Insights from chironomid oviposition is useful to visual pest control
Amit Lerner,Carynelisa Haspel,Nir Sapir,Nikolay Meltser
Fauna Norvegica , 2012, DOI: 10.5324/fn.v31i0.1404
Abstract: Efficient visual pest control is still in its infant stages. Although being non-invasive, environmentally friendly and potentially cost effective, we still have not cracked the way to efficiently use it against epidemic vector-carrying and crop-infesting insects. Chironomid ovipostion can provide insights to key factors in visual pest control by investigating the behavior under confined and unconfined conditions. Under confined condition, due to limited amount of oviposition sites and increase of egg density in highly preferred locations, females oviposit in less suitable sites. Intensity and polarization of light reflected from the oviposition sites were found to be important as guiding cues for the females. However, in the open outdoor where oviposition sites are unlimited, oviposition followed the polarization signal only, and the intensity was ignored as a cue. By applying this approach to reduce chironomid population in a natural reservoir we show that it may be used to divert ovipositing females to egg traps reflecting highly and horizontally polarized light. The potential of using color, intensity and polarization as a basis for building oviposition traps and applying it to pest control in the future, is discussed. doi: 10.5324/fn.v31i0.1404. Beyond the Clash between World-Views: Revisiting Husserl’s Concept of the Life-World  [PDF]
Rosemary R. P. Lerner
Advances in Anthropology (AA) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/aa.2013.33023
Abstract:

Husserl shares the European view whereby (physical and psychic) nature is the common denominator upon which the diversity of cultures are built, a vision that motivates the quest for the conditions of possibility of encounters beyond cultural differences, truth beyond multiple perspectives, and moral reconciliation beyond antagonisms. The American-Indian worldview seems to challenge that view, for it rather proposes a multinaturalism built upon a type of human and spiritual community common to every cosmic being. Husserl’s notion of the “life-world” is revisited, whereby what appears at first sight as “in-compossible” world-views shows indeed traits of an amazing proximity.

Theoretical Study of 5-HTP. Potential New Drug Resulting from the Complexation of 5-HTP with ATP  [PDF]
Josette Weinberg, Dan A. Lerner
Computational Chemistry (CC) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/cc.2013.11001
Abstract: 5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan), is the precursor of the neurotransmitter serotonin. Molecular parameters (interatomic distances and angles, total atomic charge, dipole moments) of 5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan) and ATP (Adenosine triphosphate), and of their possible complex, including its heat of formation, have been computed in an ab initio study involving DFT calculations. The 6-31G* basis set and the B3LYP functional were employed. The aim of this study is to emphasize by DFT calculation the possible existence of a complex between ATP and 5-HTP that may have the properties of a new drug. A Natural Bond Orbital analysis description offers supplementary details for the structure of the molecular units and their interaction.
Non-Fragile Controller Design for 2-D Discrete Uncertain Systems Described by the Roesser Model  [PDF]
Amit Dhawan
Journal of Signal and Information Processing (JSIP) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/jsip.2012.32033
Abstract: This paper is concerned with the design problem of non-fragile controller for a class of two-dimensional (2-D) discrete uncertain systems described by the Roesser model. The parametric uncertainties are assumed to be norm-bounded. The aim of this paper is to design a memoryless non-fragile state feedback control law such that the closed-loop system is asymptotically stable for all admissible parameter uncertainties and controller gain variations. A new linear matrix inequality (LMI) based sufficient condition for the existence of such controllers is established. Finally, a numerical example is provided to illustrate the applicability of the proposed method.
Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery-An Overview and Current Status  [PDF]
Amit Goel
Surgical Science (SS) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/ss.2012.310100
Abstract: Single incision laproscopic surgery is an alternative to conventional multiport laproscopy. Natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery term coined by a Consortium in 2005 remains a research technique with few clinical cases. Single incision surgery offers advantage of better cosmesis, reduced incisions, lesser hernias, decreased pain and infections. Long learning curves and cost of instrumentation are the difficulties encountered in its propagation. Single incision laproscopic surgery is an evolving technique for advanced laproscopic centers. This article outlines the overview of devices and instruments and the techniques, feasibility of single incision laproscopic surgery.
Comparative Study of Clinical Manifestation, Plain Film Radiography and Computed Tomography for Diagnosis of Maxillofacial Trauma  [PDF]
Amit Goel
Modern Plastic Surgery (MPS) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/mps.2015.54008
Abstract: Objective: Maxillofacial injuries are one of the commonest injuries encountered. Roentgenographic evaluation of maxillofacial trauma is of prime importance for diagnosis and treatment of these injuries. Study Design: Forty patients were evaluated in the prospective four-year study. We studied and evaluated the demography and diagnostic efficacy of clinical, plain radiography, and computed scan in maxillofacial trauma. Result: Road traffic accidents were the commonest cause of maxillofacial injuries. Patients having multiple fractures, mandibular fractures were the commonest. Conclusion: Computed tomography proved a useful adjunct in midfacial trauma.

Abstract: from the introduction of the edgewise technique by the dr edward angle, going by the technique of light wires of begg, until the present time the orthodontic has experienced diverse combinations and evolutions inside the techniques until arriving to the design of the combination brackets, current tendency in the production of the same ones, in this paper a recount of the evolution of the combination brackets is made until the current.
Sobre armonización, derecho comparado y la relación entre ambos
LERNER, Pablo;
Boletín mexicano de derecho comparado , 2004,
Abstract: the importance of comparative law is clear: not only does it help to understand the law as a cultural creation, but it also provides an intellectual base for the interpretation and the analysis of different legal systems, as well as helping for the understanding and interpretation of our own legal system. as the author of this essay explains, the relation between comparison and harmonization is complex and admits different readings. comparison and harmonization need each other, even though they develop themselves in different paths. in turn, both converge towards a common destiny: the emergence of a wider legal culture, in consonance with an era of transformations that seems to be leading towards an harmonization of legal systems.
