Bosentan and sildenafil in the treatment of HIV-associated pulmonary hypertension
Pierangelo Chinello,Stefania Cicalini,Andrea Cortese,Maria Paola Cicini
Infectious Disease Reports , 2011, DOI: 10.4081/idr.2011.e14
Abstract: We present the case of an HIV/HCV-coinfected patient with HIV-related pulmonary hypertension (HRPH) who experienced a good clinical and functional response to bosentan, with a subsequent switch to oral sildenafil due to increased transaminase levels. Bosentan resulted less handy in this case, probably due to both side effects and co-morbidities.
Predictors of critical care nurses’ intention to leave the unit, the hospital, and the nursing profession  [PDF]
Claudio Giovanni Cortese
Open Journal of Nursing (OJN) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/ojn.2012.223046
Abstract: Nursing turnover and shortage are acknowledged as worldwide issues: understanding the factors that foster nurses’ intention to leave (ITL) is essential in retaining them. The present study aims at providing insight into the factors influencing critical care and intensive care nurses’ ITL the unit, the hospital, and the nursing profession. The study was conducted in two hospitals, by a questionnaire administered to all nurses employed in critical and intensive care units. 512 questionnaires (89.4%) were returned. Results revealed that a low job satisfaction (JS) for interaction with physicians and nurses, seniority ≥20 years, and working in Emergency are related to higher ITL the unit. Low JS for work organization policies, seniority ≥11 years, working in a private hospital, and higher educational level are related to higher levels of ITL the hospital. Low JS for professional status, for pay, and for work organization policies, age ≥40 years, part-time schedule are related to higher ITL the nursing profession. The research permitted detection of various predictors of different kinds of ITL, enhancing the importance of regular monitoring of ITL. In order to limit ITL, it would be important to work on the relationship with physicians and colleagues, work demands, organizational policies, and acknowledgement of competence.
Possible role of alpha-lipoic acid in the treatment of peripheral nerve injuries

Journal of Brachial Plexus and Peripheral Nerve Injury , 2010, DOI: 10.1186/1749-7221-5-15
Abstract: Dear Editors,We read with great interest the paper: ''Intraperitoneal alpha-lipoic acid to prevent neural damage after crush injury to the rat sciatic nerve'' by Senoglu and colleagues published in the November issue 2009 of the Journal of Brachial Plexus and Peripheral Nerve Injury [1]. We congratulate the Journal for the interest in this topic. This innovative study demonstrated the protective effect of α-lipoic acid (α-LA) administration in rat sciatic nerve crush injury by reducing the oxidative stress [1].This paper has aroused our attention because these findings can provide confirmation on the usefulness of α-LA administration in humans in a very common disease as back pain [2], which produces adverse effects on activities of daily living. Back pain is a common and disabling musculoskeletal disorder that often occurs in a working-age population. Sciatic nerve injury is a common consequence of low back pain caused by lumbar disc herniation that occurs with radicular pain, radiculopathy, or both [3]. Nerve injury may depend on length of time of crush insult. In fact, after the tissue destruction, free oxygen radicals can increase and cause tissue damage [1]. Many patients are affected by sub-acute and chronic low back pain and/or sciatica: this exerts an important impact on the quality of life, causing interference of sleep and enjoyment of life. Many clinical studies have compared the efficacy of surgery versus prolonged conservative treatment in the low back pain and/or sciatica [4], concluding there is no clear evidence that surgery is more beneficial than conservative treatment. Moreover often patients are affected by neuropathic pain also after the surgery. It is common knowledge that conservative treatments are tried first and surgery must be the last resort, as drug therapy (paracetamol, tramadol, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, myorelaxant, steroids, antidepressants, etc.) and physical exercise (aerobic work, Back School, Mc Kenzie, Global Postural
Semantic Search and Browsing nell'ambito dei Beni Culturali
Claudio Cortese
Bollettino del CILEA , 2012,
Abstract: Today, cultural heritage represents one of the most promising and challenging areas for the application of the standards and technologies that fall within the domain of the "Semantic Web". Organization of data according to the Semantic Web standards is accompanied by the need to provide users with innovative tools for finding and browsing the information, particularly in the presence of data with a high degree of interconnection and which can be very heterogeneous, like those belonging to the cultural heritage domain. The paper, after a short introduction, analyzes the major issues related to semantic search and browsing, also in the light of the practical experiences carried out by CILEA, which since 2008 is engaged in the creation of Semantic Digital Libraries.
Are passive red spirals truly passive? - The current star formation activity of optically-red disc galaxies
L. Cortese
Physics , 2012, DOI: 10.1051/0004-6361/201219443
Abstract: We use GALEX ultraviolet and WISE 22 micron observations to investigate the current star formation activity of the optically-red spirals recently identified as part of the Galaxy Zoo project. These galaxies were accurately selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey in order to be pure discs with low or no current star formation activity, representing one of the best optically-selected samples of candidate passive spirals. However, we show that these galaxies are not only still forming stars at a significant rate >= 1 M_sun/yr but, more importantly, their star formation activity is not different from that of normal star-forming discs of the same stellar mass (M* >= 10^10.2 M_sun). Indeed, these systems lie on the UV-optical blue sequence, even without any corrections for internal dust attenuation, and they follow the same specific star formation rate vs. stellar mass relation of star-forming galaxies. Our findings clearly show that, at high stellar masses, optical colours do not allow to discriminate between actively star-forming and truly quiescent systems.
Relative Entropy and Single Qubit Holevo-Schumacher-Westmoreland Channel Capacity
John Cortese
Physics , 2002,
Abstract: The relative entropy description of Holevo-Schumacher-Westmoreland (HSW) classical channel capacity is applied to single qubit channels. A simple formula for the relative entropy of qubit density matrices in the Bloch sphere representation is derived. This formula is combined with the King-Ruskai-Szarek-Werner qubit channel ellipsoid picture to analyze several unital and non-unital qubit channels in detail. An alternate proof that the optimal HSW signalling states for single qubit unital channels are those states with the minimum channel output entropy is presented. The derivation is based on the symmetries of the qubit relative entropy formula and the King-Ruskai-Szarek-Werner qubit channel ellipsoid picture. A proof is given that the average output density matrix of any set of optimal HSW signalling states for a (qubit or non-qubit) quantum channel is unique.

Abstract: only few cases of rhino-orbital mucormycosis in patients with liver cirrhosis are described in the literature and most of these patients showed an associated diabetes mellitus. we describe a case of rhino-orbital mucormycosis in a patient with liver cirrhosis without other risk factors.
Religiosos viajeros: el Padre Giovacchino Geroni (o.f.m.) en Chile (1920-1922)
Cortese,Luis O;
Universum (Talca) , 2006, DOI: 10.4067/S0718-23762006000100008
Abstract: the franciscan giovacchino geroni visits argentina, uruguay, chile and brazil between august 1920 and february 1922 in order to raise money for the italians blinded by the war, describing that journey in il mio viaggio nel sudamerica, book published towards 1923. a subsidiary desire - the survival or the strengthening of the idea of italianhood among them - does not appear to be a concern in the chilean stage of the tour. the immigrants he deals with there appear integrated to the new fatherland, although they show interest by the problems of its native country. he highlights the supposedly "innnate" virtues of its fellow countrymen applied to the fulfillment of an immanent "mission", as well as the wealth and landscapes of the territory. we emphasize its modern vision of the value of the mass media: he turns to cinema to strengthen his task. it arises as a hypothesis, if among the implicit intentions of the journey, was not that of espionage, which he had already made for italy in china towards 1900. we did not find any references concerning chile's domestic policy, ruled by arturo alessandri, an attitude repeated in the other countries he visits. institutionally he only contacts consular agents, religious orders and italian institutions and not local authorities

Institucionalmente sólo contacta con agentes consulares, órdenes religiosas e instituciones italianas y no con autoridades locales The Franciscan Giovacchino Geroni visits Argentina, Uruguay, Chile and Brazil between August 1920 and February 1922 in order to raise money for the Italians blinded by the war, describing that journey in Il mio viaggio nel Sudamerica, book published towards 1923. Emilia Groppo,Claudio Cortese
Bollettino del CILEA , 2011,
Abstract: Over the years CILEA, combining its expertise in the field of library automation, digital libraries and open archives with its capacity in application services development and integration, as well as its in-depth knowledge of standards and protocols for cataloguing and interoperability, has increasingly expanded its activities in the field of cultural heritage. It was thus possible to develop a solid experience, both technological and methodological, in the management of digital humanities projects, resulting from many collaborations with domain experts from various Italian universities and public agencies, in full compliance with the ministerial mandates. Today CILEA is therefore a reliable partner in the many fields of application of the Information and Communication Technology to the world of cultural heritage. The paper presents the main projects undertaken by the Consortium in the recent years and the services it can provide within the cultural domain.
