Abstract: the objective of this trial was to study the effects of recombinant bovine somatotropin on milk yield and composition, blood metabolites and hormonal profile in lactating goats. twenty-four toggenburg goats were assigned to one of two treatments as follows: t1 (n=12) received injection of 250 mg of r-bst, every 14 days (four injections), and t2 (n=12) received injections of saline solution (control). no significant differences on milk yield and composition (fat, protein, and dry extract) were observed comparing r-bst-treated goats with non-treated animals. however, milk lactose content was higher (p<0.05) on goats that received r-bst (4.47 ± 0.2) than on those treated with saline solution (4.34 ± 0.2 %) while somatic cells count was lower on t1 (681.1 ± 689.9) than on t2 [(1,001.84 ± 610.9 (x103 cells/ml)]. injection r-bst increased the concentration of non-esterified fatty acid compared to the saline-treated animals (309.67 ± 169.62 vs. 247.34 ± 126.38 meq/l) but the opposite was observed for urea concentration (86.84 ± 33.81 vs. 121.16 ± 42.57 mg/dl). the r-bst treatment reduced the total cholesterol and hdl levels (82.46 ± 19.25 vs. 89.29 ± 23.66 and 155.95 ± 19.67 x 177.67 ± 32.79 mg/dl for t1 and t2, respectively) in lactating goats. concentrations of albumin, glucose, total proteins, b-hidroxybutirate and thyroxin as well as body weight and body condition score all remained unchanged comparing both treatments. it can be concluded that r-bst increased milk lactose content, reduced somatic cells count, and changed the profile of blood metabolites of toggenburg goats.

Abstract: to evaluate the effect of using urea in the diet on ovarian follicular dynamics and plasma urea and progesterone concentration, an experiment was carried out with 29 alpine goats randomly distributed into four diets, each one containing 0%; 0.73%; 1.46% or 2.24% of urea on total dry matter. the follicular dynamics was monitored daily by ultrasonography. the estrous cycles were characterized by occurrence of two, three, four or five follicular waves. the emergence day of the first follicular wave in cycles with two waves, the length of the third wave and the maximum diameter of the largest follicle of the third wave in cycles with three waves presented a quadratic behavior according to the percentage of urea in the diets. in cycles with four waves, the urea intake did not influence the follicular dynamics. the interestrus and interovulatory periods and the luteal and follicular phases length did not differ among treatments. the plasma urea concentration did not differ among diets neither among collection weeks. plasma progesterone concentration on the estrus day and on the 11th day after estrus presented quadratic behavior, and on the 15th day after estrus, it linearly reduced acording to the percentage of urea in the diets. the supply of urea in diets at levels up to 2.24% in dietary dry matter did not influence the dry matter intake and the urea plasma concentration. for goats, the emergence day and the length of the waves, the follicular diameter and the plasma progesterone concentration on the estrus day and in the latter stages of diestrus were altered when there was supply of urea in the diet.

Journal of Behavioral and Brain Science (JBBS) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/jbbs.2014.412055
Abstract: This study investigated effects of post-training treatment with phaclofen, GABAB receptor antagonist, on the memory of food location and on the expression of Synapsin I in the hippocampus of pigeons. Pigeons were trained in food location (7 sessions) and underwent post-training treatment with phaclofen (0.3 mg/kg, i.p.; PHAC), saline (SAL) or non-treated (NTR). Testing for memory persistence occurred 7 days after the last training session (PHACR, SALR and NTRR Groups). Pigeons treated with phaclofen had lower latency and higher correct choice values than saline and non-treated controls (p < 0.05). Analysis of hippocampus tissue indicated that Synapsin I-positive cell counts were higher in pigeons treated with phaclofen than in saline and non-treated controls (p < 0.05). Data indicated enhancement of consolidation and persistence of food location memory, and up-regulation of Synapsin I expression in the hippocampus of pigeons, which were related with post-training blockade of GABAB receptors.
