Amazonian Fruits: An Overview of Nutrients, Calories and Use in Metabolic Disorders  [PDF]

Abstract: Amazonian fruits are outstanding in quality. They are consumed as true delicacies of nature by the Brazilian population. Besides their attractive attributes, i.e. appearance, different textures and distinctive flavors, their nutritional value is diversified in the type of calories and the functional food ingredients. In addition to being very palatable, Amazonian fruits provide energy-rich macronutrients (lipids, proteins and carbohydrates), micronutrients (minerals, water-soluble vitamins and fat-soluble vitamins), prebiotics (dietary fibers, especially pectin), bioactive substances (carotenoids and polyphenols), variety in the diet and improvement in the organoleptic properties and digestibility of (mixed) foods. This study first aimed to review concepts applicable to nutritional constituents and caloric contents of Amazonian fruits. It also attempted to clarify the potential use of these fruits in metabolic disorders (i.e. diabetes mellitus and/or obesity). To fulfill these purposes, 12 fruits were chosen for their dietetic significance in the Brazilian Amazonia.

Abstract: Boozer addressed the role of magnetic helicity in dynamos [1]. He pointed out that the magnetic helicity conservation implies that the dynamo action is more easily attainable if the electric potential varies over the surface of the dynamo. This provided motivated us to investigate dynamos in Riemannian curved surfaces [2]. Thiffeault and Boozer [3] discussed the onset of dissipation in kinematic dynamos. In this paper, when curvature is constant and negative, a simple laminar dynamo solution is obtained on the flow topology of a Poincare disk, whose Gauss curvature is K = –1. By considering a laminar plasma dynamo [4] the electric current helicity λ ≈ 2.34 m–1 for a Reynolds magnetic number of Rm ≈ 210 and a growth rate of magnetic field |γ| ≈ 0.022 are obtained. Negative constant curvature non-compact H2 manifold, has also been used in onecomponent electron 2D plasma by Fantoni and Tellez [5]. Chicone et al. (CMP (1997)) showed fast dynamos can be supported in compact H2. PACS: 47.65.Md.
Broken Symmetries in Spacetime with Torsion and Galactic Magnetic Fields without Dynamo Amplification  [PDF]

Abstract: Since Kostelecky et al [Phys Rev Lett 100, 111102 (2008)], have shown that there is an intimate connection between spacetime with torsion and the possibility of constraining it to Lorentz violation, a renewed interest in torsion theories of gravity has arised. In this paper, minimal coupling between photons on a torsioned background is shown to allow us to obtain the galactic magnetic field strength μG without dynamo amplification. This agrees with recent results by Jimenez and Maroto (2011) for spiral galaxies, with galactic magnetic field constraints from Dark matter without dy- namo amplification. The approach discussed here allow us to get rid of the unpleasant photon mass by simply consider- ing the Lagrangean cut off for second order torsion terms. Therefore though the gauge and Lorentz symmetries are bro- ken here one does not have to deal with photon masses.
The Efficiency of CP-Violating α2-Dynamos from Primordial Cosmic Axion Oscillation with Torsion  [PDF]

Abstract: Recently torsion fields were introduced in CP-violating cosmic axion a2-dynamos [Garcia de Andrade, Mod Phys Lett A, (2011)] in order to obtain Lorentz violating bounds for torsion. Here instead, oscillating axion solutions of the dynamo equation with torsion modes [Garcia de Andrade, Phys Lett B (2012)] are obtained taking into account dissipative torsion fields. Magnetic helicity torsion oscillatory contribution is also obtained. Note that the torsion presence guarantees dynamo efficiency when axion dynamo length is much stronger than the torsion length. Primordial axion oscillations due to torsion yield a magnetic field of 109 G at Nucleosynthesis epoch. This is obtained due to a decay of BBN magnetic field of 1015 G induced by torsion. Since torsion is taken as 10–20 s–1, the dynamo efficiency is granted over torsion damping. Of course dynamo efficiency is better in the absence of torsion. In the particular case when the torsion is obtained from anomalies it is given by the gradient of axion scalar [Duncan et al., Nuclear Phys B 87, 215] that a simpler dynamo equation is obtained and dynamo mechanism seems to be efficient when the torsion helicity, is negative while magnetic field decays when the torsion is positive. In this case an extremely huge value for the magnetic field of 1015 Gauss is obtained. This is one order of magnitude greater than the primordial magnetic fields of the domain wall. Actually if one uses tDW ~ 10-4 s one obtains BDW ~ 1022 G which is a more stringent limit to the DW magnetic primordial field.

Abstract: this essay presents and attempts to refute some of the main creationist arguments against the theory of evolution. creationists hold, among other arguments, that evolution is a theory, not a fact. this argument may be disputed inasmuch it is clarified what a theory is. creationists also hold that evolution is not falseable; that the fossil record is incomplete; and that natural selection cannot generate some complex structures, especially the eye and flagella; these arguments have also given rise to the neo-creationist movement called "intelligent design".

Abstract: this paper aims to illustrate: 1. that for the founders of population genetics, fisher and wright, there was a close relationship between physics and biology. 2. the mathematics of population genetics aimed at placing evolutionary theory as a -hard science- at the same level as boltzmann and maxwell?s physics. 3. this effort showed that the concept of evolution by natural selection does not contradict the laws of thermodynamics that rule the evolution of physical systems. 4. the metaphor that paradoxically represents living beings as -maxwellian demons- anticipated some aspects of the present day evolutionary theories that recur to the thermodynamic of complex adaptive systems as developed by prigogine, 1970, and kauffman, 1993. 5. to conclude, i contrast darwin and einstein in order to clarify, how can be understood today, the bridges and bidirectional connections between physics and biology.

Abstract: the study of rna molecules have contributed to formalizing the physical notion of information considered in its dual nature analog and digital. the central dogma of molecular biology restricts the notion of information to its digital aspect and so to copying fidelity of symbol’s string during replication (dna-dna) and transcription (dna-rna), and also in translation to proteins, by means of a genetic code. this vision leads to the paradox about what molecule came first, dna or proteins, that is solved by the hypotheses that postulates the existence of prebiotic rna prior to the emergence of genetically encoded proteins and dna. this hypothesis is based on solid empirical findings such as the discovery of catalytic rna and rna structures highly conserved in evolution and found in all living organisms. besides, experimental models inspired on virus rna replication and computational models that deal with the relations between secondary planar structures and linear sequences, confirm the advantages of rna molecules to understand the origin of genetic information, due to their decisive role in the emergence of the genetic code, their functional role in gene expression, their structural plasticity and the accessibility of functional structures from any arbitrary sequence that undergoes cycles of mutation and selection. to state that the emergence of digital information requires the prior existence of analog information, not only contributes to solve specific problems of biology, but mainly contributes to advance in the understanding the physical meaning of the two different information measurements proposed by claude shannon and gregory chaitin.
Sobre pluralismo, verdade e tolerancia: diálogos epistemológicos e éticos para uma educa??o intercultural

Abstract: although very diferent from one another, the concepts of multiculturalism and interculturality have grown in importance in the educational discourse. several studies have brought such concepts closer to the curriculum field, the pedagogical practice and popular education. to contribute to the debate on the foundations of education, this work focuses on two theoretical approaches regarding ethical and epistemological issues. this is intended to reframe the intercultural perspective, in education, with an emphasis on the concepts of truth, pluralism and tolerance through a dialogue between karl popper and norberto bobbio. based on the former, this paper shows how the concept of truth can help us understand a proposal for intercultural education, while the later allows it to advance from epistemological issues to some of the ethical challenges faced by pluralism and tolerance in the pedagogical practice.

Abstract: from wheat (triticum aestivum l.) culms collected at the end of january, 1995 from farmland affected by a severe outbreak of eyespot, located in southern chile (38o14? s, 72o38? w), the presence of small, 0.2 to 0.5 mm of diameter, black apothecia at the base of the culms were observed with a stereo microscope. on analyzing these structures, cylindric to fusoid asci, of 35 to 38 μm x 5.9 to 7.4 μm were also observed. after 24 h in a humidity chamber, the apothecia discharged hyaline, fusoid, 0-1 septate, rounded end ascospores, with an average size of 8.9 μm (7.4 to 10.3) x 2.07 μm (1.95 to 2.34). monoascosporic cultures effected in a water-agar (wa) + rifampicin medium, originated after 30-35 days colonies with the development of conidia characteristic of pseudocercosporella herpotrichoides var. herpotrichoides. the pathogenicity tests carried out on 12-day old wheat seedlings, with colonies developed from monoascosporic cultures, resulted in the development of characteristic symptoms of eyespot at the end of 30 days. the morphology of the apothecia, the asci, and the ascospores, as well as the development of characteristic conidia of p. herpotrichoides obtained from monoascosporic cultures, and the pathogenicity test carried out on wheat seedlings, demonstrated the presence of tapesia yallundae wallwork & spooner, the teleomorphic state of p. herpotrichoides (fron.) deighton var. herpotrichoides, in southern chile. this is the first identification of p. herpotrichoides var. herpotrichoides in chile, and in the american continent.
