Journal of Biomaterials and Nanobiotechnology (JBNB) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/jbnb.2015.61002
Abstract: The poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid), known as PLGA, is one of the main bioreabsorbable polymers used in the field of medicine today. This copolymer is widely applied in sutures, devices geared toward the controlled release of medication, and the guided regeneration of bone tissue as it presents a short degradation time. This work aimed to synthesize the 82/18 PLGA (expressed by the mass ratio of D,L-lactide and glycolide, respectively), to characterize and study the in Vitro degradation in the form of rods in phosphate buffer solution (PBS). The copolymer was synthesized by opening the cyclic dimer rings of the monomers D,L-lactide and glycolide, in the presence of the tin octanoate initiator and of the lauryl alcohol co-initiator. The characterization of the copolymer and the follow-up of its in vitro degradation were studied using: Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Thermogravimetry (TG), Infrared Molecular Absorption Spectroscopy with Fourier Transform (FTIR), Rheometry, and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Through these characterization techniques, it was possible to obtain the glass transition temperature, thermal stability, chemical composition, morphology, and molar mass of both the synthesized and the degraded copolymer. The molar mass of the synthesized copolymer was, approximately, 106 g·mol-1. The degradation rate of PLGA significantly increased from the 19th to the 28th day in PBS. After 28 days in PBS, the glass transition temperature and the molar mass reduced from 45°C to 17°C and from 1.5 × 106 g·mol-1 to 7.5 × 10g·mol

Journal of Parasitology Research , 2013, DOI: 10.1155/2013/430413
Abstract: Canis familiaris is a domestic animal which plays an important role as a pet; however, it is very likely to develop diseases characterized by high morbidity and mortality. In this sense, there are some Ancylostomatidae species that can lead to anemia, weight loss, and abdominal pain. Therefore, the treatment with allopathic drugs is essential for eliminating the parasitism. However, the increasing occurrence of resistance to allopathic treatments stimulates the search for new therapeutic inputs, among which the probiotics stand out and are able to positively alter the intestinal microbiota and exert immunomodulatory effect. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the applicability of using species of Lactobacillus (L. acidophilus ATCC 4536, L. plantarum ATCC 8014, and L. delbrueckii UFV H2B20) to control canine ancylostomiasis. A probiotic preparation containing 1?×?106 CFU of each strain was administered to 10 naturally infected animals, on alternate days for 28 days. It was observed that the treatment with the probiotic preparation led to a significant reduction in EPG of feces (88.83%/ ), as well as an increase in leukocyte and lymphocyte counts, highlighting the potential use of Lactobacillus species in the control of canine ancylostomiasis. 1. Introduction Pets, especially domestic dogs, provide significant benefits to individuals and to society, since they can contribute to physical, social, and emotional development of children and the wellbeing of their owners; however, hygiene and dietary habits of the animals make them particularly prone to having a range of infectious diseases during their life [1, 2]. In this sense, especially the hookworms and the fact that they are identified as the most prevalent in these animals, as demonstrated in several parasitological surveys in Brazil and in the world [3–8]. The hookworms may cause intestinal disorders in dogs, leading to manifestation of symptoms such as anemia, weight loss, irritability, and abdominal pain and even result in death. They are also able to trigger pathological processes in humans such as cutaneous larva migrans and eosinophilic enteritis [9]. One of the most important steps to control hookworm is the adoption of antiparasitic treatment of infected dogs. However, despite the widespread availability of allopathic drugs for this purpose, there is a clear difficulty in decreasing the prevalence of this parasite in canine host [10]. Such issue can be attributed mainly to poor hygienic and alimentary habits of these animals and to the high environmental contamination. It is possible

Abstract:

Displacement of the non-reduction disk with limitation of opening (DDwLO) can be treatment of the non-surgical form. However, it required scientific and clinic knowledge of diagnostic area of the disorders temporomandibulares. This study was performed with the patient CN, 18 years, white, female, who went to the orofacial pain ambulatory with complaints of extreme pain on the right temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and limitation of maximum opening of 29 mm with shift to right, which she has been suffering for at least three years. After a criterion anamnese the diagnosis hypothesis found was a displacement of the non-reduction disk with limitation of opening. The treatment was based on infiltration in the right TMJ with anesthesic followed by mandibular manipulation. After the therapeutic conduct the patient presented clinical signals of normality with absence of trismus and mandibular movement without shift to right. The patient was followed up during five years not presenting return of the pathology.

Abstract: the aim of this study was to characterize the evolution of the main harvest time indicators suggested to mango fruit (mangifera indica l.), during growth and maturation, at the s?o francisco river valley conditions. at the fruit set stage, forty-eight plants uniformly distributed on four rows were selected from a commercial orchard. from these plants, six hundred fruits were selected at the development stage known as "egg" (40 mm of diameter), which were verified at 52 days after fruit set (dafs). periodically, until the complete ripening on the plant, fruit samples were collected, corresponding to their age, at 52, 64, 72, 83, 92, 99, 106, 113, 120, 125, 128, 133, and 139 dafs. the experimental design was completely randomized, with 13 treatments (age of fruits) and four replications constituted by ten fruits. changes on the pulp color from 99 dafs on and on firmness were the indicators which offered the best characterization of the beginning of maturation on mango fruits and they should be accompanied by fruit sampling on the field. changes on the titratable acidity and on the contents of soluble solids (ss) and total pulp carotenoids were also indicative of the maturity evolution. the pulp of ripe mango fruit showed maximum ss content and ascorbic acid and total carotenoids contents lower than those of fruits at the beginning of maturation.

Abstract: in this work, we demonstrate analytical and numerically the relation between two methods, trappey et al. (1988) and xu (1989), found in the literature. these methods were developed to solve nonlinear programming problems with uncertainties in the set of constraints. a comparative analysis of the performance between classic and fuzzy nonlinear optimization methods are presented too in the work. for the comparison, two problems are modeled that had been shaped in terms of classic nonlinear programming, which allow the introduction of uncertainties in its formularizations. based on the analysis of the problem proposed in xu (1989), we verified that the two described methods provide similar results, as per some conditions.
Antonin Artaud: Tratamento cruel ou cirugia ontológica?
Wilson Pinto Coêlho
Utopia y Praxis Latinoamericana , 2002,

Sensors , 2012, DOI: 10.3390/s120303438
Abstract: We present two configurations of an amplified fiber-optic-based corrosion sensor using the optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) technique as the interrogation method. The sensor system is multipoint, self-referenced, has no moving parts and can measure the corrosion rate several kilometers away from the OTDR equipment. The first OTDR monitoring system employs a remotely pumped in-line EDFA and it is used to evaluate the increase in system reach compared to a non-amplified configuration. The other amplified monitoring system uses an EDFA in booster configuration and we perform corrosion measurements and evaluations of system sensitivity to amplifier gain variations. Our experimental results obtained under controlled laboratory conditions show the advantages of the amplified system in terms of longer system reach with better spatial resolution, and also that the corrosion measurements obtained from our system are not sensitive to 3 dB gain variations.
