A Rare Case of Tarceva Resulting in Tympanic Membrane Necrosis  [PDF]
Michele M. Gandolfi, Ana H. Kim
International Journal of Otolaryngology and Head & Neck Surgery (IJOHNS) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ijohns.2013.24029

Objective: To report a novel case of Tarceva? treatment for small cell lung carcinoma resulting in tympanic membrane necrosis. Patient: A 49-year-old male with tympanic membrane necrosis and presumed resistant acute otitis externa and chronic inflammation of the left ear. Patient is status post chemotherapy and radiation diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer in December 2008 with on-going therapy with Tarceva? for residual disease. Intervention: Tympanoplasty of left ear. Results: Improvement of symptoms of irritation and improvement of hearing and speech reception thresholds. All acid fast bacilli, fungal and bacterial cultures of the intra-op specimen were negative. Conclusions: The possibility that long term Tarceva? therapy could have caused the tympanic membrane necrosis and acute otitis media like symptoms is feasible since Tarceva?

Assessment and Monitoring Damage by Coraebus florentinus (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) in Mediterranean Oak Forests  [PDF]
Ana M. Cárdenas, Patricia Gallardo
Open Journal of Ecology (OJE) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/oje.2018.85020
Abstract: Coraebus florentinus (Herbst) is a wood borer beetle that damages the most abundant Quercus species making up the Mediterranean forests. Damage is due to the feeding activity of the larvae which cuts the sap flow into the branch where it develops, drying it. In the last decades, the geographical range and the damage records of this species have expanded northwardly as a result of the climate global change since warmer conditions favor higher reproduction and quicker development of this species. On this paper, historical series of data after ten years evaluating damages by C. florentinus in Hornachuelos Natural Park (Southern Spain) are analyzed under the perspective of the environmental temperature increase linked to the global climate change. The assessment was done between 2007 and 2017, in two sampling plots of Mediterranean mixed-oak forests where holm and cork oaks are the predominant tree species. Results show that the infestation levels of this species at the beginning of the assessment period were higher than those described previously in the nineties and that they increased progressively during the monitoring time. The results also agree with the expansion of its distribution areas noticed in other areas of Europe. The foreseeable rising of damages of C. florentinus is discussed, at greater scale, under the perspective of future scenery of environmental warming and oaks decaying by losing fitness due to higher soil aridity.
Emotional Intelligence and Quality of Working Life at Federal Institutions of Higher Education in Brazil  [PDF]
Ana Alice Vilas Boas, Estelle M. Morin
Open Journal of Social Sciences (JSS) , 2019, DOI: 10.4236/jss.2019.72020
Abstract: People have prioritized even more the quality of life in the most diverse places of work. Quality of Working Life (QWL) can be analyzed from some indicators and factors that help to evaluate the workplace and the people who work on it. In addition, the personal characteristics also interfere in the QWL perception level. In this context, in this article, the objective is to analyze the emotional intelligence (EI) and Quality of Working Life factors in the professors’ work at federal institutions of higher education in Brazil. The data were collected by a questionnaire composed of scales to identify some variables of individual differences and QWL factors. The survey instrument was sent via Survey Monkey to university professors from 16 federal higher education institutions in the Southeast, Midwest, and Federal District. Once downloaded, the data were analyzed using SPSS software version 21. After the analysis, it is realized that EI can be analyzed from five components: well-being, self-control, emotionality, sociability and emotions recognition. It was observed that there are significant correlations between Emotional Intelligence and QWL factors. Furthermore, there are significant relations between the life events, EI and QWL factors.
Obesity: Nutrition and Genetics—A Short Narrative Review  [PDF]
José M. Tallon, Janine Narciso, Ana Barros, Ana Pereira, Aldo M. Costa, António J. Silva
Health (Health) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/health.2018.1012134
Abstract: Obesity has become a major global health challenge and it is a risk factor for the development of several comorbid conditions. Additionally, obesity has considerable economic consequences. Obesity is a multifactorial condition that arises from independent influences of genetic and social-environmental factors on food intake and physical activity. It has been difficult to establish clear associations between weight status and the intake of single foods or food groups. In most people, the predisposition to obesity has a polygenic basis, which means that obesity will develop if an individual has several polygenic variants that increase body weight. The FTO gene was the first GWAS-identified obesity-susceptibility gene and since then other polygenic variants that are associated with BMI and dietary intake have also been identified. However, this is still an active area of research as more polygenetic variants await discovery.
Actitudes del consumidor después de elegir un producto equivocado
Arboleda Arango,Ana M.;
Diversitas: Perspectivas en Psicología , 2011,
Abstract: because of consumers' confusion with an over the counter drug, feelings of frustration lead an individual to particular behavioral intentions. consumers' attitude towards confusion is the relationship between their emotions and behavioral intentions (i.e., changing the product, intention to seek for information, and intention to consume). this relationship is analyzed in an experimental setting simulating a wrong decision. results demonstrate that a) emotions due to confusion explain higher intentions to exchange a product and that b) this is then associated with lower intentions of taking a medicine and higher intentions of gathering information.
Modelo sindical y acción política: Las experiencias diferenciales de dos sindicatos del sector eléctrico
Drolas,M. Ana;
Trabajo y sociedad , 2009,
Abstract: this article tries to contribute to the interpretation of the union models and the explanation of its strategies and actions. for it compares the attitude and the behavior of two unions of the electrical sector had against a same event that is the privatizadora attack that ahead took the government in the decade of the 90. the hypothesis is that the political tradition, the relation with the political power and the state and the internal mechanisms of participation, obturate or allow arbitrary driving of the leaderships. in this sense, the characteristics that assume each of these dimensions will give life to tendentially more representative unions or, on the contrary, to tendentially bureaucratic ones. this article is part of an ampler investigation than investigates about the construction of representation in the spaces of work and their impacts on the construction of action strategies.
Ciclos de vida y componentes de la aptitud de Drosophila inca y D. yangana (Diptera, Drosophilidae)
Mafla M., Ana Beatriz;
Iheringia. Série Zoologia , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0073-47212005000100013
Abstract: the life cycles of drosophila inca dobzhansky & pavan, 1943 and d. yangana rafael & vela, 2003 are described and proved to be very similar; the viability observed is different since the mortality in the larval and pupal stages of d. yangana is higher because of inadequate feeding. the mean duration from egg to adult is 22 days at 21-23° c for both species.

Abstract: the sedimentology and depositional architecture of the sequences cropping out in the towns of la jaula and agua del médano, both in the province of mendoza, were analyzed with the purpose of reporting late miocene pedemont dunes in cordillera principal.
Recent advances in chromaffin cell biology: Summing up the last International Symposium on Chromaffin Cell Biology
Biological Research , 2004, DOI: 10.4067/S0716-97602004000100002
Abstract: the international symposium on chromaffin cell biology (isccb) brings together a group of approximately 150 scientists from around the world who meet every 2 years to discuss recent advances in our understanding of biogenesis and motion of secretory vesicles, synthesis, storage and release of secreted products (catecholamines, chromogranins, atp), and mechanisms involving the excitation-secretion coupling, membrane ion channels, intracellular calcium homeostasis and exocytosis. the development of new technologies that allow an accurate measurement of catecholamines, vesicle motion, exocytosis, etc. are also analyzed. the 12th isccb, organized by ricardo borges, took place on september 20-26, 2003, in la palma, canary islands, spain. in this article we describe the most recent and significant contributions to the 12th isccb.
Domacios y nectarios extraflorales en Bignoniáceas: componentes vegetales de una interacción mutualística
Gonzalez,Ana M;
Bolet?-n de la Sociedad Argentina de Bot??nica , 2011,
Abstract: plants have mutualistic relationships with insects in two ways: through domatia provide housing of predators, and extrafloral nectaries secreting nectar and provide food in exchange for control of herbivores or fungal pathogens. the foliar anatomy of 52 species of bignoniaceae was examined by light and scanning electron microscopy, in order to describe the different types of domatia and extrafloral nectaries. two types of domatia were observed: small hair-tufts and pockets; the presence and type of domatia represents important taxonomic characters in bignoniaceae. extrafloral nectaries are found in all studied species. they are located in different positions: along the midvein, associated with domatia, or grouped in glandular fields, either in leaf or interpetiolar. the bignoniaceae have simultaneously domatia and extrafloral nectaries on their leaves, these features are described as plant components in a probable mechanism of indirect defense.
