This study aimed to evaluate the dry mass of forage and leaf blade dry mass, average daily gain, stocking rate and live weight gain in Tanzania grass (Panicum maximum Jacq.) from November/2008 to July/2009, on continuous stocking. The experimental design was a split-plot arrangement in a randomized blocks design, with three replications and four treatments: Tanzania + Campo Grande Stylo; Tanzania + 75kg/ha of N; Tanzania + 150kg/ha of N and Tanzania + 225kg/ha of N, subplots were the seasons of the year: Spring, Summer and Autumn. The forage dry mass and leaf blade dry mass was higher in Summer compared to Spring and Autumn. The treatment with 225kg of N presented higher dry mass of forage and leaf blade dry mass in Summer and Autumn. It was obtained the higher average daily gain in the Summer. In the Spring and Summer no differences were observed for average daily gain, but in the Autumn the treatment with 225kg/ha of N was the best. The stocking rate was similar in Summer and Autumn, but lower in Spring. The treatment with 225kg of N presented the higher stocking rate in Spring and Summer. The treatment with 225kg of N presented the higher live weight gain in Autumn, w

Abstract: People normally believe that Arithmetic is not complete because GÖdel launched this idea a long time ago, and it looks as if nobody has presented sound evidence on the contrary. We here intend to do that perhaps for the first time in history. We prove that what Stanford Encyclopedia has referred to as Theorem 3 cannot be true, and, therefore, if nothing else is presented in favour of GÖdel’s thesis, we actually do not have evidence on the incompleteness of Arithmetic: All available evidence seems to point at the extremely opposite direction.

This study aimed to analyze different time scales to determine the most appropriate interval in the study of ingestive behavior of confined dairy cows. The experiment was conducted at the farm Blue Water, city of Macarani-Bahia, in the period from October to November 2005. 12 crossbred Holstein cows were used, with an average body weight of 478.5 15.89kg. The treatments of this study were the intervals (five; 10; 15; 20 and 30 minutes), observed during ingestive behavior. Behavior observations occurred on the second to last day of each period of 15 days data collection for 24 hours. There has been analysis of variance and Dunnett test application, adopting 0.05 as the critical level of probability. There was no significant effect of record scales of time spent eating, ruminating, idling and efficiencies of feeding and rumination. For the variables of the numbers of periods of eating, ruminating and idle and times per period of feeding, ruminating and resting, the ranges of 10, 15, 20 and 30 minutes were different when compared with the interval of five minutes of observation. Total collection of time

The objective was to evaluate the ingestive behavior of lactating cows receiving diets with different levels of cassava bagasse (0; 5; 10 and 15%). Twelve Holstein x Zebu dairy cows with 478.5kg of average body weight and 100 to 150 days in milk, were distributed in three 4 x 4 Latin Squares. The dry matter intake, neutral detergent fiber, non fibrous carbohydrates and total digestible nutrients intake, and the ingestive behavior of the animals was evaluated, when they were submitted to four visual evaluations, with 24 hours of duration each, in five minutes scales. The evaluations were conducted on the last day of each experimental period, which had 12 days. The dry matter, non fiber carbohydrates and total digestible nutrients intakes increased linearly with cassava bagasse inclusion. The time spent with feeding, rumination and idle did not differ among treatments, as well as the number of periods and the time spent in each period in the respective activities. The behavioral aspects, only the number of chewing per ruminated bolus was affected by the diets. The feeding and rumination efficiencies only affec

The objective of this study was to assess the effect of the intervals and numbers of observations on the ingestive behavior of confined dairy heifers. We used 20 heifers Holstein x Zebu, with initial body weight of 165.5kg and mean age of 13 months. The heifers were divided into four feeding groups, composed of inclusions of cocoa meal based diets (0; 7; 14 and 21%). The treatments were the intervals (five; 10; 15; 20 and 30 minutes), number of repetitions (four, three, two and one), and turns (four, three, two and one) the observation of ingestive behavior. The evaluation came at the end of each period of 21 days of data collection for 24 hours, and activities recorded in five different intervals: 0; 10; 15; 20 and 30 minutes. Aspects of ingestive behavior were observed in four, three, two and one replicates and turns. There was no significant effect of scales of record on the time of feeding, ruminating and idle, either on the efficiencies of feeding and rumination. For variables related to rumination activity, no differences between different numbers of observations, nor for the different turns
Integrating technology with literacy: using teacher-guided collaborative online learning to encourage critical thinking
Alyson Simpson
Research in Learning Technology , 2010, DOI: 10.3402/rlt.v18i2.10757
Abstract: This paper reports on classroom-based research that was designed to monitor the integration of information and communication technology (ICT) in a teacherguided collaborative online learning context to encourage students' critical response to literary texts. The study investigates the premise that an ICT project where children read books and then use email communication to exchange responses with other learners will support critical thinking. Videos of classroom observations, journals and rap sheets were analysed for individual students' levels of critical awareness. Improvements in critical thinking were measured using linguistic analysis. Teachers and students were also interviewed for attitudes to technology use related to learning. Although there were gains in critical thinking, there was little student engagement with technology. The discussion problematises the integration of technology in the classroom through a repositioning of collaboration in a blended learning context known as book raps.
‘A text in process’: The Progressive Aspect in Gertrude Stein's The Making of Americans
Alyson Brickey
The English Languages : History, Diaspora, Culture , 2012,
Abstract: This project examines the rhetorical implications of tense and aspect in Gertrude Stein's 1925 ‘anti-novel’, the notoriously difficult and aesthetically experimental The Making of Americans: Being a History of a Family's Progress. I pay specific attention to the way in which Stein employs the progressive aspect (to be + an -ing verb form) in order to maintain a consistent focus on a dynamic present moment. This technique, I argue, functions ideologically to critique the notion of history as sequential narrative, conventionally represented through the use of teleological timelines. At the level of syntax, The Making of Americans complicates the process of tracing history through inherited norms by disrupting our ability to link moments in a causal chain, thereby developing what I suggest is a type of ‘cubist grammar’.
Toward the Formation of Realistic Galaxy Disks
Alyson Brooks
Physics , 2010,
Abstract: In this review I demonstrate that a realistic model for the formation of galaxy disks depends on a proper treatment of the gas in galaxies. Historically, cosmological simulations of disk galaxy formation have suffered from a lack of resolution and a physically motivated feedback prescription. Recent computational progress has allowed for unprecedented resolution, which in turn allows for a more realistic treatment of feedback. These advances have led to a new examination of gas accretion, evolution, and loss in the formation of galaxy disks. Here I highlight the role that gas inflows, the regulation of gas by feedback, and gas outflows play in achieving simulated disk galaxies that better match observational results as a function of redshift.
Re-Examining Astrophysical Constraints on the Dark Matter Model
Alyson Brooks
Physics , 2014, DOI: 10.1002/andp.201400068
Abstract: Recent high-resolution simulations that include Cold Dark Matter (CDM) and baryons have shown that baryonic physics can dramatically alter the dark matter structure of galaxies. These results modify our predictions for observed galaxy evolution and structure. Given these updated expectations, it is timely to re-examine observational constraints on the dark matter model. A few observations are reviewed that may indirectly trace dark matter, and may help confirm or deny possible dark matter models. Warm Dark Matter (WDM) and Self-Interacting Dark Matter (SIDM) are currently the favorite alternative models to CDM. Constraints on the WDM particle mass require it to be so heavy that WDM is nearly indistinguishable from CDM. The best observational test of SIDM is likely to be in the dark matter distribution of faint dwarf galaxies, but there is a lack of theoretical predictions for galaxy structure in SIDM that account for the role of baryons.
The minimum $b_2$ problem for right-angled Artin groups
Alyson Hildum
Mathematics , 2014,
Abstract: This paper focuses on tools for constructing 4-manifolds that have fundamental group $G$ isomorphic to a right-angled Artin group and that are also minimal, in the sense that they minimize $b_2(M)$, the dimension of $H_2(M;\mathbb{Q})$. For a finitely presented group $G$, define $h(G) = \min\{ b_2(M) | M \in \mathcal M(G) \}$. In this paper, we explore the ways in which we can bound $h(G)$ from below using group cohomology and the tools necessary to build 4-manifolds that realize these lower bounds. We give solutions for right-angled Artin groups, or RAAGs, when the graph associated to $G$ has no 4-cliques, and further we reduce this problem to the case when the graph is connected and contains only 4-cliques. We then give solutions for many infinite families of RAAGs and provide a conjecture to the solution for all RAAGs.
