Promoting Basic Competences in EFL Instruction by Means of E-mail Tandem
Andrés Canga Alonso
Journal of Language Teaching and Research , 2012, DOI: 10.4304/jltr.3.2.232-238
Abstract: This paper intends to show how e-mail tandem (Brammerts & Little, 1996; Gl smann & Calvert, 2001; Stickler & Lewis, 2003) has been integrated in the English curriculum of a Diversificación Curricular Programme (3rd and 4th grade of Secondary Education) to promote linguistic, intercultural, learning to learn and digital competences (LOE, 2006). The first part will be devoted to explaining the main characteristics of e-mail tandem and its close relationship with the aforementioned four competences, as well as with the Common European Framework of Reference (2001) and the European Language Portfolio (ELP) (Little & Perclová, 2001; Cassany, 2006). The second part will deal with the main characteristics of the students involved and the instruments used to practise the linguistic, intercultural, learning to learn, and digital competences, i.e. e-mails written by the students, learning diaries (Nunan, 1992; Otto, 2003; Oxford, 1996) and reflections on the ELP (Palacios, 2006). Finally, examples of student performance will be presented, together with the main conclusions derived from their work, including some suggestions for further research.

Abstract: background: drug addiction is not a contraindication to indicate treatment of chronic hepatitis c (chc), but it has been observed that consumers are more abandon. to study the clinical outcome of hepatitis c treatment in inmate patients with a history in injecting drugs and to analyze which were the causes of abandon. methods: a multicenter retrospective clinical trial including 162 inmate patients that underwent hcv therapy with pegylated interpheron and ribavirin between january 2003 and january 2008 was performed. it was found in medical history who completed treatment. we used a questionnaire to determine variables associated with discontinuation of treatment and multivariate analysis was performed using logistic regression to identify predictors. results: 82,7% were intravenous drug users, 21.7% had hiv coinfection and 20,5% were on methadone maintenance therapy. 91,4% completed the whole treatment; 33.1% admitted heroin and/or cocaine consumption during therapy and 7.9% admitted needle and syringe-sharing. relapse in intravenous consumption in or out of prison was the only one predictive factor of treatment interruption (or: 10.39, ic: 1.93-55.88; p= 0.006). conclusion: only 9,6% of patients discontinued treatment. drug use was the main cause of discontinuation of treatment. we recommend the treatment of drug addiction to reduce the discontinuations of treatment for chronic hepatitis c.
A Systematic Bibliographical Review: Barriers and Facilitators for Access to Legal Abortion in Low and Middle Income Countries  [PDF]
Freddy Andrés Barrios Arroyave, Paula Andrea Moreno Gutiérrez
Open Journal of Preventive Medicine (OJPM) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/ojpm.2018.85015
Abstract: Background: There is a complex interplay between women’s preferences, abortion services availability and the context in which these are provided. Even in countries where it is legal, denial of abortion is common, especially in low and middle income countries, forcing women to look for the service elsewhere and bringing serious consequences to the health and wellbeing of many women and their families. This non-systematic review pretends to answer the question: Which are the barriers to and facilitators for the access to legal abortion services in low and middle income countries? Methods: A non-systematic bibliographical review. Inclusion criteria: all quantitative, qualitative and evidence synthesis studies performed in low and middle income countries according to the World Bank classification for 2015 and published in English, Spanish and Portuguese language, between 2005 and 2017. Exclusion criteria: articles evaluating the efficacy of interventions, addressing the knowledge about abortion procedures among health care students and personnel, as well as those that only included sex workers. Results: The database search yield 199 articles in MEDLINE. 24 in Scopus and 38 in Scielo. A total of 22 articles including 15 countries from Africa (n = 6), Asia (n = 5), Central and South America (n = 3) and Europe (n = 1). The legal status of abortion in each of these countries was studied and described. For the analysis of the information, three categories of deepening were established: Laws and policies, Service delivery and Women’s abortion care-seeking behavior. Conclusion: the determinants of access to abortion in low and middle income countries are convoluted as multiple delays and barriers usually overlap. Similarly, stigmatization has a great impact across all the steps of abortion provision. Multiple facilitators were proposed in the three aspects of abortion provision, but they need to be adjusted depending on the context of each country.
Abstract: The Philistine Ekron inscription, discovered during the 1996 archaeological campaign at Tell Miqne (Israel), is written in a Canaanite dialect, but it mentions a feminine theonym, Ptgyh, unknown until now. Its explanation has been attempted through comparison with the Indoeuropean languages. In our opinion, it may be a name composed of two elements: PT, related to the root *POT / POS 'Lord', and GYH 'earth'. Thus, this theonym may be understood as 'the Earth Lady'.
