Revista Costarricense de Salud Pública , 2009,
Abstract: objective: to evaluate the condition of children suffering from down syndrome with ages between seven and 14, who went to "national center for special education" during 2007. methods: several processes were evaluated; for example: anthropometric indicators (weight, height, cutaneous skinfolds,) biochemical (basal blood glucose, lipids profile, hemoglobin, hematocrit, thyroidal function,) clinical (revision of medical records and physical exams performed in the medical center). also eating habits, life style and socioeconomic aspects were taken into account. for the last three, we also observed the methods of a semi-structured interview, frequency of food intake; non participant observation of snacks and lunches and direct weighing of the portions served at the center in order to determine its nutritional value. results: 16 children were observed. most of them showed signs of obesity, low consumption of vegetables, high intake of refined flour and foods containing simple carbohydrates (candies and desserts,) saturated fats and cholesterol (processed meats and fried food.) it?s important to mention that 12/15 participants presented hypertriglyceridemia and 11/15 showed a low levels of hdl cholesterol. dditionally, a poor level of physical activity was reported. conclusion: from the nutritional point of view, this investigation is the first approach to the children suffering from down syndrome in costa rica. nevertheless, further analysis and research is necessary in order to generate the nutritional guides that will improve the lifestyle of these children.
Estado nutricional de bailarinas de ballet clásico, area metropolitana de Costa Rica
Madrigal Rojas,Elena; González Urrutia,Ana Rocío;
Revista Costarricense de Salud Pública , 2008,
Abstract: the main objective of the present study was to examine the nutritional status of classic ballet dancers from three of the most important ballet academies located in metropolitan area of costa rica. study participants included twenty-four adult females (18 to 30 years old) of advanced ballet level. threeday food records were collected from each dancer. height, body weight and skin fold measurements were completed. blood samples were collected for biochemical analysis. bone density was measured by dual x-ray energy (hip and lumbar l1, l2, l3, l4). the attitudes, beliefs and risk factors for eating disorders were evaluated by interview and using the eating attitudes test (eat-26) and eating disorder inventory (edi). total energy intake (1880 kcal/d ± 448.3) was considerably lower than the dietary recommendations and only niacin and vitamin b6 were consumed at optimal levels. bone density, hemoglobin and hematocrit were within normal ranges. the results of the present study suggest that dancers with body mass index (bmi) ≥ 20 kg/m2 have more hypocaloric diets and major risk of eating disorders. future studies are needed to develop strategies to improve the nutritional status of ballet dancers.

Abstract: fire frequency and severity have increased in different regions of the world. the main causes explaining these new fire patterns would be associated with climate and land-use change. the present contribution briefly examines the recent changes of climate and predictions and their potential influence on fire activity in south-central chile, along with the necessary adaptation measures to cope with this problem. different studies coincide in that main effects of climate change in this area will be associated with lower precipitations which would result in an increment of the occurrence and area affected by forest fires. the major and more urgent challenge is defining the proper policies and strategies of mitigation and adaptation to promote healthy forests (i.e., productive, diverse and resilient), ensuring a continuum provision of ecosystem services under a changing climate.
