Gaceta Sanitaria , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0213-91112008000500008
Abstract: objectives: to describe informal caregivers' characteristics, quantify the effect of caregiving activities on caregivers' health, and determine whether this effect differs by sex. methods: a descriptive study was carried out based on the basque health survey 2002. physical and mental health, use of health services, social health and health related quality of life (hrql) indicators were compared in caregivers (n = 836) and non-caregivers (n = 5,706). age-adjusted logistic regression models were calculated to assess the association between the caregiver and effects on health by sex, socioeconomic position and occupational status. results: female caregivers showed worse results in 6 out of 10 indicators compared with non-caregiver women, whereas male caregivers showed worse results in only four indicators compared with non-caregiving men. the associations between caregiving (caregiving vs. non-caregiving) and health results were stronger in women than in men, except in social health. when caregiving burden intensity was considered, greatly burdened men showed a similar or higher risk of poor hrql (physical in men: or = 3.0, ci95%: 1.4-6.3; women: or = 2.3, ci95%: 1.5-3.5; mental in men: or = 2.5, ci95%: 1.4-4.3; women: or = 2.5, ci95%: 1.7-3.7) and low social support (affective support in men: or = 2.6, ci95%: 1.5-4.6; women: or = 1.5, ci95%: 1.0-2.3). however, the risk of sedentariness, lack of sleep, greater use of health services and mental ill-health remained higher for women caregivers. conclusions: caregiving damages the health of informal caregivers but the risks for female caregivers are higher due to greater intensity of caregiver burden. as men's caregiving burden increases, gender inequalities decrease or invert.

Islas,Octavio; Arribas,Amaia;
Palabra Clave , 2010,
Abstract: the article explains what the world internet project (wip) is and why dr. jeffrey cole's initiative is so relevant. it also compares some of the results of the wip-mexico study in 2009 to the results of several major research projects on the internet in mexico. in several sections, the authors present information from some of these studies, without taking into account the results of wip-mexico, which did not focus on the same variables. the idea is to offer a broad perspective of how the internet has developed in the country.
Spain’s Commitment to Lebanon: a New Role for Spain in the Near East?
Amaia Goenaga Sánchez
Revista CIDOB d'Afers Internacionals , 2007,
Abstract: In summer 2006, Lebanon suffered the consequences of the open warfare between Israel and the Shi’ite organisation Hezbollah. Within this context, the Spanish government, together with the governments of some of its neighbouring countries, made an attempt to resolve the conflict. This commitment also became consolidated during the monthsfollowing the period of military conflict, and through three lines of action: a large-scale military contribution in the context of the UN Security Council’s Resolution 1701, the sending of economic aid to help rebuild the country and, finally, by intensifying politicalrelations with Lebanon. This shift in policy is significant if we bear in mind the previous weakness of relations between the two countries; however, we can see that this deployment of resources did not have so much to do with Lebanon itself as it did with Spain’s owninterests. In this sense, we can understand that the crisis has been turned into a platform for the practical application of the main lines that determine the socialist government’s external action.
Abstract: This text discusses different approaches to Feminist Economics according to their proposals to redefine the object of study of economics. These proposals can be understood as attempts to deconstruct key androcentric dichotomies such as the economic/non-economic and work/non-work polarities. Two main deconstruction strategies are identified, with different theoretical, empirical and political implications. The first one is aimed at recovering and revaluing the “other” in economic discourse, that is, domestic labour. The second one looks for a displacement of the binary structure through the creation of a third term or “hinge word”. The concept of sustainability of life would be the “hinge term” that allows for a revision of related concepts such as work. Finally, this article argues that a theoretical shift of attention towards sustainability of life is occurring within Feminist Economics.
Octavio Islas,Amaia Arribas
Palabra Clave , 2010,
LETRIS: Staffing service systems by means of simulation
Albert Corominas,Amaia Lusa
Journal of Industrial Engineering and Management , 2012, DOI: 10.3926/jiem.219
Abstract: Purpose: This paper introduces a procedure for solving the staffing problem in a service system (i.e., determining the number of servers for each staffing period). Design/methodology: The proposed algorithm combines the use of queueing theory to find an initial solution with the use of simulation to adjust the number of servers to meet previously specified target non-delay probabilities. The basic idea of the simulation phase of the procedure is to successively fix the number of servers from the first staffing period to the last, without backtracking. Findings: Under the assumptions that the number of servers is not upper-bounded and there are no abandonments and, therefore, no retrials, the procedure converges in a finite number of iterations, regardless of the distributions of arrivals and services, and requires a reasonable amount of computing time. Originality / value: The new procedure proposed in this paper is a systematic, robust way to find a good solution to a relevant problem in the field of service management and it is very easy to implement using no more than commonly accessible tools.
