INCREASED DISTANCE OF SHOOTING ON BASKETBALL JUMP SHOT

Journal of Sports Science and Medicine , 2012,
Abstract: The present study analyzed the effect of increased distance on basketball jump shot outcome and performance. Ten male expert basketball players were filmed and a number of kinematic variables analyzed during jump shot that were performed from three conditions to represent close, intermediate and far distances (2.8, 4.6, and 6.4m, respectively). Shot accuracy decreased from 59% (close) to 37% (far), in function of the task constraints (p < 0.05). Ball release height decreased (p < 0.05) from 2.46 m (close) to 2.38m (intermediate) and to 2.33m (long). Release angle also decreased (p < 0.05) when shot was performed from close (78.92°) in comparison to intermediate distances (65.60°). While, ball release velocity increased (p < 0.05) from 4.39 m/s (close) to 5.75 m·s-1 (intermediate) to 6.89 m·s-1 (far). These changes in ball release height, angle and velocity, related to movement performance adaptations were suggested as the main factors that influence jump shot accuracy when distance is augmented

Abstract: falls are associated with morbidity and mortality in older adults. the aim of this systematic review was to identify, describe and analyze the effects of physical exercise programs on the reduction of the risk of falls in adults above the age of 60. for this purpose, the medline/ pubmed, lilacs, and scielo databases available at the site of the latin american center of information in health sciences (bireme) were searched for articles comprising the period between 1999 and 2009 using the following keywords: accidental falls, elderly, exercise. a total of 385 publications were identified and 10 articles that met the criteria established in this study were selected. strength and balance activities were the most frequent components of the exercise programs, in addition to coordination, flexibility and aerobic exercise. however, there was no clear information regarding the frequency, duration and intensity of the sessions. it was concluded that programs combining strength and balance components with other interventions, performed at least twice a week, and monitoring the participants for 3 to 6 months after intervention were the most effective in reducing and preventing falls in older adults. however, a more detailed presentation of some methodological aspects is necessary to permit the reproduction of these studies and the comparison of their results.

Abstract: in open water swimming competitions, athletes are prone to environmental conditions and are frequently exposed to low temperatures, in contrast to what occurs in indoor competitions. in some circumstances the use of special swimming suits is allowed to avoid hypothermia. the aim of this study was to verify the effects of the use of a neoprene swimming suit in comparison to a conventional swimming suit on a number of cinematic and psychophysiological variables. twenty athletes experienced in swimming competitions (12 triathletes and 8 swimmers; 22.0± 6.6 yearsold), whose the performance was 75 ± 7.7% of the national record. athletes performed two maximal and two submaximal 400m crawl simulated competition with a whole body neoprene swimming suit and with a conventional swimming suit. mean speed (vm) stroke length (cb), stroke frequency (fb), swimming index (in), rate of perceived effort (pse), heart rate, and blood lactate concentration (lac) were compared between conditions. the time to perform maximal trials with the use of the neoprene swimming suit was 6.4% shorter than when wearing the traditional swimming suit. fb and the psychophysiological variables remained unchanged, while cb increased in response to the use of the neoprene swimming suit. the use of the neoprene swimming suit in submaximal trials provided smaller fb, fc, lac and pse and larger cb and in in comparison to the use of the traditional swimming suit. the results indicated that the neoprene swimming suit increases performance in biomechanical, physiological and perceptive aspects. the vm increase in maximal efforts does not depend exclusively on changes in fb and cb. possibly, increments of the parameters related to the swimming may have improved the mechanical efficiency of the movement, which may have provided a movement economy that resulted in a better performance.

The objective was to analyze if learning cues help children with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) on the acquisition of a complex motor skill. The sample consisted of ten children with DCD and 14 children with typical development, from 9 to 11 years, divided into the groups DCD with cues (DCDC), DCD without cues (DCDW), typical development with cues (TDC) and typical development without cues (TDW). The children participated in seven classes, during three weeks, to learn to dive roll. Cues used were "push the ground", "place your hands as far as possible" and "chin on the chest". The results weren’t statistically different among the groups, which indicate that cues didn’t show significant effect in learning of the dive roll.

Abstract: gait is the most common activity performed by humans, being a fundamental motor ability to locomotion. however, ageing is characterized by a gradual reduction of the locomotor apparatus efficiency which occurs by the decrease in strength, muscle mass and flexibility. this study aimed to verify the transient effect of a single session of hip extensor and flexor muscles stretching exercises over gait in elderly subjects. five elderly ladies (67.0 ± 3.8 years 1.59 ± 0.07 m; 64.3 ± 15.3 kg) volunteered to participate in the study. gait analysis was performed before and after stretching exercises. the stretching protocol was applied in a single session and consisted of three static stretching exercises conducted during 30s for the hip joint flexor and extensor muscles. after the stretching session, participants' gait showed reduced pelvic anterior tilt peak, greater hip range of motion and extension peak, greater knee range of motion, greater knee peak flexion angle during the mid swing and greater toe clearance (28.6%). results showed that immediately after a stretching session, the elderly women presented alterations in the gait pattern in which some variables suggest a reduced risk of fall. the effects of ageing over some variables were partially reversed and the participants presented a gait pattern more similar to young adults than before stretching.

Abstract: objectives: this study analyzed the effect of a standard and a modified checkout workstation during a simulated task on trunk postures of a supermarket checkout operator. methods: eight participants performed a task involving grasping, scanning and depositing products, while 3d images of the trunk were collected. results: a number of kinematic changes were observed in trunk posture. a greater anterior flexion (3.0±1.2o) and lateral bending during grasping (7.1±1.4o) were found in the standard checkout workstation when compared to the modified model (p<0.05). other variables did not show significant differences (p>0.05). discussion: the modified checkout workstation provided less lateral bending of the trunk to grasp products (8.1o ± 2.8; p<0.05), which was considered an advantage with respect to the standard model. changes in the sagittal and transversal planes were not observed (p>0.05), irrespective of the checkout workstations (p>0.05). the modified checkout workstation successfully reduced risk of injury in some aspects, particularly the problems associated with lateral bending of the trunk. other studies are required to test whether such potential benefits are obtained on a daily basis. conclusions: supermarket checkout operators may be at high risk of occupational injury due to different workstation demands. modifications to checkout workstation design are an attractive possibility to reduce postural stress and fatigue in checkout operators. longitudinal studies are required to test whether changes observed in the present study are sustained in the long term.
Poshistoria, filosofía y espiritualidad política
Blengino,Luis Félix;
Ideas y Valores , 2009,
Abstract: this paper raises the issue of the statute of philosophy in what has been called posthistory, from an approach that intends to articulate foucault's diagnosis of the present with rancière's political philosophy. we sustain that the so called postphilosophy is understood as spirituality in the age of the ending metanarratives, and coincides with the age of the expanding biopolitical governmental logic. therefore, philosophy's task, according to foucault, would become a practical one, that is to say, spiritual. we study this spirituality in its political aspect.

BACKGROUND: The first sign of plantar sensory impairment due to aging and peripheral neuropathies are manifested on the soles of the feet and can result in postural control and balance deficits. The aim of cutaneous sensitivity tests is to assess the skin sensory innervation density such as those of the distal segments. In some studies the two-point discrimination test (TPD) have been applied on the soles of the feet and have proven to accurately distinguish elderly with and without falls events. However, the reproducibility of the test still needs to be determined. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to verify the intra-observer reproducibility of the TPD test on the soles of feet in asymptomatic elderly and young individuals. METHOD: The sample was composed of 21 physically active elderly participants (67±5 years; 1:56±0.08 m, 65.3±13.7 kg) and 21 physically active young adults (24±3 years, 1.69±0.09 m, 54.5±9.5 kg). The participants attended two sessions with identical experimental procedures, with an interval of 48 hours between them. The skin sensitivity of the right foot sole was assessed using the TPD test.
