Abstract: Children with meningomyelocele (MMC) present special needs that require constant family care. We aimed to understand the family perception on the experience with children with MMC. This is a study of qualitative approach carried out with fifteen families from May to June 2008 through semi-structured interviews and non-systematic observations registered in field diary. The categories of analysis were: family daily care of children with meningomyelocele; difficulties in the access to the treatment and follow-up of the disease; and failure in communication. The results show that the needs of children/family extend mainly to physical, psychosocial and financial problems. The dissatisfaction is created by upset in attendance, accessibility and lack of information on the disease. We concluded that in order to minimize the problems provoked by the disease and promote the families’ reception are necessary: interdisciplinary intervention with institutional support; educational actions to improve the care and the quality of life of these patients.

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether history of childhood trauma is associated with loss of functionality in adult women with fibromyalgia (FM). A secondary objective was to assess the presence of differences between depressed and non-depressed adult women with FM in a regression model for functionality. METHODS: A total of 114 adult women with FM according to the American College of Rheumatology diagnostic criteria answered the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire and the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire. All subjects were interviewed by trained psychiatrists and evaluated for depression using the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) - Brazilian version 5.0.0. Correlation and regression models were used to investigate associations between childhood trauma and loss of functionality among patients with FM. The sample was stratified by presence and absence of clinical depression. RESULTS: Overall, childhood trauma was associated with of loss of functionality in adult women with FM. When stratified by depression, the regression model significantly increased the association among non-depressed patients, even after adjustment for age and use of psychotropic medications. CONCLUSIONS: Childhood trauma showed a clinically important association with loss of functionality among adult women with FM. The associations were more pronounced among subjects without comorbid depression.

Abstract: the present study investigates the hypothesis of a specific executive function deficit in children with phenilketonuria (pku) whose phenilalanine level is between 360 and 600 mmol/l. participants were 21 early and continuously treated 9-month-old children with pku and 18 9-month-old controls. the children with pku were divided into two groups on the basis of their mean phenilalanine level prior to the study: the group of children whose level was between 120 and 360 mmol/l, and the group of children whose level was between 360 and 600 mmol/l. although the three groups did not differ with regard to performance on a test of global mental development, the pku children with high phenilalanine performed significantly worse than both the low phenilalanine pku children and the control children on a task that assesses executive functioning.

Abstract: Imidazolidine derivatives, or hydantoins, are synthetic compounds with different therapeutic applications. Many imidazolidine derivatives have psychopharmacological properties, such as phenytoin, famous for its anticonvulsant efficacy, but also effective in the treatment of neuropathic pain. The hydantoin, 3-phenyl-5-(4-ethylphenyl)-imidazolidine-2,4-dione (IM-3), synthesized from the amino acid, glycine, was selected for psychopharmacological studies in mice on the basis of its chemical and structural similarity with phenytoin. The first step of this study was to define the LD 50, which determined the doses of 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg for subsequent tests. The results obtained from the behavioral screening indicated that IM-3 produces decreased ambulation and analgesia in mice. Motor coordination and anxiety behavior were not affected by treatment with IM-3, as observed in the rotarod and elevated plus-maze tests, respectively. Regarding its antinociceptive properties, IM-3 showed efficacy in the acetic acid-induced writhing test by increasing the latency of the first writhe and reducing the number of writhes, as well as reducing the paw licking time in the second phase of the formalin test. The behavior of treated animals exposed to the hot plate test, however, did not differ from that of the control group. These data suggest that IM-3 has antinociceptive effects in mice, which is probably mediated by anti-inflammatory mechanisms.

Abstract: the substitution of equine chorionic gonadotropin (ecg) by follicle-stimulating hormone (fsh) in protocols for synchronization of ovulation in santa inês ewes was assessed. ten females were submitted to the insertion of intravaginal sponges containing 60 mg medroxyprogesterone acetate for 10 days; after this period sponges were withdrawn and the animals were randomly divided into two groups. group 1 (n = 5): intramuscular injection of 0.5 ml d-cloprostenol and 300 ui ecg; group 2 (n = 5): intramuscular injection of 0.5 ml d-cloprostenol and 20 mg fsh. interval between sponge withdrawal and estrus beginning was 27.7 h and 35.9 h for ecg and fsh, respectively. interval between sponge withdrawal and the end of estrus was 55.8 h for ecg treatment and 55.6 h for fsh treatment. estrus length was 29.3 h and 19.6 h, for ecg and fsh treatments, respectively. the biggest follicle and the second in size measured 0.74 cm and 0.54 cm for ecg treatment, whereas for the fsh treatment they measured 0.73 and 0.50 cm. the interval between the beginning of estrus and ovulation was similar within all groups: 21.0 h for ecg treated ewes and 25.2 h for the ones treated with fsh. ewes treated with ecg presented an interval of 47.5 h between sponge withdrawal and ovulation, while the ones treated with fsh presented a 61.1 h interval. ovulation occurred 8.3 h before the end of estrus in the ecg group. on the other hand, ewes treated with fsh ovulated 5.5 h after the end of estrus. estrus and ovulation were efficiently synchronized in santa inês ewes by using long-term progestogen protocol associated to the administration of 20 mg fsh, along with prostaglandin f2α (pgf2α) at the moment of sponge withdrawal, thus substituting the use of ecg.
