Abstract: a cross-sectional descriptive study of 340 persons assigned to two groups, with and without family history of diabetes mellitus type 2 (dm2), was carried out. the objective was to detect whether those persons with family history of dm2 had more hyperinsulemia, metabolic syndrome, associated cardiovascular risk factors and target organ lesions, expressed in left ventricle hypertrophy, than subjects without diabetes family history. the result was that hyperinsulemia was present in 96 patients with family history of dm2 (56,5 %) and significance level of p= 0,001. metabolic syndrome was more frequent in subjects with family history of dm2 (90) for 52,9 % of cases and p= 0,000. hypertriglyceridemia was both the most noticeable marker of the metabolic syndrome and the most statistically significant risk factor in subjects with family history of dm2 (96 , 52,9 % of cases and p= 0,000). left ventricle hypertrophy was associated as target organ lesion expression to subjects with family history of dm2 (36: 21,2 % and p=0,043). it was concluded that subjects with family history of dm2 are more likely to have hyperinsulinemia, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular risk factors and target organ lesions than those persons without such a family history of dm2.
Increased expression levels of the pvcrt-o and pvmdr1 genes in a patient with severe Plasmodium vivax malaria

Malaria Journal , 2009, DOI: 10.1186/1475-2875-8-55
Abstract: Two different patients presented at the Hospital Clinic in Barcelona with P. vivax malaria episodes. One patient had severe symptoms and the other mild symptoms. Both patients traveled through the Brazilian Amazon (Manaus) in 2007. For both patients the current diagnosis of malaria was the first. Two other patients with mild symptoms presented to the "Centro de Pesquisa em Medicina Tropical", also in the Brazilian Amazon (Rond?nia) in 2000.To exclude the possibility that the patient's severe symptoms were due to Plasmodium falciparum, a nested PCR was performed. A magnetic method was used to purify P. vivax free of human leukocytes. Quantitative real-time PCR was performed to compare the transcript levels of two main transporters likely to be involved in chloroquine resistance in P. vivax, namely the P. vivax chloroquine resistance transporter, pvcrt-o, and the P. vivax multidrug resistance transporter, pvmdr 1.Results demonstrated that the severe clinical symptoms were exclusively due to P. vivax. The patient presented acute respiratory conditions requiring admission to the intensive care unit. The magnetic method showed highly purified infected-reticulocytes with mature stages. In addition, it was found that parasites obtained from the severe patient had up to 2.9-fold increase in pvmdr1 levels and up to 21.9-fold increase in pvcrt-o levels compared to expression levels of parasites from the other patients with mild symptoms. This is the first clinical case of severe disease exclusively associated with vivax malaria in Spain. Moreover, these findings suggest that clinical severity could be associated with increased expression levels of parasite genes likely involved in chloroquine resistance. It is necessary to further explore the potential of pvmdr1 and particularly pvcrt-o expression levels as molecular markers of severe disease in P. vivax. The renewed momentum for global malaria eradication has highlighted the need to further studies on Plasmodium vivax if eradi

4 cases of cyst papillary carcinoma in a period of 4 years were presented. All of them underwent physical examination. A firm cervical mass was found in the anterior side of the neck and cervical adenopathies were palpated in 2 of them. Imaging techniques (cervical echography and thyroid gammagram) were applied. The study was completed with FNAB, which had a diagnostic value in 75 % of the cases. An anatomopathological study of all the pieces obtained was conducted. Resection of the cyst and intraoperatory biopsy were performed. In those cases with confirmed diagnosis of cyst papillary carcinoma, total thyroidectomy was carried out and, if necessary, lymphadenectomy. The treatment was concluded with I131 at ablative doses and TSH -supressing hormonal treatment. The role of FNAB in the preoperative study was stressed.

Abstract: During the first year of life, children develop a double-faced emotional tie with their parents or caregivers that provide them the essential confidence to approach psychological and social competences. This special link is called attachment.Attachment may be modified by different situations like the absence of an appropriate person to make tie, the absence of an identification through physical care are assured or the impossibility to assure the child psychical and emotional care (due to depression, psychosis, interest failing or any other wide range of subjects). So, during the first year of life, children may suffer from several kinds of disorders.According to DSM-IV-CR, Pervasive Developmental Disorder is characterized by difficulties in social relations, imaginative activities and verbal and nonverbal communication as well as reduced and repetitive interests. This work aims to decreasing anxiety and improving attachment between children with PDD and their mothers through the infantile massage. Establishing a program that involves 5 sessions of 90 minutes each, with theoretical and practical information about infantile massage, crying, birth, life changes, different roles, feelings of guilt, etcetera. Thanks to it, children with PDD get a quantitative and qualitative improvement of attachment that gets them closer to the external world, reduces their anxiety for changes and allows them a better adaptation to life.

Agricultural Sciences (AS) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/as.2012.34069
Abstract: To evaluate the potential of barley for the phytoremediation of soils contaminated by metals, we conducted a growth chamber experiment with plants exposed to various concentrations of Zn, Cd and Cr. Growth parameters, chlorophyll content and chlorophyll fluorescence were measured at 15 and 29 days after treatment application, and the metal concentration in the aerial part of the plant, the root and the soil was also measured. In all cases, the amount of metal accumulated in the plant increased by increasing the concentration of the applied metal, and the roots accumulated more metal than did the aerial part of the plant. The amount of Cr found in the soil was significantly lower than that of Cd and Zn. The toxic effect of Zn and Cd on the plant was low, affecting growth only at the highest concentrations. For Zn and Cd at the concentrations used, the decrease in water content was 14% compared with the control and 26% for Cr. For plants treated with the highest metal concentrations, the most significant differences were found in chlorophyll content, which had the lowest values compared with the control (23% for Zn, and 42% for Cd and Cr), and in chlorophyll fluorescence (2% for Zn, 23% for Cd and 29% for Cr). These decreases occurred 29 days after applying the Zn and Cd treatments. In plants treated with Cr, the decrease occurred 15 days after treatment application. Under our experimental conditions, barley is more tolerant to Zn and Cd than to Cr.

Abstract: over the last several decades, rising unemployment and low salaries have caused many to blame "the others" for the crisis, fostering a negative attitude in the population toward outsiders. in this situation, the immigrant is seen as a threat, an illegitimate appropriator of the few social resources still available. this study approaches the construction of "the other" as inferior and stigmatic, using the point of view from social theories of learning. the methodology was a qualitative study of a biographical account without a complete sequence, using the sample randomly. the ancestors of our subject come from the pre-incaic culture, the huancas (from which his fictitious name, wanca, was derived). he is a student from huancayo, peru: olive-colored skin, short height, protruding cheeks and dark hair. her account reveals the construction of cultural and racial stereotypes in the university space, showing as well how these stereotypes are attributable to certain situations. in addition, studying the stigmatization of the immigrant facilitates an analysis of the modes of exclusion of other social groups due to their poverty, lack of education, or age.

MediSur , 2005,
Abstract: In this work a historic análisis is made about the teaching of Medicine in Cuba, since its beguining back in 1726 until present days, that is why the study has three stages: Colony, Neocolony, and Revolution, with the aim of carrying out a hystorical reflection on the formation of the physician in Cuba. We use history as a methodological criterium, but it is interesting to highlight the evolution of practical and political ideas that mark the tendencies and regularities of the process in question.
