Mastozoolog?-a neotropical , 2008,

International Journal of Clinical and Health Psychology , 2008,

Mastozoolog?-a neotropical , 2008,
Abstract: a descriptive study was carried out to determine the ectoparasitic fauna of the common vampire bat desmodus rotundus (chiroptera: phyllostomidae) from twelve locations and eight different life zones in costa rica. the biogeographic trends of ectoparasites were described using geographical information systems. a total of sixty seven bats were collected using mist nets and submitted for necropsy. two species of batflies (diptera: streblidae) were identified: trichobius parasiticus (82.14%) and strebla wiedemanni (4.05%), as well as two species of mites: radfordiella desmodi (13.57%) (acarina: macronyssidae) and periglischrus herrerai (0.24%) (acarina: spinturnicidae). the highest percentages of infestation were given by t. parasiticus (91.04%) and r. desmodi (19.40%), with an intensity of infestation of 5.65 and 4.38 per bat, respectively. t. parasiticus was the species which was most frequently found infesting vampire bats in their natural habitat; it seems to be the ectoparasite with the widest geographic and ecologic distribution. additionally new geographical distribution for t. parasiticus and s. wiedemanni are proposed. humidity, altitude, and average environmental temperature could be factors that influenced the biogeography of the ectoparasitic species found. the finding of radfordiella desmodi and periglischrus herrerai are the first reports of these mites for costa rica.
Increase of a Calcium Independent Transglutaminase Activity in the Erythrocyte during the Infection with Plasmodium falciparum

Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 1999, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02761999000100019
Abstract: we have studied the activity of a calcium dependent transglutaminase (ec 2.3.2.13) during the growth of the parasite plasmodium falciparum inside the infected human erythrocyte. there is only one detectable transglutaminase in the two-cell-system, and its origin is erythrocytic. no activity was detected in preparations of the parasite devoid of erythrocyte cytoplasm. the michaelis menten constants (km) of the enzyme for the substrates n'n'dimethylcaseine and putrescine were undistinguishable whether the cell extracts used in their determination were obtained from normal or from infected red cells. the total activity of transglutaminase in stringently synchronized cultures, measured at 0.5mm ca2+, decreased with the maturation of the parasite. however, a fraction which became irreversibly activated and independent of calcium concentration was detected. the proportion of this fraction grew with maturation; it represented only 20% of the activity in 20 hr-old-trophozoites while in 48-hr-schizonts it was more than 85% of the total activity. the activation of this fraction of transglutaminase did not depend on an increase in the erythrocyte cytoplasmic calcium, since most of the calcium was shown to be located in the parasite.

Status and conservation of coral reefs in Costa Rica
Cortés,Jorge; Jiménez,Carlos E; Fonseca,Ana C; Alvarado,Juan José;
Revista de Biología Tropical , 2010,
Abstract: costa rica has coral communities and reefs on the caribbean coast and on the pacific along the coast and off-shore islands. the southern section of the caribbean coast has fringing and patch reefs, carbonate banks, and an incipient algal ridge. the pacific coast has coral communities, reefs and isolated coral colonies. coral reefs have been seriously impacted in the last 30 years, mainly by sediments (caribbean coast and some pacific reefs) and by el ni?o warming events (both coasts). monitoring is being carried out at three sites on each coast. both coasts suffered significant reductions in live coral cover in the 1980’s, but coral cover is now increasing in most sites. the government of costa rica is aware of the importance of coral reefs and marine environments in general, and in recent years decrees have been implemented (or are in the process of approval) to protect them, but limited resources endanger their proper management and conservation, including proper outreach to reef users and the general public. rev. biol. trop. 58 (suppl. 1): 33-50. epub 2010 may 01.

Rev. Biol. Trop. 58 (Suppl. 1): 33-50. Epub 2010 May 01.

Centrocestus formosanus (Opisthorchiida: Heterophyidae) as a cause of death in gray tilapia fry Oreochromis niloticus (Perciforme: Cichlidae) in the dry Pacific of Costa Rica. Centrocestus formosanus is a zoonotic trematode from Asia and has been mainly associated as cause of death of cultured fish. To identify pathogen trematode species in tilapia fry (Oreochromis niloticus) and to determine mollusks hosting these parasites, freshwater mollusks were collected from tilapia cultured ponds and experimental infections were carried out with tilapia fries and different mollusk species. A total of 907 freshwater mollusks were obtained from tilapia ponds and were identified to species level, four gastropods and one bivalve were determined: Melania tuberculata, Melanoides turricula, Pomacea flagellata, Haitia cubensis and Anodontiles luteola. For the first time, the presence of M. turricula and H. cubensis are reported in Costa Rica. Seven morphotypes of cercariae (Xifiodiocercaria, Equinostoma, Oftalmocercaria, Parapleurolofocercus, Cistocerca, Furcocercaria and Leptocercaria) parasitizing all five species of mollusks were found, all of distome type. Experimental exposure of tilapia fry to
