th Century, it was seen as a strategic resource for solving some of the problems of Russian agriculture. In order to exploit Siberian resources, Minister Vitte decided to conclude the pioneering phase of migration: the construction of the Transiberian railway was a key factor in this project. The impact of appropriating this immense territory was huge, it involved and, finally, deeply influenced the orientation of Russian thought, which gradually became more inclined to a Euro-Asian vision. Finally, the paper deals with the appearance of a Siberian specificity which also stengthened the regionalistic point of view. Evaluación de la actividad antioxidante y determinación del contenido de compuestos fenólicos en extractos de macroalgas del Caribe Colombiano

Abstract: nowadays, antioxidants are compounds of great interest because they help positively to maintain human health. there is a marked interest in searching for antioxidants of natural sources, such as seaweed. for this reason extracts from five colombian seaweeds: caulerpa mexicana, laurencia sp., sargassum sp., dictyota sp. and sargassum cymosum are analyzed in this work. total phenolic content is determined using the folin-ciocalteau method and their antioxidant activity is determined by the ddph method. results show that all studied species of colombian seaweeds have an antioxidant activity possibly related with their total phenolic content. sargassum cymosum is the most active and it contains major phenolic compounds content. results show that marine colombian sources have a big potential for searching substances, with application in the pharmaceutics and alimentary sector.

Abstract: Los antioxidantes son compuestos de gran interés en la actualidad por sus benéficas implicaciones para la salud humana. Dado que en hoy existe un marcado interés en la búsqueda de antioxidantes de fuentes naturales, como las algas marinas, en este trabajo se analizan los extractos metanólico y hexánico de cinco macroalgas Colombianas: Caulerpa mexicana, Laurencia sp., Sargassum sp., Dictyota sp. y Sargassum cymosum. Se determina su contenido de compuestos fenólicos totales siguiendo el método de Folin-Ciocalteau, y se mide su actividad captadora de radicales libres mediante el método del DPPH de los respectivos extractos. Los resultados muestran que todas las especies de macroalgas Colombianas estudiadas presentan actividad antioxidante, posiblemente asociada a su contenido de fenoles totales. La especie Sargassum cymosum es la que ofrece mayor rendimiento en cuanto a contenido de compuestos fenólicos, actividad captadora de radicales libres, y es la segunda en rendimiento en cuanto al contenido de compuestos solubles en metanol. Se demuestra así que los recursos marinos Colombianos representan una gran potencial en la búsqueda de sustancias con aplicación en el sector farmacéutico y alimentario. Ensino de Geometria Espacial métrica: uma experiência com modelagem

Abstract: O estudo de geometria permite o desenvolvimento de habilidades e conhecimentos em rela o a fatos e quest es do cotidiano. Entretanto, os resultados em exames oficiais apontam uma grande defasagem no ensino e aprendizagem, principalmente em geometria espacial. Esta pesquisa está inserida no contexto do ensino e aprendizagem da geometria espacial na educa o básica, em particular, à métrica dos sólidos geométricos. O objetivo do trabalho é apresentar uma sequência didática utilizando a modelagem matemática como alternativa metodológica, tendo em vista seu potencial para quebrar a dicotomia existente entre a matemática escolar e a matemática presente nas mais variadas situa es do cotidiano. A sequência foi desenvolvida em duas escolas públicas junto a estudantes do ensino médio. Para validar a sequência proposta, a pesquisa foi fundamentada nos princípios da engenharia didática e a análise foi realizada utilizando-se registros em diário de campo, registros das atividades desenvolvidas pelos estudantes e aplica o de questionários e testes diagnósticos. Os resultados obtidos levaram a concluir que houve um avan o por parte dos estudantes na apreens o de conceitos de geometria plana e espacial.
An occupation time formula for semimartingales in $\mathbb{R}^{N}$

Abstract: Inspired by coarea formula in geometric measure theory, an occupation time formula for continuous semimartingales in $\mathbb{R}^{N}$ is proven. The occupation measure of a semimartingale, for $N\geq2$, is singular with respect to Lebesgue measure but it has a bounded density "transversal" to a foliation, under proper assumptions. In the particular case of the foliation given locally by the distance function from a manifold, the transversal density is related to a geometric local time of the semimartingale at the manifolds of the foliation.

Abstract: purpose: to determine magnesium sulfate effectiveness to prevent eclamptic seizures in pregnant women diagnosed with preeclampsia. methods: a case-control study involving 489 pregnant patients admitted to the hospital de clínicas de porto alegre (hcpa) with the diagnosis of hypertension between january 1990 and january 1997. the patients were divided into two groups: those who received magnesium sulfate (group i) and those who did not (group ii). all patients were treated according to the hospital's standard protocol for the treatment of hypertensive pregnant women. the following variables were assessed: maternal age, race, number of seizures, number of seizures in patients receiving magnesium sulfate, period of magnesium sulfate administration, before and after delivery, maternal mortality, need of icu care, need of mechanical ventilation and length of hospital stay after delivery. data were assessed with epi-info 6.0 statistical package, using multivariate analysis. the main outcome measure was magnesium sulfate use. results: no differences were found between the two groups in terms of maternal age, race or gestational age. women who received magnesium sulfate had a higher mean systolic and diastolic blood pressure. women in the intervention group had a longer hospital stay and a greater need of icu care. need of mechanical ventilation and maternal mortality were similar in the two groups. twenty-two out of 353 women had one or more seizures before admission to the hospital. six women (27.3%) had one or two additional seizures after magnesium sulfate administration. no subjects had three or more seizures after receiving magnesium sulfate. conclusion: the results show that eclamptic seizures can be prevented by routine prophylactic magnesium sulfate administration.
Yolk Sac Mesenchymal Progenitor Cells from New World Mice (Necromys lasiurus) with Multipotent Differential Potential

Abstract: Fetal membranes are abundant, ethically acceptable and readily accessible sources of stem cells. In particular, the yolk sac is a source of cell lineages that do not express MHCs and are mainly free from immunological incompatibles when transferred to a recipient. Although data are available especially for hematopoietic stem cells in mice and human, whereas other cell types and species are dramatically underrepresented. Here we studied the nature and differentiation potential of yolk sac derived mesenchymal stem cells from a New World mouse, Necromys lasiurus. Explants from mid-gestation were cultured in DMEM-High glucose medium with 10% defined fetal bovine serum. The cells were characterized by standard methods including immunophenotyping by fluorescence and flow cytometry, growth and differentiation potential and tumorigenicity assays. The first adherent cells were observed after 7 days of cell culture and included small, elongated fibroblast-like cells (92.13%) and large, round epithelial-like cells with centrally located nuclei (6.5%). Only the fibroblast-like cells survived the first passages. They were positive to markers for mesenchymal stem cells (Stro-1, CD90, CD105, CD73) and pluripotency (Oct3/4, Nanog) as well as precursors of hematopoietic stem cells (CD117). In differentiation assays, they were classified as a multipotent lineage, because they differentiated into osteogenic, adipogenic, and chondrogenic lineages and, finally, they did not develop tumors. In conclusion, mesenchymal progenitor cells with multipotent differentiation potential and sufficient growth and proliferation abilities were able to be obtained from Necromys yolk sacs, therefore, we inferred that these cells may be promising for a wide range of applications in regenerative medicine.
PTR-MS in Italy: A Multipurpose Sensor with Applications in Environmental, Agri-Food and Health Science

Abstract: Proton Transfer Reaction Mass Spectrometry (PTR-MS) has evolved in the last decade as a fast and high sensitivity sensor for the real-time monitoring of volatile compounds. Its applications range from environmental sciences to medical sciences, from food technology to bioprocess monitoring. Italian scientists and institutions participated from the very beginning in fundamental and applied research aiming at exploiting the potentialities of this technique and providing relevant methodological advances and new fundamental indications. In this review we describe this activity on the basis of the available literature. The Italian scientific community has been active mostly in food science and technology, plant physiology and environmental studies and also pioneered the applications of the recently released PTR-ToF-MS (Proton Transfer Reaction-Time of Flight-Mass Spectrometry) in food science and in plant physiology. In the very last years new results related to bioprocess monitoring and health science have been published as well. PTR-MS data analysis, particularly in the case of the ToF based version, and the application of advanced chemometrics and data mining are also aspects characterising the activity of the Italian community.

Abstract:
Morphological assessment using Computed Tomo-graphy (CT) or Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is still the workhorse of tumor detection and diagnosis. In particular, MRI provides detailed information about cerebral tumor anatomy, cellular metabolism and hemodynamic features, making it a fundamental tool for a correct diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of the disease. Various new functional imaging modalities assessing tissue microstructure and physiology have increased the scope of neuro imaging and raised expectations among clinicians. This article provides an overview of the most advanced MR imaging techniques (functional MRI, perfusion-weighted imaging, diffusion-weighted imaging and MR spectroscopy) now available for neurosurgical planning and their role in brain tumors assessment. Their pros and cons are analyzed in order to find out which one may be chosen as best diagnostic pre-surgical protocol. At the moment none of the single techniques can be considered the golden standard; only the integration of advanced and conventional MR imaging proves to be a reliable tool in the hands of the neuro-radiologist and neurosurgeon, thus maximazing tumor resection and function preservation.
An Assessment of the English Proficiency of the Thai Workforce and Its Implication for the ASEAN Economic Community: An Empirical Inquiry  [PDF]

Abstract:
The ten nation members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) utilize English as the official working language for the organization. This study focused on the nation of Thailand to examine the assessed level of English proficiency of its workforce in relation to its ability to interact within ASEAN’s economic community (AEC). This is the first academic study to utilize a sample population consisting of human resources personnel from the top 100 private companies in Thailand who are in charge of employee training for learning English. Self-administered questionnaires were used to obtain self-assessments on the issues of level of English proficiency, language training, resource allocation for communication preparedness in AEC, and overall perceptions of the importance of mastering English within their respective companies. The results indicate that the acquisition of English as an economic lingua franca was considered important regardless of the demographic factors of the company examined. A majority of the respondents expressed the belief that their businesses had provided adequate resource allocation for English preparedness and a majority also indicated that their respective workforces possessed adequate English skills. However, a majority also expressed assessments that the employees in their companies did not find it easy to learn English and that Thais in general, and their employees in particular, did not like learning the language.
