Abstract: Sugarcane is an important tropical crop, responsible for two thirds of the world sugar production, gaining actually importance as a source of biofuel. Drought tolerance is a very important feature considering the actual climate change scenario throughout the world. This study aimed to determine the genetic diversity between sugarcane varieties with contrasting features under drought. For this purpose, twelve ISSR primers were used to characterize nine sugarcane varieties under cultivation in different countries including selected drought resistant material from Northeast Brazil and two varieties from India as contrasting genotypes. 317 scorable bands were generated, among which 301 comprised polymorphic markers, with an average of 25 polymorphic bands per primer. In the generated dendrogram the accessions were placed in clusters, where cluster A included two varieties from India (Co331 and Co419), and B comprised plants eight Brazilian accessions and a ‘Barbado’ variety. Within this clade, drought tolerant and susceptible varieties were clearly separated. The present evaluation revealed important contrasting parental candidates regarding their drought response, very promising for future mapping approaches aiming the identification of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) associated to drought in sugarcane. The selected primers were used for the first time in sugarcane, representing valuable tools for future evaluations, with emphasis to diversity characterization and genetic mapping.

Abstract: the use of tolerance as a form of control for soybean rust can be a viable alternative, since qualitative resistance has been shown to be unstable in function of fungal variability. this trial was carried out at in western bahia in 2003/04, with the objective of assessing the tolerance of the main soybean (glycine max) cultivars used in the area. four early maturity cultivars [mg/br 46 (conquista), emgopa 315, brs corisco and m-soy 8411] and four cultivars of late maturity (brs barreiras, m-soy 9350, ft 106 and brs sambaíba) were assessed. tolerance was quantified by determining the difference of yield in subplots treated and untreated with fungicide. the cultivars mg/br 46 (conquista) and m-soy 8411 did not present significant yield differences; however, this could not be attributed to tolerance in function of the low severity observed in this trial. this difference could be attributed to escape, since when the rust obtained higher values of severity, the two cultivars were already in the final stages of development. although the maximum severity observed in this trial has been low (30.5% for brs barreiras), except mg/br 46 (conquista) and m-soy 8411, the others cultivars assessed presented significant differences among the subplots treated and untreated with fungicide. this shows an absence of tolerance in the main cultivars commercially planted in western bahia. it was observed that early maturity cultivars had inferior yield reductions than late maturity cultivars.

Abstract: the absence of rainfall data for stations due to equipament or operator problems compromise information continuity. in order to apply a statistical treatment on rainfall historical series, gap filling needs to be done. usual methods for this are: regional means (pr), linear (rm) and potential (rp) multiple regression, regional means using linear regression (rs) and regional vector (vr). using total annual rainfall historical series with 22 years of observation for six rainfall stations in the state of goias, a comparison analysis was done between gap filling methods and the differences between observed and estimated values were evaluated. for the regional vector method five possibilities were considered extracting from the series the observed data, replacing the estimated value in the series by the methods of regional means (vr/pr), linear regression (vr/rm), potential regression (vr/rp) and regional means using linear regression (vr/rs). according to results it was concluded, in ascending order, minor the lowest differences in relative desviation were obtained with the methods: rm, vr/rp, pr, vr/rm, vr/rs, rp, rs, vr/pr and vr. according to the regional vector method, an improvement was verified in data values was verified when a combination between some other methods was used.

Knowing the importance of the rootstocks for the success of the citrus crop and its influence on tolerance to stress factors, this study was conducted in order to evaluate tolerance of citrus rootstocks to water stress studying two factors: water management ('without stress' and 'under stress' and in this latter case, the irrigation was based on 50 and 25% moisture of field capacity) and rootstocks factor (10 citrus genotypes provided by Citrus Breeding Program of Embrapa Cassava and Tropical Fruits). A randomized block design was adopted with three replications and 15 plants per plot. Shoot, leaves, stem, root and total dry mass, root/shoot ratio, leaf weight ratio and relative yield were evaluated. Water deficit reduced the total dry mass and increased the root/shoot ratio in some rootstocks. Leaf dry mass is the most sensible variable in citrus rootstocks under water deficit. 'TSKFL CTTR x-017' has a significant capacity of tolerance to drought, with promising potential for use in areas under drought conditions.

Abstract:
Dyslipidemia may influence enzymes and transfer proteins needed to the lipoprotein particle remodeling. Calculated indices and evaluation of lipoprotein particle size have widely been used to predict cardiovascular risk. The aim of this study was to evaluate HDL particle size and LDL particle size estimate based on TG/HDL-C as well as apoB/apoA-I ratio as possible marker and atherogenic indices, respectively, of cardiovascular disease risk in the presence of dyslipidemia. We evaluated 100 individuals of both gender, without treatment with lipid-lowering drugs, 27 normolipidemic and 73 dyslipidemic, such as isolated hypercholesterolemia (n = 16), isolated hypertriglyceridemia (n = 17), low HDL-C (n = 26) and mixed dyslipidemia (n = 14). The HDL particle size did not differ between groups. The TG/HDL-C ratio was higher in groups with isolated hypertriglyceridemia (4.2 ± 1.5), low HDL-C (5.2 ± 3.1) and mixed dyslipidemia (5.3 ± 1.6). The apoB/apoA-I ratio was increased in all groups of dyslipidemia (apoB/apoA-I > 0.5) when compared to normolipidemic (apoB/apoA-I = 0.5, p < 0.001). There was a positive linear correlation between the TG/HDL-C ratio and the apoB/apoA-I ratio in low HDL-C group (r = 0.507, p = 0.008, Spearman). The results suggest that the evaluations of lipoproteins particles remodeling markers and the use of calculated indices may contribute to the evaluation of cardiovascular disease risk when dyslipidemia take place.
