A Geostatistical Approach to the Seasonal Precipitation Effect on Boro Rice Production in Bangladesh  [PDF]

Abstract: Geographical assessments on the relationship between climate variability and crop production are important for planning adaptation programs to climate change impacts on Asian rice production. This paper analyses the seasonal precipitation consequences to irrigated crop yields, in opposition to the idea that irrigated crop yields are not affected by precipitation changes. Geostatistical methods are applied to assess changes in the patterns of seasonal precipitation and corresponding changes in the Boro crop production in Bangladesh. Surfaces depicting changes in the monsoon, non-monsoon and total precipitation from 2006 to 2007, and changes in three varieties of Boro crop yield and Total Boro yield from 2006-2007 to 2007-2008 crop year are generated through Splines, Inverse Distance Weighting and Ordinary Kriging methods. Performance evaluation of these models is also performed. The relationships between the surfaces of different precipitation seasons and the surfaces of different Boro yield seasons are then assessed. The results show that there is a significant correlation between seasonal precipitation changes and Boro yield changes with notable correlation coefficients and similarity in the patterns. A significant conformity of the high precipitation zones to the high Boro yielding zones is also depicted.

Abstract: this study aims at understanding how the integration of sociocultural issues occurs on the curricular proposal and teaching practice of a pre-school unit where professionals, joined to relatives and neighborhood, constructed within ten years a political-teaching project named "em busca de uma alternativa curricular" (searching for a curriculum alternative). the topics that conducted the investigation were: political-teaching project history and origin, interactions among different social actors, real curriculum and its demonstrations in the teaching practice, large and local culture, age and type relations.

Abstract: this paper approaches the relation between psychoanalysis and university. it begins with a historical approach in rio de janeiro since the 60's and examines the possibilities of psychoanalysis in undergraduate and postgraduate levels. the former only presents knowledge 'about' psychoanalysis. the latter may involve clinical work or a psychoanalyst's working through a master or doctoral thesis. the text presents the 'four discourse' theory formulated by lacan and discusses the transmission of psychoanalysis through teaching. it puts forward that this transmission is of a 'wish for knowledge' based on its lack which is the core of psychoanalytical approach to knowledge.

Abstract: the media attention towards lgbt issues after the 1990s generated impacts on social representations of sexual orientation and gender identity, as well as on the portuguese lgbt movement itself, which was forced to an increased political reflexivity about its own individual and/or collective image. consequently, the subversive public display of the body is often excluded, even within the lgbt movement. such stance mirrors an ideological choice that tends to disconnect lgbt activism of its central role in deconstructing the dominant heteronormative and heterosexist culture, representing disengagement in relation to the queer venture. contributing to this debate are processes of ?normalization of homosexuality? which result from, and create, a narrow understanding of the frames of queer performativity considered (un)acceptable in the public sphere.

Abstract: this study analyses the influence of the level of expertise in law, and of the defendants' kinship on the judgment of a child physical abuse case. in general, there were found similarities between the two levels of expertise approached (lay persons and sub-experts), wich go in favour of the convergence of their perspectives about this problematic, as showed by other works. also the kinship of the child's agressor (father/stepfather) didn't produce significant diferences on the way he has been judged.

Abstract: this article consists in the proposal of an alternative procedure to the usually adopted in the categorization of the questions formulated in the studies of hypothesis testing about the others. in some of them (e.g., devine, hirt & gehrke, 1990; martins, 1996; snyder & swann, 1978; swann & giuliano, 1987), that categorization has been offering difficulties to the judges, whose solution adopted is, here, considered as a possible source of biases. the procedure used by martins (1995) is presented as an alternative to those of the antecedent investigations and his disadvantages are discussed.

Abstract: the immersion of children in a world of written symbols and interactions around "writing" allows them to make a series of discoveries about the nature and functions of the alphabetical code before the beginning of formal education. however, the richness of these contacts and the frequency of transactions before entry in school are variable and this means that children begin school in different stages in terms of their perception of the nature of the alphabetical code. the massification of education has led to teaching strategies which are uniform and decentred from children's conceptual confusion surrounding the functioning of the written code. the comprehension of the alphabetical principle, i.e. the perception that letters ordered in the space ofwords represent the oral phonemes of lexical units, requires competences of high complexity of abstraction. several aspects are involved in this comprehension: phonological consciousness, knowledge of letters and perception of writing as a code that represents linguistic units. each of these competences and conceptions can be an obstacle to the comprehension of the alphabetical principle, affecting academic success in reading acquisition.

Abstract: macrae, milne and griffiths (1993) developed two studies in order to analyse the effect of counterfactual thought on crimes' perception. they manipulated counterfactual alternative proximity (study 1) and antecedent's normality (study 2) in the scenario. however, they didn't measure participants' thoughts. they just inferred indirectly counterfactuals' effects from crimes' evaluations. we proposed to replicate macrae et al.'s (1993) study 2 measuring participants' thoughts. we expected in exceptional condition participants to generate a greater number of counterfactuals, to percept the crime as more serious, to recommend a more severe punishment to the perpetrator and do exhibit a more sympathy toward the victim. results have infirmed all our hypotheses, not corroborating authors' findings. anchoring on the explication that these divergences were done to our introduction of counterfactuals' measure, we've conducted a second study that was the ?integral? replication of original work. again, we didn't reproduce macrae et al's (1993) results. general discussion is established around the model of counterfactual thought generation (roese & olson, 1995), the role of the participants' gender and the ways to measure counterfactuals by listing them. we also pose several methodological advertencies as well as new investigation questions in the domain.

Abstract: this article tries to analyse the relationship between the development of phonological competence and the evolution of children′s conceptions about written language, in pré-syllabic children through two empirical studies. in the first one we used a training programme with the purpose of producing changes in the way children represent written language. the trainning was efficient since all the children progressed to a level that represents written language related to the syllabic hypothesis. also the children that were submitted to this programme made progress in their phonological skills, most of all in their abilities to manipulate syllabic units. the second research is centered in a phonological training programme focused in the syllabic units. through this training programme the children made significant progress in their phonological skills, but this programme had also implications in the way children represent written language, since their written productions became regulated by the syllabic hypothesis.
