Abstract: all four species of the faltala oman leafhopper group occurring in argentina, faltala brachyptera oman, f. furcipennis cheng, clorindaia hecaloides linnavuori and c. brasileira zahniser & webb, are reviewed. the female of faltala furcipennis is described for the first time and some additional traits for the male and female genitalia of f. brachyptera, f. furcipennis and clorindaia brasileira are included. a key to identify the four argentinean species, based on male and female genitalia - including the specific differences in microsculpturing of the first valvulae- and the external morphology is presented. further information on the geographical distribution of these grass-specialists is reported and faltala furcipennis and clorindaia brasileira are recorded as new in argentina.

Se tratan las cuatro especies del grupo Faltala Oman, presentes en la Argentina: Faltala brachyptera Oman, F. furcipennis Cheng, Clorindaia hecaloides Linnavuori y C. brasileira Zahniser & Webb. Se describe e ilustra por primera vez la hembra de Faltala furcipennis, se incluyen algunos caracteres adicionales de la genitalia del macho y de la hembra de F. brachyptera, F. furcipennis y Clorindaia brasileira y se establecen patrones morfológicos en la microescultura de las valvas I de las hembras, para su diferenciación interespecífica. A los efectos de facilitar la identificación de las cuatro especies argentinas, se presenta una clave sobre la base de caracteres morfológicos externos y de la genitalia de ambos sexos. Además, se registran Faltala furcipennis y Clorindaia brasileira como nuevas para la fauna Argentina y se adiciona información acerca de la distribución geográfica.

Abstract: El pulgón verde de los cereales, Schizaphis graminum (Rondani), es una de las principales plagas de estos cultivos en el mundo y también presente en Argentina. Si bien el control químico es la práctica más utilizada, el uso de variedades resistentes (uno de los componentes principales del MIP) es la estrategia más efectiva y ambientalmente más amigable para el control de plagas. Dado que las plantas presentan distintos mecanismos que les permiten defenderse de los insectos, el objetivo de este trabajo fue caracterizar la resistencia a Schizaphis graminum en una población de líneas recombinantes de cebada, e identificar aquellas con mejores características, portadoras de genes de resistencia a este insecto. La antixenosis fue analizada por la prueba de libre selección de hospederos. La antibiosis se evaluó por los parámetros del ciclo y el desarrollo del áfido y la tolerancia por características de crecimiento de las plantas bajo infestación. Al menos ocho líneas antibióticas fueron más tolerantes que sus testigos, presentando similares pesos secos, área foliar y contenido de clorofila bajo infestación. Estas líneas portadoras de genes de resistencia pueden ser de utilidad en los planes de mejora de la cebada. Greenbug, Schizaphis graminum (Rondani) is one of the major pests of cereals around the world that is present in Argentina. Chemical control is the most widely used practice; however, the use of resistant varieties, one of the main components in IPM, is the most effective and environmentally sustainable strategy of control. Since plants have different types of insect resistance that allow them to defend against pests, the aim of the current study was to characterize the resistance to Schizaphis graminum in a population of recombinant inbred lines of barley and to identify lines with improved characteristics that enable the development of commercial cultivars. Antixenosis was studied by the host free choice test. Antibiosis was assessed by means of aphid life cycle and developmental traits. Tolerance mechanism was analyzed by plant growth parameters. At least eight lines carrying antibiosis were more tolerant than their controls, with similar dry weight, leaf area and chlorophyll contents, under infestation. These lines could provide resistance genes against this aphid pest and would be useful in plant breeding programs.

Abstract: edwardsiana froggatti (baker, 1925) is a widely distributed species that causes severe damage in fruit growing areas. in this contribution, based on materials from the major apple-producing areas of argentina, its morphological characteristics are re-described and new diagnostic elements of both sexes are considered. additional information on taxonomic history, geographic distribution, biological data and natural enemies is also included.

Abstract: Lacertinella is proposed as a replacement name for Lacertina Remes Lenicov & Rossi Batiz, 2011 junior homonym of Lacertina Meuschen, 1776 (Reptilia). Se propone Lacertinella como nombre de reemplazo para Lacertina Remes Lenicov & Rossi Batiz, 2011, debido a que es homónimo junior de Lacertina Meuschen, 1776 (Reptilia).

Abstract: the immature stages of megamelus bellicus remes lenicov & sosa (hemiptera: delphacidae) are described, keyed and illustrated. the description of each stage was based on 24-h hatched nymphs from the laboratory colony. the main characters that distinguish the various stages are: body size, color, number of tarsomeres, espinulation of the metatibia and number of teeth on the spur; presence of sensoria on antennal pedicel. this insect was reared on pieces of water hyacinth, eichhornia crassipes (martius) solms laubach. biological data based on lab and field observations show that m. bellicus carries out its biological cycle successfully on pontederiaceae. one to nine eggs per scar are laid deeply into the aerenquima of the petiole, being most frequent 3-4, less frequent 5, 2 and 6 and rarely 1, 7 and 9. eulophid wasps aprostocetus (ootetrastichus) sp, known as eggs parasitoid, was registered and quantified. as m. bellicus occupies the same ecological habitat that m. scutellaris berg, we highlighted some morphological and biological aspects that allow their differentiation.
Tagosodes orizicolus: nuevo vector potencial del Mal de Río Cuarto virus

Abstract: an important disease affecting the yield of corn crops is known as mal de río cuarto. delphacodes kuscheli is the most important vector. the objective of this work was to determine the vector capacity of a new species, tagosodes orizicolus, both in the field and under experimental conditions. transmission trials were carried out on both species simultaneously. for acquisition, latency and infection the times considered optimum for d. kuscheli were used. the plants were analyzed by das-elisa. salivary glands of t. orizicolus were observed by electron microscopy. in experimental tests, values of percentages of transmission of 10% for t. orizicolus and 42% for d. kuscheli were obtained. the ultra-fine sections of the salivary glands of t. orizicolus showed the aggregation of viral particles 70 nm in diameter. vectoral capacity could not be proven under natural conditions from a test conducted with insects captured in the field. likewise, for the first time wheat, barley and triticale are mentioned as suitable crops for breeding t. orizicolus. these results show t. orizicolus to be a species of epidemiological interest in the northeast of argentina due to the proven capacity of acquiring and transmitting this viral agent under experimental conditions.

La descripción de cada estadio se realizó sobre la base de ninfas extraidas 24 horas posteriores a la eclosión, de colonias de laboratorio y criadas sobre trozos de hojas de camalote Eichhornia crassipes (Martius) Solms Laubach. Los principales caracteres para distinguir los distintos estadios son: tama o del cuerpo, color, número de tarsómeros, espinulación de la metatibia y número de dientes del calcar y presencia de sensorios en el pedicelo antenal. Datos biológicos basados en observaciones en el laboratorio y en el campo, muestran que M. bellicus realiza su ciclo biológico exitosamente sobre Pontederiaceae. Los huevos, dispuestos de 1 a 9 por postura, son colocados profundamente en el aerénquima del pecíolo; son más frecuentes de 3-4, menos frecuentes 5, 2 y 6, y raramente 1, 7 y 9. Se registra el porcentaje de parasitoidismo de un Hymenoptera oófilo de la familia Eulophidae, Aprostocetus (Ootetrastichus) sp. Debido a que M. bellicus ocupa el mismo hábitat ecológico que M. scutellaris Berg, se resaltan las principales diferencias morfológicas y de comportamiento entre las mismas.
First record of the genus saccharosydne kirkaldy 1907 (hemiptera - fulgoromorpha - delphacidae) in Argentina

Abstract: a new genus, saccharosydne kirkaldy, is reported in argentina. this is the most economically important representative of the tribe saccharosydnini. the geographical distribution of all species and some morphological and biological relevant data of this genus are added. this new record represents the southernmost limit of the tribe in the americas.

Abstract: saccharosydne is the most diverse genus of the tribe saccharosydnini. male, female and nymphal saccharosydne have been captured in recent collections from garlic (allium sativum), rye (secale cereale) and pampas grass (cortaderia spp.) in argentina. in this contribution, we describe and illustrate a new species s. subandina sp. nov., adding information on the geographical distribution and host plants. saccharosydne subandina can be distinguished from its congeners by the following combination of features: uniformly light green-yellowish color with a distinctive rounded black macula on both genae; vertex 1.5x longer than wide, and projecting beyond eyes almost one half of its length; parameres divergent with internal and external angles acute; and dorsolateral angles of pygofer produced caudad. a key for species identification based on male genitalia and external morphology, is provided.
