Delgado,Livan; Vázquez,Ana M; Fernández,Eduardo;
Vaccimonitor , 2012,
Abstract: atherosclerosis represents the first cause of death in the western world. although there are several hypothesis which explain its pathogenesis, one of the most recognized is the autoimmune hypothesis. the activation of the immunological system against different atherogenic stimulus induces a reaction which may affect the vascular endothelium with the consequent atherogenic lesion development. the design of new therapeutic strategies, among them vaccines, represents a tool with promissory result in atherosclerosis treatment. taking into account these antecedents, in the present work it was examined the state of the art on the immunomodulation of this chronic disease.

Anti-ganglioside anti-idiotypic vaccination: more than molecular mimicry
Ana M. H. Vázquez,Nely Rodríguez-Zhurbenko,Ana M. V. López
Frontiers in Oncology , 2012, DOI: 10.3389/fonc.2012.00170
Abstract: Surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy are standard modalities for cancer treatment, but the effectiveness of these treatments has reached a plateau. Thus, other strategies are being explored to combine with the current treatment paradigms in order to reach better clinical results. One of these approaches is the active immunotherapy based on the induction of anti-tumor responses by anti-idiotypic vaccination. This approach arose from Jerne’s idiotypic network theory, which postulates that B lymphocytes forms a functional network, with a role in the establishment of the immune repertoires, in the regulation of natural antibody production and even in the establishment of natural tolerance. Due to the large potential diversity of the immunoglobulin variable regions, the idiotypes repertoire can mimic the universe of self and foreign epitopes, even those of non-protein nature, like gangliosides. Gangliosides are sialic acid-containing glycolipids that have been considered attractive targets for cancer immunotherapy, based on the qualitative and quantitative changes they suffer during malignant transformation and due to their importance for tumor biology. Although any idiotype could be able to mimic any antigen, only those related to antigens involved in functions relevant for organism homeostasis, and that in consequence has been fixed by evolution, would be able not only to mimic, but also to activate the idiotypic cascades related with the nominal antigen. The present review updates the results, failures and hopes, obtained with ganglioside mimicking anti-idiotypic antibodies and presents evidences of the existence of a natural response against gangliosides, suggesting that these glycolipids could be idiotypically relevant antigens.

Abstract: introduction: the increasing aging of society has promoted the existence of a greater interest in understanding the term successful aging. aim: to explore the term successful aging from a holistic perspective. method: a review was conducted in the main databases for the period 2000-2010. the search terms "aging", "successful aging" y "nursing" were combined. results: based on the analysis of the fourteen selected articles the major categories and subcategories of the term successful aging were described. conclusion: it offers a possible definition of successful aging from a holistic perspective, taking into account the multidimensionality, the dynamism and viability of the concept. from this review future studies are proposed.
Hygiene and restraint of pigs is associated with absence of Taenia solium cysticercosis in a rural community of Mexico
Vázquez-Flores,Sonia; Ballesteros-Rodea,Gilberto; Flisser,Ana; Schantz,Peter M.;
Salud Pública de México , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S0036-36342001000600009
Abstract: objective. to determine the prevalence and risk factors associated to pig cysticercosis in a rural community of veracruz, mexico. material and methods. swine cysticercosis was diagnosed by tongue palpation and circulating antibodies in pigs kept in 178 household backyards. risk factors were assessed by interviewing owners to collect information on pig breeding conditions and demographic characteristics. results. none of the 53 pigs studied showed cysts in the tongue, nor antibodies against taenia solium in western blot assays. latrines were available in 91% of the houses and pigs were kept in restrained areas. conclusions. the present study shows that pig breeding under restraint with basic hygiene and sanitary conditions, may be effective and practical interventions to restrain taenia solium in rural communities. the english version of this paper is available too at: http://www.insp.mx/salud/index.html

Gerokomos , 2010,
A series of experiments was made at the Virology Department of the "Pedro Kourí" Institute of Tropical Medicine aimed at obtaining new evidences on the possible antigenic relations existing between the viruses isolated from patients with epidemic neuropathy and the structures of the human nervous system. According to the results it may be finally inferred that the persistance and/or autoimmunity may be considered as mechanisms through which the studied viruses participate in the etiopathogeny of the epidemic neuropathy in Cuba. For future experiments it is very important to identify the possible viral epitopes involved in the mollecular mimicry that are responsible for the probable autoimmune mechanisms or for the viral persistance.
