Recent treatment of postischaemic anoxic brain damage after cardiac arrest by using therapeutic hypothermia
Srpski Arhiv za Celokupno Lekarstvo , 2008, DOI: 10.2298/sarh0810549a
Abstract: Organ injury caused by ischemia and anoxia during prolonged cardiac arrest is compounded by reperfusion injury that occurs when spontaneous circulation is restored. Mild hypothermia (32-35oC) is neuroprotective through several mechanisms, including suppression of apoptosis, reduced production of excitotoxins and free radicals, and anti-inflammatory actions. Experimental studies show that hypothermia is more effective the earlier it is started after return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC). Two randomized clinical trials show improved survival and neurological outcome in adults who remained comatose after initial resuscitation from prehospital VF cardiac arrest, and who were cooled after ROSC. Different strategies can be used to induce hypothermia. Optimal timing of therapeutic hypothermia for cardiac ischemia is unknown. In patients who failed to respond to standard cardiopulmonary resuscitation, intra-arrest cooling using ice-cold intravenous (i.v.) fluid improved the chance of survival. Recently, fasudil, a Rho kinase inhibitor, was reported to prevent cerebral ischaemia in vivo by increasing cerebral blood flow and inhibiting inflammatory responses. In future, two different kinds of protective therapies, BCL-2 overexpression and hypothermia, will both inhibit aspects of apoptotic cell death cascades, and that combination treatment can prolong the temporal 'therapeutic window' for gene therapy.
Bigeminy: A result of digoxin and St John’s wort interaction
Vojnosanitetski Pregled , 2003, DOI: 10.2298/vsp0303361a
Abstract: A case of an by digoxin under unusual circumstances is reported. An 80-year-old man, previously on long-term digoxin treatment, started consuming St John’s wort herbal tea (2 000 ml/daily) because of frequent episodes of depression. After the cessation of consuming herbal tea containing Hypericum perforatum, digoxin poisoning developed in our patient. Electrocardiography revealed nodal bradicardia 36/min and bigeminy. Manifested symptoms were the consequence of interaction between digoxin and Hypericum perforatum which were consumed simultaneously, and the cessation of consuming St John’s wort herbal tea afterwards. Therapy was the same as in the standard digitalis poisoning. Consumers of St John’s wort combined with medical products are advised not to discontinue tea consumption on their own, without consulting their physician.

Glasnik Etnografskog Instituta SANU , 2005, DOI: 10.2298/gei0553105s
Abstract: Attitudes of Serbian "returnees" of Livanjsko polje about ethnic identity of Us, Serbs, and Them, Croats, are demonstrated in this article. Croats that have political control and social-economic power, appear as "Significant Others", but also Strangers, representatives of different peaceful and humanitarian organizations. Religious belief and language appear as basic symbol of difference, Marker, between Serbs and Croats, although existing attitudes in a bigger measure rely on religious belief. Basic attitudes about identity Us and Them are led out from interrelations of these Markers and people. There are two groups of attitudes about Us-identity. The 119 first group is mostly the answer at negative external determination, by which the Serbs are determinate as nationalists and aggressors. They are steered on negation of such definition, so the Serbs are generally seen as peaceful, tolerant, nationalists - internationalists; shortly, as bearers of positive collective, but also individual relation to Others. The second group of attitudes mainly relates negative aspects of Serbian identity. There are Serbian dissension, individual interests, generally - attitudes which speak about collective, but also individual negative relation of Serbs to members of their own group. Both groups of attitudes could be explaining by interrelation of orthodox religion and people. This determination of Us, as it is limited by external definition, in that way qualifies determination of Them. So, the Croats, considering the interrelation of Catholicism and people, are seen as nationalists, with clear religion - national aim and steered to its realization - as aggressors. Though, here are both negative and positive attitudes about Croat identity. If positive or negative aspects of that identity would obtain, before all depends of the fact in which measure the Croats are steered by their church, in fact, which politics, in the certain time, the catholic church prosecutes relate to orthodox church. Therefore the Croat appears as bearers of individual-positive relation to Others (Serbs), when the church do not steer them in other way. So, until the catholic, religious politics is neutral, harmonious ethnic relations are possible, owing this positive aspect of Croat identity at individual plan and aspects of Serbian identity at both, collective and individual, plan (regardless of effect of church). On concrete terrain of Livanjsko polje, Serbs see there selves as the most representative bearers of positive aspects of Serbian identity, and neighbor’s Croats (from Livno) as people w
Condom as a professional symbol among the persons engaged in sex work in Belgrade

Glasnik Etnografskog Instituta SANU , 2006, DOI: 10.2298/gei0654201b
Abstract: Based on qualitative research data, this article exams the meaning of condom among persons engaged in sex work. Sex-work is a specific activity, with a sex service being an object of economic transaction. In order to delineate private sexual relationship and business sexual relationship sex workers rely on a professional code. Abiding to this code is valued positively by the professional group whereas disrespecting it leads to stigmatization of the offender within the group. The basic markers separating professional and private life in a continuum of sexuality are money as a sign and condom as a symbol. Use of condom during the sex-work relation is a symbol of correct approach to work and as such marks the border between professional and unprofessional way for doing the job in addition to marking the border between work and private life. The data show that within this borderline area in real-life situations, complex interactive relationship between sex-workers and their immediate environment leads to discrepancies in the consistency of condom use. The lack of consistent condom is present when a client or type of service is perceived as safe, i.e. carries the meaning of the category "with condom", or when some ambiguous environmental circumstances are present such as influence of the police or pimps, protectors and people related to private life of sex-worker. In the field of sex-work, condom grows from an object of infection prevention into an object that symbolizes professional ethics within sex-work and, in that way, it keeps an atmosphere of a healthy and clean private life for sex-workers.
Methodology of focus group research

Sociologija , 2005, DOI: 10.2298/soc0501001d
Abstract: The popularity of focus group interview has rapidly grown in the last two decades. After long-time period in which this technique had been practiced almost exclusively in marketing research it begins the period of its frequent application in a great number of academic fields (sociology, psychology, evaluation research, public opinion research, communication, medical care). Only with the intensification of investigations in which focus group interviewing has been applied it was enabled achieving of experience that can be methodologically generalized, with accompanying development of the technique. This text refers to the basic methodological principles of this technique's application. In the paper the methodological experiences are synthesized which are accumulated through an enormous number of foreign explorations, as well as in many-year research experience of the author.
Possibilities for application of comparative advertising and its effects

Economic Annals , 2006, DOI: 10.2298/eka0671090s
Abstract: In recent years, it has been evident that one form of competitive advertising gained in its importance - comparative advertising. Although its extensive use has probably been inspired by the belief that the perception of relative superiority of a brand compared to competition could be encouraged in that way, research evidence suggested mixed conclusions about its effectiveness. The paper summarizes the results of previous studies in this area, and in particular those which point out the factors that can influence effectiveness of comparative advertising. Additionally,, the paper summarizes the opinions of some authors about the long-term influence of this form of advertising on brand, and gives the recommendations for its more effective use. .

Temida , 2003, DOI: 10.2298/tem0303021j
Abstract: The article is based on legal analysis of parole in Serbian Criminal Law emphasizing need for reconsideration of existing provisions and possible changes. The lack of supervision, broadly and not precisely defined legal presumptions for parole are criticized, especially from the aspect of noticeable gap between our and foreign concepts of parole. French parole system, recently modernized, is presented as a good model for prospective changes and improvement of our concept of parole.

Zbornik Matice Srpske za Drustvene Nauke , 2005, DOI: 10.2298/zmsdn0519313n
Abstract: Population is of great significance in all spheres of social and economic life; the total number of population, natural population growth (natality and mortality) and its structure in various categories. Considering the marital status, the structure of population is one of the most important indicators of the composition of population, since it indicates the one of the most important factors of the reproduction of population. It specially refers to those countries which are like our country, since their greatest natality in most cases comes from legal marriages. The most complete structure of population, according to the marital status, comes from the registers, which are made during the considerable time intervals (10 years, most offen). Vital statistics also analyzes the natural movement of population, Knowing the marital status of the population, which (in)directly influences publishing the date of the number of those who got married and divorced, is not sufficient for the analyses of the population's development. Considering the complexity of the examined phenomenon - not being officially married - the use of complementary sources of data imposes itself as a fundamental principle. One necessarily needs to use the knowledge of various sciences and scientific disciplines. Besides sociology, demography, statistics, ethnology history, there will be also theological literature. The goal of this work is to find the other possible sources of data about the marital behaviour of the population: for we are the witnesses of the increased number of the informal relationships. Before they get married, it has almost become a sort of rule that a young couple "lives together", and only after that, they eventually get married or separate.
