New Pineapple Somaclonal Variants: P3R5 and Dwarf  [PDF]

Abstract: The Food and Agriculture Organization has highlighted pineapple as one of the most important tropical fruits. Since classical pineapple breeding is difficult, biotechnology has emerged as an attractive instrument. We obtained two new pineapple somaclonal variants derived from in vitro culture of cv. Red Spanish Pinar: P3R5 and Dwarf. The AFLP analysis revealed an existing genetic distance. So far 44 phenotype indicators selected due to their relation to a wide range of important agricultural, morphological and physiological processes have been evaluated. P3R5 differed from the donor in 19 variables (19/44; 43.18%), while Dwarf varied in 31 indicators (31/44; 70.45%). The number of shoots was significantly different among the three plant materials. Dwarf showed two shoots per plant while P3R5 and the donor did not form any shoots. We also observed that water use efficiency, chlorophyll b concentration, total chlorophyll concentration, transpiration rate, chlorophyll a concentration, thickness of leaf photosynthetic parenchyma, fruit mass with crown, content of free phenolics and superoxide dismutase specific activity were also very different among the three plant materials. The Euclidean distances of each somaclonal variant to the donor plant material taking into consideration the genotype (AFLP) and the phenotype evaluations were also calculated. Regarding the genotype information, P3R5 is separated from cv. Red Spanish Pinar by 2.83 units of Euclidean distance, and Dwarf by 3.00 units. However, the phenotype indicators revealed higher differences: 3.74 in P3R5 and 4.71 in Dwarf. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a comprehensive analysis of pineapple somaclonal variants.

Abstract: This study aimed to estimate genetic parameters of Turiaçu pineapple clones using mixed models; and estimate genetic correlation coefficient between traits, to provide important information to breeding programs. For this, 19 pineapple plants were visually selected and its slips were collected and planted in a single environment and nine traits were evaluated. The genetic parameters of most evaluated traits presented significant differences between the 19 clones. Some traits, such as Fusarium wilt resistance, showed high magnitudes of heritability. Clones did not differ in relation to total titratable acidity (TTA) and total soluble solids (TSS). However, these traits, which have implications to fruit quality, showed to be negatively correlated to fruit mass (-0.46 and -0.67). The results indicate that the population of Turiaçu pineapple is suitable for selection, especially for Fusarium wilt resistance. Also, Turiaçu clones can be used in breeding programs of pineapple.

Abstract: informations about fertilization and mineral nutrition of the new fusariosis-resistant pineapple cultivars are still scarce, despite the importance of this crop. the purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of increasing doses of n on fruit yield and quality of the pineapple cultivar 'vitória' grown on a 'humilúvico espodossolo' in the region of tabuleiros costeiros, in the state of paraíba. the experiment was arranged in a randomized block design, using five n doses (100, 200, 300, 500 and 600 kg ha-1n, as urea) applied 60, 180 and 270 days after planting (dap) with three replications. the following variables were evaluated: length and fresh matter of the 'd' leaf; contents of n, p and k in the portions with and without chlorophyll, 300 and 420 dap; average weight, yield, physical properties (fruit weight, length and medium diameter; crown weight and length) and chemical properties (ph, soluble solids -ss, titrable acidity - at, and the ss/at ratio) of the fruits at harvest. increasing n doses linearly increased length and fresh matter of the 'd' leaf and n content and decrease both p and k contents of the chlorophyll portion 300 dap, but did not affect nutrient contents 420 dap; in the chlorophyll-free portion. increasing n doses, also, led to an increase in k contents 320 dap, but to reductions 420 dap. individual fruit weight and total yield increased with increasing n doses, as maximum values of 1.0 kg and 37.9 t ha-1 were estimated at doses of 409.0 and 439.0 kg ha-1 n, respectively. the n doses did not affect the fruit quality properties, which were compatible with the characteristics described for this cultivar.
Varia??o de caracteres em híbridos de abacaxizeiro obtidos de diferentes cruzamentos

Abstract: the inheritance of traits used for the selection of pineapple hybrids is very important for the success of the genetic breeding program of this fruit crop. the objective of the present work was to analyze the variations observed in main traits used for the selection of pineapple hybrids obtained by different crosses. the analysis of variance for 446 evaluated and 213 selected genotypes was carried out for the following traits: plant height from soil to the base of the fruit, peduncle length, weight of the fruit without the crown, weight of the crown, total soluble solids content and titrable acidity. in general, it was observed that fruit weight decreased for the selected hybrids in most crosses and the total soluble solids content increased in all crosses. positive and significant simple linear correlation was observed between fruit weight and plant height. also a positive significant simple linear correlation was observed between fruit weight and crown weight, however with lower magnitude, plant height and crown weight, plant height and total soluble solids content, and negative, between total soluble solids content and peduncle length. the difference between the crosses in the selection of pineapple genotypes for the traits studied was verified.

Abstract: the ex-vitro propagation of the pineapple plant cv smooth cayenne was evaluated using the stem sections treated with giberelic acid (ga3) and 6 benzylaminopurine (bap). the design utilized was the fractionated factorial of the type (1/5)53 with sizes of stem sections, ga3, bap and five levels totalizing 25 treatments that consisted of the combination of different length of section (6, 8, 10, 12 and 14 cm) and concentrations (0, 100, 200, 300 and 400 mg l-1) of ga3 and bap. each plot consisted of 50 sections treated through immersion for one minute in solutions containing different combinations of ga3 e bap concentrations. bap had positive and ga3 negative effect on the percentage of buds sprouting in stem sections at 28 days after planting. the section size, ga3 and bap application affected the number of buds sprouting per stem section. it was verified the effect on the following characteristics: shoot height, fresh and dry weight of the seedlings and dry weight of root evaluated 123 days after being planted in answer of the section size, ga3 and bap. however, only stem section size presented a positive effect. the highest values of fresh and dry weight of the seedlings were obtained without bap and ga3 in stem sections of 14 cm long.

Abstract: the experiment was carried out in a greenhouse, in the centro de ciências agrárias da universidade federal do espírito santo, located in alegre city, brazil. the work had as objective to evaluate the foliar and radicular growth of micropropagated plantlets of the pineapple cv. gold [ananas comosus (l.) merrill] in phase of the acclimatation. the experiment was set up in arrangement of split plot, being evaluated the growth of that genotype in 5 different ages of retreat of the greenhouse of pre-acclimatation: 0; 1; 2; 3 and 4 months and the witness that stayed there for 5 months, consisting in plots and evaluations to the: 0; 30; 60; 90; 120 and 150 days after transplanted, forming the subplots. it was observed that in the conditions of the experiment the micropropagated plantlets can be removed of the greenhouse with 1 and 2 months of pre-acclimatization.

Abstract: the research for new techniques of in vitro cultivation is being object of many studies around the world, in order to optimize and decrease production costs of seedlings with agronomical interest. the main goal of this work was to compare different systems of in vitro cultivations using ananas comosus l. merril. so, the in vitro growth of the plantlets was promoted in two different bioreactors: bioreactor of immersion by bubbles (b.i.b.?) and the reactor of temporary immersion (r.i.t.a.?) with immersion cycle every 2 hours for 15 minutes and the traditional system in flasks with 200 ml. all cultivation systems used the ms liquid nutritive solution, supplemented with bap (1 mgl-1), ana (0.25 mgl-1), sucrose (30 gl-1) and tween 20? (0.5 μl). the ph was adjusted to 5.8 and sterilized at 120°c for 15 minutes. the cultures were kept into a growth room during 30 days, with controlled temperature of 25±2°c, under white cold light (46.8 μmol.m-2.s-1), with photoperiod of 16 hours. the experimental design used was randomized, with three treatments, three repetitions and ten plants each stage. among the evaluated systems, the bib? presented the best results for the tested variables, mainly the total number of shoots, being 2.3 e 3.1 times superior when compared with the system r.i.t.a.? and the traditional consecutively. so the system of immersion by bubbles turns into an effective equipment to produce seedlings of pineapple in large scale.

Abstract: regardless a relatively low water needs, pineapple fruit has a variable behavior related to water need throughout its biological cycle depending on the development stage. the objective of this work was to analyze irrigation on the vegetative development and fruits yield in pineapple cv. pérola. the experiment was conducted at the universidade federal de sergipe experimental station, at s?o cristóv?o - se (11°01's, 37°12'w), in a randomized block design, with four water level treatments as follow: 100% of class-a (523.7mm ano-1) evaporation pan; 75% of class-a (392.8mm ano-1) evaporation pan, 50% of class-a (261.8mm ano-1) evaporation pan and 0% of class-a evaporation pan, in six replications and twelve plants per plot. the splinkler watering system of irrigation was installed in a line, with an operating pression of 20 mca and a sprinkler dischrage of 1.33m3h-1. a minimum leaf area of 4552.6cm2 was observed, considering a water level of 122.9mm year-1, while a leaf dry matter was 147.6 g in 17mmyear-1. the maximum leaf length (d) of 88.9cm was estimated considering 532.7mmyear-1. the maximum fruit length of 23cm was observed, considering a water level of 296.9mmyear-1. the maximum estimated fruit weight was 1.736g in a water level of 356.4mm year-1. the irrigation seems to contribute in a positive way to the vegetative development in the pineapple fruit yield. it is important to mention that it could be observed a net profit of r$ 1,161.17 ha-1, when a water level of 356.4mm ano-1 of irrigation was adopted.

Abstract: in the present work the sensory modifications in the pineapple's four ripeness stages during room temperature storage were evaluated. every two days, appearance, smell, flavor, and texture of the pineapple in the ripeness stages, "green", "spotted", "colored" and "yellow" obtained from ceagesp (s?o paulo state, brazil) and stored at room temperature (23.4 ± 1.7 °c; 70% rh) were evaluated for 6 days. the ripeness stages influenced the pineapple sensory quality negatively reaching the highest values in the quality in the "spotted" and "colored" stages.

Abstract: the objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of different planting densities and two irrigation levels on the fruit quality and productivity of pineapple (ananas comosus (l.) merril). a randomized block experimental design was used with six planting densities and two irrigation levels, with five replicates. fruit weight, firmness, and juice yield were evaluated. the diameters of the fruit and of the stalk were also measured. the primary fruit, ratoon fruit, and the total fruit yield were calculated. the increase in planting density caused a decrease in the average fruit weight, diameter of the fruit and of the stalk, juice yield, and primary crop. however, plant density did not affect fruit firmness. the higher irrigation rate did not influence the fruit weight average, the diameter of the fruit and of the stem, or the primary crop, but did cause a decrease in fruit firmness and juice yield in the 35,714 and 71,429 plants ha-1 populations. the total fruit productivity increased with plant density and was not influenced by irrigation rate.
