Abstract: Introduction: Multidrug resistance (MDR) is one of the major problems of chemotherapy. Overexpression of efflux pumps, such as P-glycoprotein (Pgp), multiple resistance-related protein 1 (MRP-1) and lung resistance protein (LRP) can lead to MDR. Verapamil and L-buthionine-sulfoximine (BSO) are two modulators of these proteins. This study aims to compare 99mTc-Sestamibi transport kinetics in human colorectal adenocarcinoma cell lines, in the presence and absence of the MDR modulators verapamil and BSO. Material and Methods: MDR proteins expression was evaluated in sensitive (WiDr) and resistant (LS1034) human colorectal adenocarcinoma cell lines. Intracellular and plasma membrane Pgp and MRP1, and LRP expression was analyzed by flow-cytometry and western blot. Cellular transport kinetics was assessed using 99mTc-Sestamibi. MDR modulation was evaluated though retention studies in resistant cells after incubation with the modulators. Results: Pgp expression was significantly higher (p≤0.001) in resistant cells. These results were confirmed by western blot analysis. 99mTc-Sestamibi uptake and retention percentage were significantly higher (p<0.001 and p<0.01, respectively) in the sensitive cells for all time-points considered. In resistant cells there were no significant differences when we consider the curves as a whole, considering cells incubated versus non-incubated with MDR modulators. However, for the first minutes after incubation with 99mTc-Sestamibi, there were differences among the MDR modulators used (p<0.05). Conclusions: In vitro kinetic studies using 99mTc-Sestamibi could indicate MDR phenotype in colorectal adenocarcinoma cells. As the modulators used showed a reversion of the retention profile only for the first minutes, their administration should occur immediately before the administration of cytotoxic drugs.

Estudos de Psicologia (Campinas) , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-166X2008000100008
Abstract: this research aimed to evaluate the role exercised by families of adolescents experiencing the process of institutionalization/deinstitutionalization, in an entity in the city of uberaba, minas gerais. it studied five families who had regained custody of their children. the materials used to collect the data included semi-structured interviews with the parent(s), the adolescents themselves and the director of the institution; socioeconomic identification records; examination of the institution's record books; adolescents' information files; research field diaries. the results showed multifactorial reasons for the sheltering, associated with poverty, lack of socio-psychological family support from the community health centers, absence of the father figure and a poor family structure. the sheltering period was painful for both children and parents. the work of the institutions involved, the adolescents' desire to leave the institution and the financial restructuring of their families helped with the process of deinstitutionalization. however, the study showed the need for subsequent multi-professional monitoring.

Comportamento Organizacional e Gest?o , 2006,
Abstract: the main goal of this research is to develop and validate a new multi-factor scale of working motivation for the portuguese population. the lack of motivation measuring instruments lead to the development and elaboration of this motivation scale. it includes 28 items resulting from a theoretical research project in motivational theories. the validation study was obtained from a sample of 444 workers from hi-tech enterprises of both sexes and with ages between 19 and 34 years. results show high levels of internal consistence (reliability scores between 0,72 and 0,84) and a factorial analysis which revealed a tetrafactorial structure with 49% of explained variance: work structure motivation, achievement and power motivation, commitment motivation and goal-setting motivation. it is hope that future approaches and studies may result from this new factorial scale of motivation.

Análise Psicológica , 2007,
Abstract: the aim of this study is to correlate the personality factors and eating behaviour in women diagnosed with morbid obesity. the 48 patients are candidates to bariatric surgery, or that have made it in a near past. the instruments used along this investigation were: sample characterization questionnaire, the personality inventory neo revised and the dutch eating behaviour questionnaire (debq). the results showed the extremely significant statistical value in the dimensions neuroticism and openness, and in the facets impulsiveness, assertiveness, fantasy, feelings, ideas, values, altruism, competence and deliberation; and in the restrained eating and emotional eating dimen-sions. we registered the presence of inadequate feelings with maladaptative coping responses with a low frustration tolerance; characteristics of dominance in the social relations; creativity with the elaboration of fantasies and the presence of situational emotional responses; altruistic behaviour, self-discipline and planning; with an emotional ingestion associated to characteristics of restrained eating. we highlight the importance of psychotherapy during illness process.
O mito da serpente em D. H. Lawrence = The serpent myth in D. H. Lawrence
Ana Maria Leal Cardoso
Acta Scientiarum : Language and Culture , 2008,
This paper proposes a study on the myth of the serpent in D. H. Lawrence’s The Plumed Serpent, based on Joseph Campbell’s mythical map of the hero’s journey and Jungian criticism. Kate, the femaleprotagonist, embarks on a quest for spiritual-psychological rebirth in the primitive lands of Mexico. Following the pattern of Jung’s individuation process and exploring many recurrent symbols in the narrative, we intend to show how Kate faces ruptures anduncertainties as her consciousness is getting into a process of expansion. According to our analysis, the serpent illustrates the Self’s paradoxical aspect, representing both the viper sideof the human being as well as its knowledge.
