The study of families as a whole and of couples in particular has undergone significant changes. Not only do research methods suit the complexity of the theme better, but also couples themselves have experienced deep transformations regarding relationship possibilities. In this article the emergence of one of these possibilities is outlined: dual career couples. The lack of social models that foresee this form of interaction is surpassed by the creativity with which these dyads cope with relational dilemmas. Psychologists must be prepared to face the specific suffering and relational wealth of this population.

Abstract: the objective was to evaluate the replacement corn silage by coffee hulls in the diet on performance, total apparent digestibility of dairy heifers. twenty-four dairy holstein heifers, purebred and crossbred, were assigned, according to animal initial weight, to a randomized block design with four treatments (coffee hulls levels: 0.0, 7.0, 14.0, and 21.0% dm basis) and six replicates. all heifers were daily fed 2.0 kg concentrate. dm intake linearly increased, while fresh matter (fm) intake was not affected by the inclusion of coffee hulls in the diets. the increment of dm intake was approximately 20 g per unit of coffee hulls added to the diet (% dm) and the average intake of fm was 13.84 kg/d. digestibilities of dm, om, cp, cho, ndf and the concentration of ndt in the diet linearly decreased with the replacement of corn silage by coffee hulls, observing a reduction of 0.158 percent units in the digestibility of the dm per unit of coffee hulls added to the diet (% dm). the inclusion of coffee hulls negatively affected the weight gain that linearly decrease (5.51g bw) per unit of coffee hulls added to the diet), as the coffee hulls levels increased, in replacement of corn silage. coffee hulls could replace corn silage up to 14% level, dm basis, in diets for dairy heifers.

Abstract: twelve holstein lactating dairy cows were blocked by days in milk and randomly assigned to three replicated 4 x 4 latin square to evaluate the effect of different protein sources on intake, nutrient digestibility, and milk production and composition. a basal corn silage diet (60% of the total dry matter) was fed plus one of the following proteins sources (dry matter basis): soybean meal (sbm), cottonseed meal with 38% of crude protein (csm38), cottonseed meal with 28% of crude protein (csm28), or soybean meal plus 5% of urea/ammonium sulfate (sbmu). intakes of dry matter (dmi) and organic matter (omi) did not differ among diets but intake of total digestible nutrients (tdn) was greatest on the sbm diet. the digestibility coefficients (dc) of dm and om were lower on csm38, csm28, and sbmu diets when compared to the sbm diet. milk yield (my), 3.5% fat corrected milk, and milk fat content and yield all were not affected by feeding different protein sources to lactating dairy cows. however, feed and nitrogen efficiencies and milk protein content and yield were lower in the csm diets than on diets supplemented with sbm. it can be concluded that milk yield was maintained when cows were fed sbmu or csm38 in diets with forage (corn silage) to concentrate ratio of 60:40.

Abstract: twelve holstein lactating dairy cows were blocked by days in milk and randomly assigned to three replicated 4 x 4 latin square to evaluate the effect of different protein sources on efficiency of microbial protein synthesis, concentration of serum (nus) and milk (mun) urea nitrogen, and ruminal metabolism. a basal corn silage diet (60% of the total dry matter) was fed plus one of the following proteins sources (dm basis): soybean meal (sbm), cottonseed meal with 38% of crude protein (csm38), cottonseed meal with 28% of crude protein (csm28), or soybean meal plus 5% of urea/ammonium sulfate (sbmu). each experimental period lasted 18 days with 11 days for diet adaptation and seven days for sample collection. samples of urine and blood were obtained approximately four hours after the morning feeding on day 18 of each period. no significant differences among diets were observed for urinary volume (v), total purine derivatives excretion (pt), microbial cp synthesis and microbial efficiency, expressed in g of cp/kg of tdn intake. in addition, concentration of both nus and mun also did not differ among diets. it can be concluded that nus and mun as well as microbial cp synthesis and efficiency were not affected by feeding different protein sources to lactating dairy cows.

Abstract: the objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of three levels of concentrate (2.0, 4.0 and 6.0 kg/cow/day) and two levels of crude protein (cp) (14 and 16% total dietary dry matter), in comparison to mineral mixture (control) on the intake, apparent digestibility, milk composition and yield and on feed efficiency and use of concentrates of cows grazing elephant grass (pennisetum purpureum, schum) in the rainy season. twenty-one milking gyr cows with average body weight of 426 kg and yield of 13.0 kg of milk/cow/day at 55 days of lactation were distributed in randomized blocks design, with seven diets (treatments) in a 3 × 2 + 1 factorial arrangement and three replications, in a period of 84 days. forage dry matter intake was not influenced by the diets, but total dietary dry matter intake increased by 45% with the inclusion of concentrate in the diet. however, milk yield increased by only 17% (1.76 kg more milk per day) with the use of concentrate. for dairy gyr cows grazing elephant-grass during the rainy season, 2 kg of concentrate/cow/day and 14% of cp in the total diet provided the best productive response without harming body weight.

Abstract: twelve purebred and crossbred holstein cows were assigned to three replicated 4 x 4 latin squares to evaluate the effects of replacing corn grain with coffee hulls or soyhulls on chewing activity, ruminal metabolism, nitrogen utilization, and microbial protein synthesis. animals were fed a control diet containing 60% corn silage and 40% concentrate (cs diet) or three sugarcane based diets with forage to concentrate ratio of 40:60. the sugarcane diets contained 100% of corn in the concentrate (sc diet) or partial replacement of corn with 25% of coffee hulls (sch diet) or 50% of soyhulls (ssh diet). total chewing time was lowest on cs and did not change by the inclusion of coffee hulls or soyhulls in the diet. ruminal ph did not differ significantly at zero (pre-feeding) and at three hours after the morning feeding across diets. the same was observed for the ruminal concentration of ammonia n immediately before feeding. however, the concentration of ruminal ammonia n at three hours after feeding was lower on sch than on cs and ssh diets but was similar to that of sc diet. no significant differences were observed for the urinary excretion of urea n and milk urea n, which averaged 179.31 mg/kg bw and 12.59 mg/dl, respectively, among diets. replacing corn grain with coffee hulls or soyhulls did not improve the ruminal environment. microbial protein synthesis and microbial efficiency were both not affected by diets averaging 273 g/day and 130.08 g microbial cp/kg tdn, respectively.

Abstract: the objectives of this trial were to evaluate the effect of replacing corn meal with coffee hulls or soyhulls on intake and apparent digestibility of nutrients, milk yield and composition, and body weight (bw) change in lactating dairy cows. twelve purebred and crossbred holstein cows were assigned to three replicated 4 ′ 4 latin squares. diets were isonitrogeneous (14% of cp, dm basis) and control diet contained 60% corn silage plus 40%concentrate. three sugarcane based diets with 60% concentrate were used: control (without coffee hulls or soyhulls), 25% and 50% replacing corn meal by coffee hulls and soyhulls, respective. dry matter intake did not differ and averaged 19.39 kg/day among diets. although the intakes of cp and total digestible nutrients differ among treatments, all diets were able to meet the nutrional requirements for milk production, 3.5% fat-corrected milk (fcm), and bw gain because milk yield, fcm, bw change and plasma concentration of non-esterified fatty acids did not differ and averaged 20.54 kg/ day, 19.68 kg/day, 0.683 kg/day, and 226.99 μeq/l across diets, respectively. with the exception of lactose and solids nonfat no other significant differences in milk composition were observed across diets. in sugarcane based diets for cows producing 20 kg of milk/day, the corn can be replacement by 25% of coffee hulls or 50% of soyhulls since the concentrate participation is of 60%.
