Information and communication technologies in university teaching: Implications in European higher education space

Abstract: The use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in Higher Education is considered a pre-requisite for adaptation to the European Higher Education Area. The objective is to assess the didactic possibilities of these resources in attaining the objectives sought. Pedagogical reflection about ICT should focus on how these resources can benefit students, what they represent in the curriculum, and what learning, competencies, attitudes, etc. they can foster in students, without losing sight of the kind of citizens and professionals that our present society demands. To make this change successfully, it is necessary to satisfy the training demands of the lecturers. The research is characterized by being a descriptive study based on interviews of lecturers, whether employed by the government or under contract, belonging to the various areas of specialty of the Universidad de Salamanca. Among the competences that the lecturers believed to be determinant in the European Higher Education Space, they consider that it is important to become familiar with new programs to help them with their subjects, to know how to create web sites, and to know how to use virtual environments. On the other hand, they stress the importance of being able to link the use of ICT to educational practice.

Abstract: Pretendemos estudiar las actitudes de los docentes en el contexto de la investigación Integración de las TIC como herramientas docentes en la universidad dentro del marco del espacio europeo . Para ello se ha elaborado una escala de actitudes tipo Likert siguiendo con rigurosidad todos los pasos indicados por los expertos. La escala construida consta de 24 ítems y sus características de discriminación (todos los valores t para cada ítem al comparar las medias entre grupos extremos son altamente significativos); fiabilidad (calculada por distintos procedimientos nos proporciona valores todos ellos superiores a 0.95) y validez (validez factorial: estructura factorial unidimensional con un primer factor que explica por sí solo el 50% de la variabilidad; validez criterial: una correlación de 0.92 entre las puntuaciones de la escala respecto al criterio comportamiento ) pueden considerarse plenamente satisfactorias. Our intention was to study the attitudes of educators in the context of the research project entitled Integration of Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) as teaching tools at University within the framework of the European Higher Education Area . To do this, a Likert-type scale of attitudes was created rigorously following all the steps indicated by the experts. The scale consists of 24 items along with their characteristics of discrimination (all the t values for each item when compared to the averages among extreme groups are highly significant); reliability (calculated through different procedures, provides us with values, all of which are above 0.95); and validity (factorial validity; criteria validity: a correlation of 0.92 between the scores of the scale regarding the criterion behaviour ) could be considered completely satisfactory.
Competencias en Tecnologías de Información y Comunicación (TIC) de los estudiantes universitarios

Abstract: En esta época la vida de los seres humanos está signada por las Tecnologías de la Información y Comunicación (TIC), a través de éstas, las personas generan espacios virtuales, conocimiento, interacciones y se relacionan en maneras antes inimaginables. En este contexto, es importante estudiar las competencias de los estudiantes en el uso de las TIC. Esta investigación, subvencionada por AECID (2009-10), tuvo como propósito identificar las competencias en el uso académico de las Tecnologías de Información y Comunicación (TIC) por parte de los estudiantes universitarios en las universidades de: Salamanca, en Espa a, Autónoma de Chihuahua y Veracruzana, en México. La muestra incluye los alumnos de clase de 20 profesores de cada universidad que utilizan significativamente las TIC en sus procesos de ense anza-aprendizaje. Los datos se obtuvieron por medio de un cuestionario aplicado a los estudiantes. Los resultados muestran confianza de los estudiantes en sus competencias en TIC para interactuar en ambientes de ense anza mediados por tecnología.

Abstract: In contemporary times, human life is greatly affected by the Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), which enable the generation of virtual spaces, knowledge, and interactions that were unimaginable in the past. Within this context, it is important to analyse students’ competencies in the use of ICTs. This article presents the results of a research project aimed to identify the ICT competency levels among students from the Spanish university of Salamanca and the Mexican universities of Veracruz and Chihuahua. The sample included the pupils of 60 professors (20 from each university), who significantly used ICTs in their classes. The data were obtained from questionnaires applied to the students of the selected ICT-mediated classes. Results show that students trust their competency in ICTs to interact in ICT-mediated environments.
El profesorado universitario desde una perspectiva de género

Abstract: En este artículo presentamos un estudio de las instituciones universitarias de Castilla y León, y más concretamente de su personal docente, desde una perspectiva de género. Con la finalidad de que sirva como marco de referencia efectuamos, en primer lugar, algunas reflexiones sobre la relación entre el género, la formación y las posibilidades de acceso laboral; en segundo lugar recogemos y comentamos algunos datos en torno a la evolución experimentada por la Universidad Espa ola, en relación con la participación de la mujer entre su profesorado. Este mismo aspecto es revisado también en un otro epígrafe del artículo, en el que nos centramos ya propiamente en las instituciones universitarias de Castilla y León. Por último, describimos la investigación que sobre género y función docente hemos desarrollado durante el curso académico 2001-2002 en la citada comunidad autónoma, presentando los principales resultados al respecto

Abstract: University professors exchange opinions on tutorship in a virtual seminar developed at the University of Salamanca (March of 2007) in the context of the investigational project TICDUS. This study was subsidized by the Ministry of Education and Science and performed by GITE-USAL (Group of Investigation-innovation of Educational Technology of the Salamanca University). The contributions of the Information and Communication Technologies are analyzed to improve the didactic processes related to the methodological change proposed by the European Program of Higher Education. The tutorship is considered a basic strategy for the students’ guidance, individualization and pursuit of learning in any pedagogic model. Yet this is even more apparent when we attempt methodologies that give the students more autonomy, as with the credits of the ECTS and the ICTs. These are appreciated as important and valuable resources to achieve the proposed ends. The good practices conflict with the difficulties of time, space, number of students, recognition of educational activity, etc. These indicate that the professors are factors of the current situation and can stand in the way of a true change towards greater learning and an increase in didactic efficacy Los profesores universitarios intercambian opiniones sobre la tutoría en un seminario virtual desarrollado en la Universidad de Salamanca (marzo de 2007) en el marco del proyecto de investigación TICDUS, subvencionado por el Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia, en el que está trabajando el grupo GITE-USAL (Grupo de Investigación-Innovación de Tecnología Educativa de la Universidad de Salamanca). Se analizan las aportaciones de las Tecnologías de la Información y Comunicación para mejorar los procesos didácticos relacionados con el cambio metodológico que propugna el Espacio Europeo de Educación Superior. La tutoría es considerada una estrategia básica para la orientación, la individualización y el seguimiento del aprendizaje de los estudiantes en cualquier modelo pedagógico pero aún más cuando se proponen metodologías que dan mayor autonomía a los alumnos, como es el caso de los créditos ECTS y las TIC son valoradas como importantes y valiosos recursos para conseguir los fines propuestos. Differences in the pressures of canal anal and rectal sensitivity in patients with fecal incontinence, chronic constipation and healthy subjects

Abstract: introduction: there exist a great variability in the manometric findings between patients with anal incontinence (ai) and healthy subjects. the correlation between the pressures of the anal canal and the ai is not exact by the wide rank of normal values. objectives: prospective study to evaluate differences in the pressures of the anal canal and in rectal sensitivity in patients with ai, chronic constipation (cc) and healthy subjects. material and methods: ninety four patients with ai, 36 patients with cc and 15 healthy subjects were included. the following data were obtained: age, sex, resting pressure, anal canal length (acl), squeeze maximum pressure (smp), squeeze pressure duration (spd), first sensation, urge and maximum tolerated volume (mtv). statistical study: test of kruskal-wallis, test of mann-whitney, and multinomial logistic regression test. results: there were significant differences in the resting pressure (p < 0.001), the acl (p < 0.001) and the smp (p < 0.01) in the group of ai with respect to the other two groups. the volume for the first sensation was significantly lower in the healthy subjects than that in the other two groups (p < 0.05). the urge volume and the mvt were smaller in the group with ai with respect to the other groups (p < 0.001). in multivariate analysis the age, the resting pressure and the volume for the first sensation and urge increase the relative risk for ai. conclusions: the greater age, the decrease in anal canal resting pressure and the alteration of rectal sensation increase the risk for ai.

Abstract: the results of assessment and follow-up are presented concerning the rur@lia programme by applying an action-based research methodology. this programme is being carried out in the province of granada, spain, and the purpose of which is to present new technologies in its villages. the main objective is to build up and implement a new technology training centre for women who, for various reasons, have little chance to access new technology tools. it is a highly innovative project intended to become a social empowerment agent through action-based participation organised by a giap (action-based research group). its range of action are the municipalities of the utedlt (alfacar area employment local development and technology unit): alfacar, cogollos vega, calicasas, nivar, viznar, huetor santillan, beas de granada y güevéjar, as well as the districts of granada?s capital and northern region of albaizin.

Abstract: this study goes in search of the protective factors of stress in the work environment that protect and benefit health in stressful situations. our objective was to know the stress protector factors that are present in the work environment, as perceived by the health staff who work in public and private hospitals in the araucanía region, chile. it is a qualitative study based on glasser y strauss theory, which included in depth interviews to eight important informers: heads of medical centers, nurses, aids and physicians who work in critical and non critical areas, public and private, medium and high complexity in the araucanía region. they were recorded under permission and transcribed to summarize what they perceived. after this process the interviews were put on a software for textual analysis, assigning codes for specific themes and then we wrote down comments. code categories were built on and categories were compared and relations were established between the commentaries and categories in order to analyze them together. we founded five domains of stress" protector factors in the organization. they were: organizational structure, clear definition of role, leadership, physical environment, and teamwork. the results pretend to be the first step to reveal the positive aspects of useful work to objectively orientate the future strategies to promote a healthy working environment for the employees.
