American Journal of Plant Sciences (AJPS) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ajps.2013.49229

This study describes the anatomy of sterile leaves of Elaphoglossum discolor (Kuhn) C. Chr., E. flaccidum (Fée) T. Moore and E. laminarioides (Bory ex Fée) T. Moore, the most representative species of the genus in the Ecological Park of Gunma in Pará State. It reports the main diagnostic characters and provides new systematic data for the group. In addition, it locates the production and accumulation sites of bioactive compounds to determine possible adaptive strategies of these species in the Amazon rainforest environment. Diagnostic structural features include stoma typology, central veins and margin forms, type of mesophyll, and the presence of schlerenchymatous sheaths in the cortex, among others. Among the bioactive compounds related to defense adaptation are phenolic compounds, which occur in all three species, and alkaloids and mucilage, which are exclusive to E. laminarioides. Of the three species studied, E. laminarioides has features that make it the best suited to the rainforest environment.

Abstract: the ecological plasticity observed in plants that inhabit different vegetation formations is often accompanied by morphological variations, the leaf being the vegetative organ with the greatest structural variation. in view of this concept, the leaf anatomy of five species of polygala l. occurring in restinga (sandy coastal plain) and cerrado (savanna) areas in the state of s?o paulo were analyzed in order to inventory their principal characters and describe their leaf structure, to thus compare them and assess the possibility of verifying structural patterns common to the ecological conditions of both vegetation formations. the species studied were: p. cyparissias a.st.-hil. & moq., p. laureola a.st.-hil. & moq., p. paniculata l. found in restinga, and p. angulata dc. and p. violacea aubl. emend. marques occurring in campo cerrado and cerrad?o margin areas, respectively. the middle region of the leaf blade and petiole proximal region of each leaf were processed following the usual techniques for scanning electron and light microscopy. the results show two structural patterns common to the species from the restinga and cerrado area formations: mesomorphic characteristics are observed in p. laureola, p. paniculata, and p. violacea, and xeromorphic in p. cyparissias and p. angulata.

Revista Brasileira de Biociências , 2008,
Abstract: Based on partially distinct characters to discriminate species, two revisions of the genus Polygala, subgenus Hebeclada (Polygalaceae)recognized approximately 40 species (sensu Chodat) and nine species (sensu Bernardi). Comparing these revisions, a taxonomic study about the species of this subgenus occurring in Brazil was carried out, totalizing 25 species sensu Chodat and six species sensu Bernardi. The delimitation of the specis sensu Chodat was found to be more consistent than Bernardi’s. Twelve species and five varieties were accepted, three of which were species sensu Chodat transferred to this status. This work presents an identification key of the species, their descriptions and illustrations, as well as informations about flowering and frutification times, habhttp://www.doaj.org/restrictedDirectory of open access journalsitat and geographic distribution.

Acta Amazonica , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0044-59672012000300003
Abstract: species of mansoa are called "cipó-d'alho" because of the smell of garlic that wafts from their vegetative and reproductive parts. since data on the morphology and occurrence of their secretory structures are scarce and even absent for m. standleyi, the present work characterizes the distribution and morphology of such structures in the vegetative aerial axis of the latter. to do so, samples of the leaf blade and of nodal regions were fixed and examined using histological and scanning electron microscope techniques. histochemical tests with appropriate controls were carried out on the secretory structures during the secretory phase. fly and ant individuals that visit the species were sampled, preserved and identified by an entomologist. the secretory structures of the vegetative aerial axis of m. standleyi are peltate and patelliform glandular trichomes. all develop asynchronously and are present in the nodal regions and leaf blade, mainly in their youngest parts. trichomes form a secretory complex in the nodal regions while they are scattered in the leaf blade. histochemical analyses revealed that the cupulate and patelliform trichomes are extrafloral nectaries and that the peltate ones present an alkaloid fraction. the visitors of the nodal glands are ants crematogaster (formicidae) and ectatomma brunea (vespoidea, formicidae) and flies oxysarcodexia (sarcophagidae, subfamily utitidae [ulidiidae]). the secretory structures of the vegetative aerial axis of mansoa standleyi are similar to those reported for bignoniaceae. an extrafloral nectary is described for m. standleyi for the first time.

Abstract: this study aimed at evaluating the functional capacity and health-related quality of life in chronic renal insufficiency (cri) patients undergoing hemodialysis treatment, also checking possible correlations between these clinical variables and age, body mass index (bmi), and hemodialysis time. sixteen patients were submitted to functional capacity assessment by means of the six-minute walk test (6wt), measures of maximal inspiratory and expiratory pressures, and by the fatigue severity scale (fss). patients also answered the sf-36 questionnaire. functional capacity proved to be below predicted values at the 6wt and at respiratory, mainly expiratory muscles; mean fss scores pointed to moderate fatigue. patients over 60 years old and those with lesser hemodialysis time showed lower functional capacity only as to the distance walked at the 6wt. bmi did not interfere with functional capacity. mean overall sf-36 scores were low; pain and lesser vitality were pointed as the sf-36 domains that most interfere in quality of life; age, bmi, and hemodialysis time have not shown to be relevant to most sf-36 domains. results suggest that, with slight interference of age and hemodialysis time, patients with cri undergoing hemodialysis treatment have poor functional capacity and health-related quality of life.
Use of the partogram in labor: Analysis of its application in different care models  [PDF]
Cláudia de Azevedo Aguiar, Roselane Gon?alves, Ana Cristina d’Andretta Tanaka
Open Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology (OJOG) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ojog.2013.39A001

Objective: To compare and identify possible differences in the use of the partogram in different models of delivery and birth care. Design/Setting: This was a cross-sectional study performed in two Brazilian hospitals with different models of care: Natural Birth Center (NBC) and Traditional Obstetric Center (TOC). Data were collected from the medical records of 112 mothers with low obstetric risk who underwent an intrapartum cesarean section. Socioeconomic and demographic variables, obstetric history, partogram labor evolution, complications, and indication of cesarean section were included. A significance level of 5% and a confidence interval of 95% were considered. Data were analyzed in accordance with the Brazilian Ministry of Health and World Health Organization recommendations. Findings: In the NBC, the use of the partogram follows the Ministry of Health recommendations for filling-in variables with greater frequency and significance (p < 0.001) beginning with the active phase of labor in the correct column in relation to the lines of alert and action (p = 0.00, OR = 42.2) and continuous records (p = 0.00, OR = 53.3). However, obstetric interventions, such as use of oxytocin, amniotomy and cesarean delivery were concentrated in area 1 of the partogram in both institutions. Conclusions: In this study, the NBC used the instrument most adequately; however there was no difference from the other model (TOC) and regarding the moment of interventions, many of them were early. This finding implies that, regardless of the care model, the partogram has been used bureaucratically and not as a guiding instrument of assistance envisioning safely and timely practices. In other words, aside from a “humanized” physical structure, it is necessary that obstetric practices should be focused on best evidence, thus reducing maternal and perinatal risks.

Abstract: Homeopathic medicaments are prepared associating the active substance to an inert excipient which becomes an integral part of the remedy. The aim of this research was to analyze the use of mannitol as a homeopathic inert excipient, as a possible substitute to lactose in the preparation of tablets and powder. Research was conducted in homeopathic and manipulation pharmacies in the regions Centro and Icaraí of Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, July to September, 2006. The use of mannitol as inert excipient was detected in all manipulation/homeopathic pharmacies of Niterói researched. The main declared reason for the use of mannitol as an option in the preparation of tablets and powders was the solicitation in medical prescriptions for patients with intolerance to lactose or diabetes. There was no report of undesirable effects related to the use of mannitol according to the people interviewed.

Journal of Biomaterials and Nanobiotechnology (JBNB) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/jbnb.2018.91001
Abstract: Several studies argue that an ideal biomaterial for urinary catheters is utopian. Based in literature review it seems to be true. However, research advances: the biomaterial itself, new designs, new coatings, associated drugs, etc. Once implanted and interacting with urine, two old problems persist: encrustation and bacterial colonization. In this context, an extracellular product from bacterial synthesis on sugarcane molasses biomaterial has been studied in several experimental and clinical studies. Based on its high biocompatibility, the aim of this study is to evaluate its performance in an in vivo model as an endourologic prosthesis implanted in the bladder of Wistar rats. We evaluate physical, chemical and biological phenomena in comparison to an already established biomaterial, polyurethane. Even though it is not a finished product, the sugarcane biopolymer presented similar performance compared to polyurethane in several analyzed parameters and has an important characteristic: low cost.
